PAC-12 just needs USC to get back to its old self or at least back to being a top 10 program. That's the problem out west right now.

(06-09-2019 02:32 PM)Statefan Wrote:  To be more blunt - what happens when all the middle and upper middle class white kids play lacrosse? Who is left to support the local middle and high school with that funding element now attached to another sport, not to mention girls sport? When urban areas can;t find enough kids to play and rural areas can;t find enough kids to field a team will it become like Orange County NC, home of UNC, where high school football had to be dropped due to lack of players? Trump has already politicized football, what happens when Dems and Libs can no longer watch without being called hypocrites?

As the players more and more represent the less affluent segments of society those same lefties that used to enjoy football will be bashed over it even more.

Trends in the United States start on the West Coast. Back here in the colonies we remain rooted in our ways.

Carolina didn't just cut 13,000 seats out of Kenan Stadium for the hell of it. It's lack of interest and quite a bit of it is gendered lack of interest (what happens when you allow too many girls into your college).

If this was 1980, given the success of Clemson's program, they would be adding 20K seats to go to 100K, even NC State would be adding 12K to go to 70K.

The demographic time bomb regarding football will hit the west coast first, then the upper mid west, then the northeast.

The reality of football in California is that the schools are losing football players. In 2007, there were 107,916 boys participating in football in California. That number has fallen to 97,079 in 2017. Since 2007, boy's soccer has increased from 44,730 to 52,795 in 2017. Lacrosse has increased from 5,323 to 9,569 during this ten year period.

I played golf with a neighbor yesterday who is a principal at an LA Unified high school. He was telling me that they can barely field a varsity football team and that they discontinued the JV team. He says it is due primarily to parental concern over safety. The schools have taken every precaution possible to make the game safer, but many parents are still concerned.

What he does not see is the talent level dropping at the high school level. It is not the star talent that is dropping out, it is the average talent that is dropping out of football. Parents that think their kid could get a scholarship playing football will let their kids play. I attended a couple of high school football playoffs games last fall and the stadiums were packed and their was plenty of talent on the field.

Interest in football is not dying in California. The kids that love to play football and have the talent and size to play, they will end up on the football field. Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold came from beach communities in Southern California. Josh Allen grew up on a farm in Central California. Kolton Miller came from a suburb of Sacramento. Four "white kids" from California chosen in the first 15 picks of the 2018 NFL draft. They could have decided to play lacrosse, but they all had a love for football. That is not going to change anytime soon.

RE: What happens to the P12 if they can't recruit?
I know this thread is about football, but has anyone seen ESPN's basketball top 100 recruits heading in to 2020?

http://www.espn.com/college-sports/baske...order/true

Not one top 100 recruit has committed to a Pac-12 team This far. This in a year where the West has several high ranked recruits available to sign.

It's a little early. Only one kid in the ESPN top 34 has committed to this point. It is June of 2019. Check back in another six months.

Invite Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and call it a day.

PAC-16 West: Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, California, Stanford, UCLA, USC
PAC-16 East: Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Colorado, Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State

Even better schedule would be 3-2-2-2 format, with four regional scheduling divisions, once CCG deregulation is approved. That way, you can guarantee every school in the conference plays in California annually and in both SoCal and Texas twice in four years. And, you play everyone in the conference at least twice in four years. That would be fantastic for recruiting and TV scheduling.

However, I'm sure the PAC would fight for Kansas, or even TCU or Houston, ahead of Oklahoma State.

I would expect the Pac-12 presidents to want Texas, Kansas and Iowa State... I think they'd accept Oklahoma.

Leisure Suit Larry would recommend inviting Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State - but I'm not sure his word carries as much weight as it once did.

Exactly what I think should and would happen if there weren’t so many barriers in front of it. Would clear up the future of CFB realignment immensely.

The SEC and B1G can then try their darnedest to take 2 teams each from the ACC or from the KU/KSU/ISU/BU/TCU pile to get to 16 or whatever they want.

If they fail then great, if they succeed then fine. Either way the ACC would then have teams that’d fit the likely remaining schools mold fine to get back to 14 or 16 like West Virginia, UConn, Temple, Cincy. ND will never join a conference.

Whoever is left can use the perfectly general Big 12 name and Texas HQ as the umbrella for a coast to coast best of the rest conference to attempt to score biggest TV deal possible.

It won’t happen this way but it should.

I'm not saying UH will ever make it to the PAC, but Baylor is super never going to the PAC - and not for religious reasons.

RE: What happens to the P12 if they can't recruit?
Football is slowly dying on the West Coast and Northeast. Wealthy white kids whose parents vote for Democrats are increasingly pursuing lacrosse or soccer or not participating in athletics all together. In 30 years I can see it being a sport that only holds popularity in the South and Midwest.

The PAC 12 is going to be hit the hardest by this. West Coasters' interest in football is waning, meaning they are earning less in revenue. Less revenue makes them even less competitive with better funded programs in other parts of the country. All the while the quality and quantity of available recruits in their background is declining.

Looking at the 2017 attendance records only 3 of the top 30 were in 2016 blue states:

18 USC
21 Washington
24 VT

There was a time I thought the B12 would be wise to add two California schools even if they were not P12 schools for recruiting and TV purposes. After reading the comments with this post and considering the cultural change in the state, maybe they should just try to schedule a homecoming for Utah & Colorada

The pac 12 should invite Texas tech and Houston to jump to 14. Than offer Texas spot 15

RE: What happens to the P12 if they can't recruit?
Reasons why PAC 12 teams best bet is too just stick together and compete with each other for championships. Leaving that league would put them in a immediate disadvantage elsewhere.

Not all that dissimilar from us or Syracuse being in the Big 10. We’d have no shot of ever contending for a league title.

I live between those 2 schools. No way either will (re)join the flat landers.
