FILM STUDY: HOW LUKE FICKELL AND MARCUS FREEMAN BUILT THE TOP-10 DEFENSE
There wasn't enough room for the full title:

FILM STUDY: HOW LUKE FICKELL AND MARCUS FREEMAN BUILT THE TOP-10 DEFENSE THEY'LL BRING TO OHIO STADIUM THIS FALL

So yes, it's from an OSU site. And there are maybe a couple of points to quibble with, but it's probably the best breakdown of UC's defensive strategy under Freeman/Fickell that you'll see anywhere.

Thanks for sharing this analysis. Pretty thorough and on target with just a sentence or two of condescension in the story. Of course then it's fun to read the comments section where a few of the ignorant take the opportunity to enlighten us about the innate superiority of the team from Cowtown. I did love the comments about the great turnout of UC fans at the horseshoe though.

This may be the season to turn some heads.

I do think it's funny that they do all of this research and film study, but still think Scott Frost coached UCF last year 03-lmfao

I agree about the Frost thing - that's a dumb mistake. All of the other stuff is expected - it's an OSU analyst writing for OSU ("P"5) fans.

Sounds like flattery but it's a typical O$U set up.

If they lose, they'll say "well look, we told you they were good." If they plow through us they'll give it the usual "even Cincinnati's best defensive team ever isn't close to our level."

Most O$U fans can't name all the teams in the B1G and don't even know they have a basketball team.

Interesting attempt with some decent insight. Of course frost wasn't just not at UCF last year he was in their conference and nearly beat OSU. Quite the oversight.

I would be hard pressed to find an OSU fan who could not name all the Big 10 schools. While their Basketball team is not as popular it still has a lot of support.

Apparently someone writes about OSU couldn't even tell you who coached Nebraska last season.

The OSU fans I know not only know all the schools in their conference, they all say they wish the Big 10 would add UC. They wanted nothing to do with Rutgers in the last go round...

I lived all over the state at various points in my life. The Cincinnati-based OSU fans would never say that, but the ones in the other corners are fairly rational about it. My experience is the non-Cincinnati based OSU fans are very proud of the state of Ohio and want to see all the teams do well. And yes... they hate the fact they are now associated with Rutgers.

Most OSU fans I know, have no idea who is in the "Bottom" half of the B1G. They mostly just like the fact that the team is only going to have a 1 or 2 in the L column. That's the most important thing.

Yep...I'd say in Toledo/NW Ohio most OSU fans I've talked about UC with are complimentary but mostly can be described as having a measured indifference towards us, outside of one day a year obviously.

I don't think this thought exists in their mind.

I'm friends with several Illinois & Purdue fans. They really hated the move East. They wish the Big 10 had added Missouri/Kansas rather than Maryland/Rutgers.

About 2012 or 2013 I asked one of them what he thought of UC. He said that UC's sports teams were good enough to merit an invite, but we were nowhere near good enough academically to be considered. So I asked what he thought of adding Nebraska, and he said UC was better academically but that Nebraska's football team was too good to say no to.

RE: FILM STUDY: HOW LUKE FICKELL AND MARCUS FREEMAN BUILT THE TOP-10 DEFENSE
It's definitely impressive what this staff has done in just two years. That's why I'm high on their chances this season to really make a run at the conference chip. It's not just about schemes and match-ups but having the players that fit your system and having enough talent to give you quality depth. Year 3 should prove no drop-off in production on defense because the same system and coaches are in place along side player experience/familiarity and talent. We've come a long way since Carter Jacobs was at the safety position and a different coordinator on dee occurred every year. Think Wiggins is a major upgrade?

Fan perceptions from the P5 schools are always interesting to hear. Even UC's short stay in a BCS 6 conference that yielded a pair of football championships and a Sugar and Orange Bowl made a statement that Cincinnati could compete in a "power" conference. At the same time UC was ramping up admission standards and student retention. Those measures, paired with high research funding and a large endowment, put UC solidly in the P5 pack when movement occurs. In fact, on the academic side, it puts UC above Louisville and West Virginia, so a move to the ACC or B12 is most liklely when realignment kicks in again.

The B10 has been steadfast so far in their AAU membership requirement, although Nebraska's ouster from that club after gaining admission to the conference smelled bad. Still, the B10, with the exception of Northwestern, remains the most cohesive (and stable) conference because of the homogeneous profile of member schools.

Good assessment of the profile of the Big Ten schools. But UC fits in very well with that same profile. That said, O$U will always serve as an obstacle to any consideration of UC into the Big Ten. Look for Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas or Colorado (and of course Notre Dame) to be the likeliest candidates for Big Ten expansion if it were to come up again.

Isn't the biggest issue UC doesn't increase the TV $$$?

Zero chance of Cincinnati being in the Big Ten anytime in the near or even distant future really. The ACC is our best hope (and preferred landing spot for most).
