Travel would be less and the conference is extremely stable but other than that I would just stay in the ASUN.

Fair enough.

I'm just wondering how we can most realistically improve our situation, as being in a conference that regularly adds D2's can only hurt our perception with the rest of D1, as the bottom of the conference just seems to drop further. That's why when I saw this conference, it looked like a good possibility.

Putting the emphasis in-house for a moment, the best thing LU could do immediately is build up and strengthen existing programs, to continue to make the school attractive. Continue the upward trajectory of basketball, and baseball and women's BB and softball. If it's the A-Sun, SoCo, BSC, CAA there's little perception and difference between them. They are all considered lower tier.

LU made a splash in the NCAA tourney last year winning their first game. A good accomplishment. Expectations should be higher this year, and maybe an even higher seed with good fortune. If FB can continue to improve and one of two other sports do the same, then LU becomes more attractive when the next round of conference shifts, drop outs, drop ins occur.

Attendance at basketball and baseball needs to increase significantly. Watching baseball games this year, and I know the weather was cold, had many games with camera shots of near empty stands. All these things create a perception. Shifting from one lower tier conference to another is marginally an improvement at best. Perception of a winning program, with strong student and attendance support, should be LU's goal. And that is purely an internal journey independent of any conference affiliation.

Based on where our programs stand right now, can you imagine coming off a bowl victory, advancing in the men’s NCAA tourny, making the NCAA women’s tourny, making a super regional in baseball and softball. We’re not that far off. Golly, just a few years it seemed like a dream.

I think we are good where we are. If something better pops up we should take it otherwise let’s just stay.

On an unrelated topic that still has to do with Liberty future:

What would y'all think about closing the football stadium with a dome? With weather being what it is here in the middle of the mountains, there is always a potential risk of losing major games to weather, & since most opponents have a conference schedule, it would be difficult to reschedule those games, leaving us with less opportunities to reach the minimum bowl threshold.

I think you could incorporate much of the structure that already exists, & this also leaves room to add more seating as (hopefully) we continue to grow in attendance.

Let me know your thoughts!

Very interesting outlook for the program's future. Some people would not like this idea but what if the dome was made out of alumina glass? We could still have a clear view of the beautiful background of the mountains, tower and skies! Okay, it will cost an arm and a leg for the roof plus heating and ventilation(around 20-35 million give or take), but it would be a good investment in the long run with future schedules and recruiting. I also thought of the same idea for Vines. I mentioned this idea in the ASOR forum a year or so ago and JLFJR responded on it.

I think it would be a mistake to build the football stadium into a dome. I don't know how you could add one to the current stadium without severely limiting future expansion. Even if it was possible, I don't see the purpose. The type of weather that has cancelled games, like a hurricane, would cancel a game played in a dome.

How many schools play in a dome that isn't also an NFL stadium? I can think of Syracuse but that's it.

I’m assuming you’re asking about the FBS? The FCS has Idaho, South Dakota, NDSU, Idaho St, UNI just to name a few. I hate the idea of a dome.

UTSA plays in the Alamodome. Idaho plays in a dome but they recently moved from FBS to FCS.

To be fair, when I speak about weather cancelling a game, I'm not speaking about a hurricane, because clearly a game would not happen regardless. What I am talking about is when we have those really stormy days that bring lots of lightning. We all remember the UNT game last year that was stopped & significantly delayed due to weather, & that was an earlier game. Most of our games this year, & probably for the future, are 6:00PM games. Those get delayed much, & they'll be cancelled.

I don't love a dome, so I'm not throwing this out there because I love it. I'm throwing it out there because we might need to consider how to ensure we don't lose games in the future, because being here in Lynchburg, we are in a position to have that be regular risk at least once or more per season.

How many games have actually been canceled at Liberty? Not delayed.

Love the idea of a dome. BUT we would have future dome problems when it gets old. Plus that limits us to build.

Watching the Tulane vs. Houston game, the AAC is the only G5 conference I’d want Liberty to join. Good schools, good football, lots of exposure. I used to think about C-USA, but not so much anymore. As long as we can keep playing ODU I’m good.

Temple
ECU
Cincy
USF
UCF
Liberty

Memphis
Navy
Houston
SMU
Tulsa

We can all vision, dream and hope that LU can step up and become a part of a conference with notable schools. What really needs to happen right now is for us to expand our academia and fund research heavily. That’s what make us part of the big boys with the help of winning season for most sports (most importantly football, basketball, baseball, softball).

Instead of a dome, why not put awnings over both upper decks kindof like they have on the one side of Heinz Field in Pittsburgh? That knocks out a lot of rain without ruining the view.

Also, if LU ever decides to put seats in the berm area, those seats should be retractible. In other words, pull them out for when LU has the home game against VA Tech, but leave them closed for the non p5 home opponents.

RE: Realignment/Possible Liberty Future
Great recent article: Liberty AD Ian McCaw says Liberty has Power 5 potential.
https://www.aseaofred.com/liberty-ad-ian...potential/

So many good quotes from this article.
“If something in the American Athletic Conference, for example, were to open up, that would be something we would need to carefully evaluate, but Liberty is thriving right now. We just want to continue to grow, and we feel we can do that very well as an FBS Independent and an ASUN member.” IM

“The last 3 years have been amazing,” said McCaw. “We opened about $150M worth of new athletic facilities in such a short period of time. I’m not sure there’s a school in the country that’s done more construction than we have in this recent window. And, of course, we’re not finished yet.”

The article also talks about the new tennis courts, phase 3 of Williams Stadium, the indoor football practice facility, considerations to building an indoor softball facility, and possible golf upgrades.

Bright future!

None play in domes that are also NFL stadiums now that Tulane, Minnesota, and Georgia State have their own stadiums.
