Can we play a team more than once in a year?

Yes.

New Mexico State and Liberty are doing just that in 2019.

I mean, I know we HAVE in the distant past. I also know rules change, and most times I am not made aware of the changes.

ETA: See your post above now.

RE: Arky State. We should play them every year.
I caught a portion of an interview with the Ark. St. AD today. Some of it applies here. When talking about the importance of AD relationships and open/changing jobs, Tom Bowen was brought up. He said the reason the Ark. St/Memphis series got done was b/c of he and Tom and their developed friendship. (Think Tom must of been chummy with half the SBC looking at future schedules). In an earlier interview (the day the AR/UM game was announced) the Ark. St. AD said new AAC tv payouts make it easier/open up scheduling possibilities. Bodybag games aren't needed for survival and you can be more strategic (2 for 1). Let's see, he also said today that big payday games are getting harder to come by, but are necessary for financial reasons and the chance that you may win one...like winning the lottery, can't win if you don't play. Think that was all that applies here. He's a good AD. Hopefully, Memphis gets a good one as well.

It gets more bizarre than that.

UNC and Wake Forest have an upcoming OOC home-and-home.

Plus I know several of their fans (some secondary to the Tigers) and they would rather come to Memphis and maybe go to casino, visit family or enjoy so many things we have that Jonesboro doesn’t. It’s a nice city but most of our fans don’t spend the night there.

Exactly what leverage would you have on Arkansas State...come on man...We have turned down SEC and Big 10 2 for 1's...it's not feasible for us financially or contractually with premium seating...and would hurt the long term health of our program (fan base). Man, we wouldn't do a 2 for 1 with Arkansas.

The leverage we have is it’s a no win situation for us. We gain nothing by winning and lose a great deal by losing. It’s what the SEC schools use on playing us.

No, that's not the leverage on them. The leverage is 2-fold.
1) we produce record crowds in their stadium, so their home gate for their home game portion of the contract is better than any other game they will have, save for their conference championship game, and AR- Pine Bluff for some strange reason.
2) I don't care who else they are comparing us to when considering 2-1s or 3-2s, NOBODY has a closer away game travel destination for them than Memphis, and in some fans' cases, they actually live closer to us than them.

Sorry but an extra 3,000 to 5,000 fans at one of our home games doesn't give you any leverage...be real here...as stated before...the dollar is king...and a 2 for 1 doesn't bring us much... lets say you brought 10,000 fans with you...and you don't...we'd have to sell those tickets at $160 to $180 a piece to make up for what the big boys like Michigan are paying us to visit...and that's what we would lose playing a 2 for 1...are you coming to J-town buying $160 tickets...no you are not...now if you want to guarantee us 10,000 fans willing to pay us $160 per ticket in the upper deck...then you have some leverage. I'm not trying to be confrontational here, I'm just stating the financial facts here.

Naw, it's cool. I hear ya. And like it's been said before here, this is all academic at this point, because we have a 2/2 that's gonna take us all the way to at least 2025.

But I will just point out that, yes we do bring 10,000, or pretty close to it. And B), you are acting like the choice is either us or a Michigan body-bag game. You have FOUR OOC slots to fill. You can do both and still have 2 choices left over.

Let's see.... quick glance... last year you played:
SEMS @ home
Something called Nevada-Las Vegas (is that just Nevada? I've heard of THEM) @ home
@ Alabama
@ Tulsa

Tulsa was you closest @ game. How many stAte fans went to that one... 5hr 40min drive time on that one. Hotel? Yep. That must be an EXCRUCIATING drive...

All I'm sayin' is, Memphis could be your away game 2 out of 3 years... Look how close we are! Look how convenient that would be for y'all!!!

Wait! Am I seeing this right? Did y'all have a rematch in your bowl game last year? Is that the same Nevada you played in the 4th game of the season? or does the MWC have a Nevada and a Nevada-Las Vegas?

UNLV.

And yes, Nevada (Reno) and UNLV are two separate things entirely and both have been FBS forever.

Ahhh..... UNLV. I know them as that, not Nevada-Las Vegas. Looks strange in print on a website. Sorta like seeing Mississippi instead of Ole Miss.

This conversation seems to come up once every year or two... same answer from me: no thanks. Been there, done it. We may have to do some 2 for 1's, but if that's the current landscape, and we can make a little bank along the way, let's add bigger programs. Don't like it, I want 7 home games every year, but it's the reality if we want to strengthen our schedule.

What do you want? an FCS warm-up and then 3 P5s? That's not gonna happen. We are gonna have to schedule at least one Sunbelt type team every year. 2 P5s should be plenty, given our strong conference schedule.

I'm good with that, but when was the last time we played 2 P5s in the same season?

What?

Arkansas State isn't FCS...they are FBS...kinda sounded in a few posts here that some folks sound as if they think ASU is FCS...maybe I'm just reading it wrong.
