This is the attitude that has probably lead to the crap schedules we keep getting every year. We aren't in a position to demand anything from a lot of teams. We went from a perennial top 75ish team to a top 150ish team. We are the epitome of average at this point, and if we can't accept that then we'll continue to see lovely D2 games on our schedule year in and year out and wonder why nobody is at the games.

Yeah, sure. For the sake of selling tickets, let's be outnumbered 3 to 1 for a "home" game at the BJCC (officiated by $EC refs) by obscenity-screaming turdnecks.

NO,

This is the attitude that was bread from the actions on the Tuscaloosa campus and the board. I was all for playing them at one time... until I learned the history, seen the actions from the trustees and some former coaches and fans.

Do I think it's good to play them, Yes
Will I pander to them, their fans, and even UAb Alabama fans.... NO

Why don't you go on their board and bring up the topic and see how they respond. My attitude is reaction from others actions.

Go Blazers and God Bless 'Murica

And another thing. THIS ATTITUDE isn't the reason we have crappy scheduling. Our history in basketball and being able to handle the big guys scares some big schools from scheduling us and being in this crappy fecalish conference are just some of the reasons.

Now excuse me while I wait for football to start

Our history in basketball is just that. If we ever want to get back to what we once were it’s going to require playing, and beating good teams. If we refuse to do the first, than it makes the second part impossible.

Thank you 9911. At least one UAB fan gets it.
We are not the program we use to be. PERIOD.
I love the we "own" them statement. One single victory against them a quarter of a century ago does not constitute owning someone. And as far as being "outnumbered " at the BJCC that happens when one program is in the top 10 and the other is 200+.
If UAB were to ever be the superior program again our fans would show in force and theirs would sit at home. I've been a Blazer fan since going to first games in 78. We also need to keep our mouths shut about who has the most ignorant fan base. That's the one title we compete for every year.

We're mediocre because we are in a crappy sports conference and we aren't ever on TV. We don't get the big influx of money that a conference shares or dishes out with a TV contract.

Hell even WABMD shows bigeast or AAC games or whatever in Bham market.

Only football will bring up basketball and the other sports at this point.

the ship has sailed on other routes.

(just my humble opinion.)

Correct. Basketball has suffered as a result of teams leaving the conference. If we were still playing Louisville, etc. everyone would be happy and not complaining.

Truth is, there is very little that we could have done to change this.

From this point though, football would be our ticket out as an athletics program.

Support your existing hoops coach and program.

Dude are you serious?
"Require playing and beating good teams".
Just because people said they dont care if we play ua doesnt mean we said we don't want to play anyone else. Where did you read anyone saying "we can dont have to play anyone". Most said "we dont have to play UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA. There are 300+ other schools to play."

If you want UAB to playUA, just say it. But dont try and wrap what people said. We've played many major schools in these preseason tournaments and invites, but keep coming up short. If the men could actually make a good run it would help with RPI and the eye test.

It’s the same logic. If they won’t give us the deal we want then screw them would apply across the board would it not? Or is it only applicable to Alabama/Auburn? I don’t care if we play either or not. I enjoyed the series with Auburn but if we can get another with a comparable opponent that works for me.

If I misunderstood, my apologies. This is about any solid opponent, not just in state schools to me.

No problem. Misunderstandings happen over the internet. It usually takes three or 100 post till it sorts itself out. We've all done it, myself included.

My response is based on the thread title. If we play ua, fine and dandy. But I feel we shouldn't jump through hoops, nore should any instate school jump through hoops, just to play them.

RE: Oats (new UAT coach) willing to play instate schools around the state
IMHO in order to understand the trajectory of the UAB BB program, look at its coaching history. To begin the program, we hired a successful BBHC from UCLA (who had been a successful BBHC at 2 or 3 prior schools). Since then UAB has hired a succession of assistant coaches (Davis was practically an interim BBHC briefly at Indiana) with varying degrees of success. The two most successful of these were later hired away by P5 programs.

When you hire assistant coaches to their first BBHC job, it is always a matter of good or bad fortune in your result, made worse by a program's financial constraints. UAB has hired on the basis of who it can afford, not who it would probably prefer.

Past acrimony between the UA System administration and UAB athletics probably precludes any contests between their men's revenue programs, but that is something unique to our state's way of fiefdom mentality rather than common in other states. I don't know of any other state's university administration that has tried to abolish another state university's FB program.

Ugghhh, I can’t believe I’m breaking my rule and getting involved here. Davis coaches Indiana from 2000-2006, including an appearance in the NCAA Championship game.
When you say he “was practically an interim BBHC briefly”—that’s where I quit reading, thanks to a lack of credibility

I mostly ignore him. But as a charitable service, I occasionally try to help him gain insight into why people ignore him.

I don't remember Davis being the BBHC at IU from 2000-2006 as you state. If so, I am in error about his tenure status there. I thought he had only been BBHC there for a couple of seasons or so having been an assistant before that.. I recall more than a few IU fans claiming Davis got to the Final 4 because of the General's recruits.

Yes, it is. That said, there is a thread on the board about UAB getting $17 million in new money paid to the athletic department.

That payout is due to football's success. I don't think there can be much serious debate about the truth of that. Some of that money will be going to modernize Bell Gymnasium. Our success in football is also going to help to lift all of the other programs.

So, yeah, basketball thread... but that $17m didn't appear as a result of our basketball program.
