Davld Teal on 2020-2025 ACC bowl tie-ins.
Note - Not an official ACC announcement but one of the oldest ACC insider around. Some surprising twists from McMurphy original twists.

Teel's bowl article (using 2014 current lineup. Teel did not know of the tiers will be used or go different)

1. Orange vs SEC/B10/ND
1A Outback (replaces Citrus NYD) if B10 is in Orange as a Non Semi-Finalist.
2. Camping World (Orlando Mid week) vs B12

Tier 1 (3-7
Gator vs SEC
Belk vs SEC/B10
PinStripe vs B10
Sun vs PAc 12
Holiday vs Pac 12 (Assuming Mid Tier

Lower Tier
7. Military vs AAC
8. Gasparilla vs SEC (replacing Independent)
9. Boston vs AAC (replacing Detroit)

10 and 11 appear to be Birmingham and Dallas. His wording really is not clear "The First Responders Bowl in Dallas (vs. a Group of Five conference) and Birmingham (Ala.) Bowl (vs. the SEC) also will remain affiliated with the ACC, if needed." My assumption back fills

It seems like the bowls got down to the last musical chair and the Pac-12 didn't want to sit in it... so it's still unofficial until everything is finally resolved.

FWIW, I much prefer Gasparilla + Fenway over Independence + Detroit

You mean the Independence Bowl?

Wouldn't be the first time Tennis Larry ok'd something and then the ADs or presidents said, "WTF? Are you serious, Larry?"

The power conferences often prefer that their bottom bowls be drivable and in the conference footprint. Thats where G5 vs P5 bowls serve a purpose. They are playing a G5 that is conveniently located in the P5's footprint or the G5 is willing to travel to where ever the P5 footprint is located. Either way---the P5 gets a convenient easy in footprint game that is cheap and easy for the fans to get to. The Big10---with its northern climate thats not great for bowls was an exception (going to Dallas to play a G5)--but that game has been replaced in their lineup.

I say all that to point out that Shreveport is not a great destination---and its really quite far out of the Pac12 footprint. The Pac12 may have been willing to go there for a P5 vs P5 game----but I dont see the Indy Bowl being a landing spot for the #8 Pac12 team when the opponent is a G5 team. There are numerous P5 vs G5 bowls that are closer to (or inside of) the Pac12 footprint and are situated in more interesting destinations if the Pac12 #8 is going to play a G5 team. I'd think one of the Dallas bowls would be a good fit---or one of the many MW bowls in the west. If they just dont want another MW Bowl, I suspect the AAC would be more than happy to travel to a Pac12 footprint venue.

For the record, if I thought Shreveport wasn't worth the trip for ACC teams then it sure isn't for Pac-12 teams. Honestly, when the Independence Bowl lost its SEC tie-in, that may be all she wrote.

It is a bit embarrassing that the bowls couldn't be finalized by now. Has the Pac-12 released an official bowl list yet for the next cycle? The ACC hasn't, and I suspect this one bowl was the sticking point for both leagues.

No, the Pac-12 hasn't released an official list.

But I did read that the bowl certification committee is requiring that each bowl have two tie-ins, e.g., they can't roll as "ACC vs. at-large", so you're right, that must be the holdup. If the Pac-12 is not signing off here, then maybe
(1) they'll give in eventually; or
(2) they'll swap into another bowl that makes more sense for the Pac-12 (e.g., Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth); or
(3) the Pac will just not take the Independence tie. McMurphy reported that the SEC has an 11th tie available that they declined to use, so it's possible the SEC will take that tie, just so the Independence can get certified. Or, a G5 conference that hasn't used all its ties could take it, as long as that doesn't lead to the ACC backing out of the bowl.

Any SEC tie would be in name only. They hardly ever filled the Indy when it was the 10th bowl in the line up. As the 11th bowl, it would never get filled. That said, I think the Indy Bowl would still opt for that "name" tie to help hang on to their "Wlak On's" sponsor (who will be entering an option year after this season).

Teel's bowl article (using 2014 current lineup. Teel did not know of the tiers will be used or go different)

I think your numbering is wrong... Should be

1. Orange (ESPN)
1a. Outback when Big Ten gets Orange slot. (ABC/ESPN) (2 times out of 6 years)

Top Tier
2. Camping World vs B12 (ESPN)

Mid Tier (3-7)
3. Holiday vs P12 (FOX)
4. Gator vs SEC (ESPN)
5. Belk vs SEC/B10 (ESPN)
6. PinStripe vs B10 (ESPN)
7. Sun vs P12 (CBS)

Lower Tier (8-10)
8. Military vs AAC (ESPN)
9. Boston vs AAC (ESPN)
10. Gasparilla vs. SEC (ESPN)

Conditional tie-ins
Birmingham vs. SEC/G-5 (ESPN)
First Responder vs G-5 (ESPN)

So 11 could be Indy, and the ACC may have pulled out if the Indy was not going to raise the payout??? Will be interesting to see what/when the PAC-12 & ACC announce details..

SMH @ the idea that the Camping World is a "top tier" bowl.

I could see a move to three tier system. IE:

1. Orange
1A. Outback

Note Tiers are alphabetically ordered.

Tier 1 (8+ Wins)
Belk vs SEC/B10
Camping World vs B12
Gator vs SEC
Holiday vs P12 (FOX)

Tier 2 (7+ Wins)
PinStripe vs B10
Sun vs P12 (CBS)

Tier 3 (Remaining Teams)
Boston vs AAC
Gasparilla vs SEC
Military vs AAC

11th Slot either First Responder vs B12 or ACC Primary Tie-in when B12 is not playing and Primary backup if B12 does not fill slot.

Conditional Tie-in Bham if SEC or AAC does not fill the slot.

As always noted, nothing is official until ACC and P12 officially announce,

This would be the more accurate tier system:

1. Orange Bowl

Top Tier
The part-time deal with the Outback

Then you get into the various second rate bowls the ACC has, complete with the four cold weather games: Belk, Pinstripe, Boston, and Sun.
