I plan to retire and become a Virginia resident soon, so I figured I should get to know my neighbors...
A little late I realize, but still...welcome to God's Country. Virginia is a wonderful place.
Thanks, my wife and I enjoy the area.
We are right on the North Carolina line, fifteen miles from West Jefferson, NC and fifteen miles from Independence, Va.
A strategic retirement move that enables you many a weekend trip to watch Notre Dame road games!
Correct!

Sounds like Mouth of Wilson, or Grassy Creek. Have you met any of the Hudlers - I guess they still are in the tree business unless they have been bought out like everyone else. I don't get there much anymore.
Pond Mountain and Whitetop were my favorite spots.
Bingo. Our address is Mouth of Wilson, but we are off Grassy Creek.
Haven't met the Hudler's yet, but we are surrounded by Christmas tree farms.
Some of the local farmers are now switching to grow hemp, much better profit per acre.
I was just hiking the Appalachian Trial at the top of Whitetop mountain.

You know much about Clarksville (Kerr Lake)? Heading there July 12th to visit a friend
Get your shots in advance - rabies, hep, and tetnus. Carry a snake bite kit.
PS you can;t whip the bottom catfish by yourself unless you are a hell of a man.
PSS my dad is from that area and when I was about 25 he was showing me how to noodle. It was hot and boring. Very late in the day the entire noodle disapeard to the bottom where I could not see. Dad instinctiley produced his big knife and said "stand back boy".
Next thing I knew the damn ugliest, biggest freshwater catfish I had ever seen was up and almost in the boat - having seen a saltwater channel bass of 58 lbs this ugly was at least 45 pounds. I got two hands on him and have only been beat like that by a female NC State Basketball player and a Mule.
As far as I know, he still lurks, waiting for Dad to catch him but with a more reliable mate to help get him in. He had a head big enough to swallow canteloupe.
Lol, great info and a lot of fun to read your post. Thanks, Statefan!

Half are fake? That's a nice way of putting it.
I recall when GT entered the ACC, the old (FUN!) UVa Pep Band was playing on Grant Field in the early 80's. At halftime during UVA's first trip to Atlanta with GT as a member of the ACC the UVA pep band announcer did the following...(true story by the way)
"The University of Virginia Pep Band would like to welcome Georgia Tech to the ACC by paying tribute to the University of Georgia...GIMME A D!" (Tech fans looked perplexed as this was unexpected)...UVA Pep Band forms a D on the field
Announcer continues...
"GIMME A U" (Tech fans start giggling as they can feel where this is headed)...UVA Pep Band forms a U on the field beside the D
Announcer finishes...
"GIMME AN M" (major cheer across the stadium as they got it now)...UVA Pep Band plays Glory Glory to Ol' Georgia as they walk off the field with a D-U-M in formation
Those were fun times. Can't do that stuff anymore apparently. DUM Dwags.
