It was a faculty senate proposal rather than an actual investigation, so that tells me they weren't all that serious about it.

None, but a good number of D2s.

Faculty senates as a whole take a pretty dim view of athletics (or at least scholarship athletics). The part of their proposal about taking any savings from moving down and reallocating them to academics (or however it was phrased) laid bare their intent, and also their lack of understanding about how lower-level athletics work (D2 schools are still giving scholarships but with far less community interest, and D3s aren't viable in Florida). I think they had this image that by not playing that dumb ol' sportsball, or by doing so on a smaller scale, they'd save millions of dollars that would immediately go to their pet projects, but it's not that linear.

Stetson could be in the ACC in 45 years. They just need a facilities upgrade, fan upgrade, and a big donor like Bill Gates or Warren Buffet. If Stetson goes to the ACC, I called it!

That is what you get with Ivy League grads running things at these schools that would like to drop football instead of getting schools attract students. All the California public schools that dropped football had faculty, ADs and some board members from Ivy schools who do not like college football or giving scholarships to students for football, or we would still have Big West and D2 conferences still with football.

I used to live in Deltona, Fl., and Stetson did not seem to be D1, at least in football. I have not been there in years, but it seems that has not changed.

I live very close to their law school which is on the other side of Florida. Stetson is no different than 150-200 other schools in the lower fringe of D-1. They love cashing the BB welfare check and hope "They can catch lightning in the bottle" like Gonzaga, Butler, FGCU, Murray St, Lipscomb, etc...and create a hoops program that makes some money.

In an extreme case it can change their Fortune's completely and they can get a ticket permanently out of the Fringe (Zags, Butler)

Well, Stetson is trying. They hired Donnie Jones, so he should easily get them to the top of the pack in the A-Sun. It's a nice campus for a small liberal arts school, but there's not much to sell recruits on. Other than their baseball stadium, all the facilities and the overall atmosphere scream D2 or D3. Still, Donnie is a proven recruiter in Florida, so he's got a chance.
