NCAA Track and Field Championships - Charlie Card-Childers / Michelle Fokam
Today, the Decathlon begins at noon for Charlie Card-Childers and 23 others. Charlie is seeded 12th.

The women's triple jump ( Michelle Fokam ) takes place on Saturday afternoon, the final day of competition.

With the exception of the multis (Decathlon and Heptathlon), men and women compete on alternate days - men today and Friday, women on Thursday/Saturday.

RE: NCAA Track and Field Championships
After 2 events (100 meters and long jump), Charlie is in 21st place (out of 23, since one has dropped already). The shot put is next, followed by his second best event (high jump).

After the shot put (3rd event), he's still 21st overall ... and 152 points ahead of his CUSA championship pace (6,516, with a pole vault no-height) ... and 51 points behind his personal-best pace (7,529 in March at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays).

Charlie has cleared 1.98 meters (6' 6"). He's now 9 points out of 16th, 13 out of 15th and 25 out of 14th. The three immediately ahead of him are out of the high jump.

He did not clear 2.01 meters (6' 7") - a little disappointing since he has jumped 2.13 meters (6' 11¾").

He gets 785 points ... compared with 822 (2.02m) at the CUSA and 840 (2.04m) at the Texas Relays.

He's 115 points better than his CUSA pace, and 106 points shy of his Texas Relays pace.

Charlie will be in 18th heading into the final event of Day 1 - the 400 meters.

Day 2 will have two of his best events - the javelin and (gulp) ... the pole vault.

I suppose so that it can be live on ESPN2 (coverage starts at 6:30 PM CDT).

Charlie is in the 2nd of 3 sections.

There's a high chance of rain tomorrow in Austin - some of it in the middle of the day may be severe. They might be smart and try to move up some of the 2nd day events into the morning?

They have the flexibility to do so. That's what happened at C-USA.

As expected, Charlie had the slowest 400 meter time - by a lot - and will enter Day 2 in 19th place, and 298 out of 8th.

He's 95 points better than his CUSA Championship meet pace ... and 138 behind his personal-best pace.

Down to 18 after the 110 hurdles.

Only 19 started that event ... and T.J. Lawson (Kent State), who was in 3rd place, did not finish ... and is not competing in the discus throw).

Charlie finished second in the 1st flight of the discus (41.89m/137-5 ... 703 points).

There's now a weather delay.

With 5,236 points in the overall standings so far, he's 9th of the 10 first-flight competitors.

They knew the bad weather was coming - pretty poor planning on their part. The radar looks like the weather might pass in half an hour or so, although there's a little more bad weather slightly south of there that I guess could miss Austin?

Going to be a long day/night for the decathletes that are left competing.

If he doesn't no height in the PV, he has a chance to move up a few more spots. I think we're down to 17 competitors and one of them just NH'ed in the PV (the UTSA freshman). He might become an all-American by default (don't the top 16 get named AA)?
