Looks like Clemson is trying to keep up with Alabama in skirting the limit on the number of assistant coaches. 07-coffee3

1. Terry is the smart one, so I'm fine with Clemson hiring him as long as Tommy stays away.
2. Terry is a 63-year old grad assistant... seriously? What's he studying?

Thanks. So as weird as this sounds, it's totally legit and not a workaround at all.

I'm almost willing to bet that he ends up working with either Asst AD of Football Administration Woodey McCorvey, Dir of Football Player Development Brad Scott or Dir of Football Operations Mike Dooley. With the degree he's after and his age I would imagine he's looking to score an AD job somewhere.

Graduate assistants don't count against the NCAA limit on the number of football assistant coaches.

But they have a long, long way to go before they get to the point of Saban's army of coaches who are working as "consultants" or "analysts" on Alabama's staff that don't count against the assistant coach limit.

That's just it... Bowden is actually enrolled as a grad student.

FBS teams are limited to four graduate assistants in football so while they do not count towards the 10 assistant coaching positions there are limits.

There are no limits on analysts or consultants.

The NCAA limits the "hands on" coaching to the head coach, the ten assistant coaches, and the four graduate assistant coaches, and they limit the off campus recruiting to the head coach and assistant coaches.

RE: Bowden to Clemson
No, Bowden is not a traditional grad student. He's getting this opportunity because of his experience. But...so what? He probably could have done this at a lot of places but chose Clemson. There are probably other coaches who will look to take this path in the future.

Alabama's army of consultants provide opportunities for guys to hone their craft and/or get back into the game after a setback in their career. Working for Saban is a plus on your resume.

Both avenues are available to any and every school. In other words, if it's within the rules then who cares?

I scratched my head when I saw that. He's 63 years old. Does he think he can get another head coaching job? I would think he would want to go back to TV or just relax.

I know there is a long history with Clemson, the Bowden family, and their former assistants from both FSU and Clemson.

In this position, he can coach on the field, but doesn't have to recruit. He shouldn't need the money. But, he has to go back to school.

Good luck to him.

That makes sense. Master's may give him a big + on doing that.

If they wanted, they could hire him as an analyst. Major Applewhite got signed to do that at Alabama. Those positions are unlimited.

I bet he and Tommy could get a gig on the upcoming ACC network.
