Las Vegas Bowl gets PAC #2 team
https://twitter.com/JesseGranger_/status...9642202113

"Starting in 2020 the @LasVegasBowl will be played in the Raiders Stadium, and will feature teams from the PAC-12, SEC & Big Ten.

The bowl will have the No. 2 selection from the PAC-12 (after CFP) & that team will play SEC in ‘20 ‘22 & ‘24 and the Big Ten in ‘21, 23’ & ‘25."

I knew the bowl would be move to after Christmas! No reason that it shouldn't have been like that is the first place.
Also very surprised the LV Bowl will take the #2 selection.

I could have thrown this under the bowl thread but this is a big change for the LV Bowl.

It wasn't after Xmas primarily because Vegas doesn't need to juice tourism during that time of year, like other places do. I am actually surprised it is moving now for that reason, but probably desired to boost the profile of the game.

Thats a massive upgrade for that bowl. Its interesting becasue Im pretty sure the the opponent conferences are sending a #3-#5 pick.

RE: Las Vegas Bowl gets PAC #2 team
The Big Ten and SEC each have a "bowl pool" for most bowls after the CFP games and the Citrus Bowl, in which the conference office (presumably in consultation with the bowl teams) tries to assign each team to a bowl game.

Here are the SEC's rules.

https://www.secsports.com/article/268960...bowls-2025
Quote:SEC BOWLS AND SELECTION PROCESS (2020-2025)

Citrus Bowl (Orlando, FL) - first selection after CFP selection process

SEC POOL OF SIX BOWLS:

After the Citrus Bowl selects a team, the Conference, in consultation with the institutions and the bowls, will make assignments for bowl games in the SEC Pool of Six from all eligible SEC teams.

Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl (Houston, TX)

AutoZone Liberty Bowl (Memphis, TN)

Belk Bowl (Charlotte, NC) (2021, 2023, 2025)

Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl (Nashville, TN)

Las Vegas (Las Vegas, NV) vs. Pac-12 (2020, 2022, 2024)

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl (Jacksonville, FL)

Outback Bowl (Tampa, FL)

BOWLS SELECTIONS FOLLOWING THE POOL OF SIX:

The Birmingham Bowl and Gasparilla Bowl will collaborate on the selection of teams for these games.

Birmingham Bowl (Birmingham, AL)

Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa, FL)

Shows the might of the SEC and B1G.

That is a big coup for all of them.

That was the excuse they gave but because it wants to be a higher profile that excuse apparently doesn’t mean much. Where are all the Big 10 and SEC fans going to stay if everything is already booked like they keep saying?

This will work out differently in reality. For example, in 2016, Washington made the four team playoff. USC, the #2 team, went to the Rose Bowl. Colorado, the third team that season went to the Alamo Bowl, which is designated for the #2 team. Las Vegas will get the best team available after the bowl playoffs are determined. In 2016, they would have gotten Colorado.

This will work very well for the Pac-12. Schools that don't travel well (UCLA) will travel much better in the new, state-of-the-art Las Vegas Stadium. Sam Boyd Stadium was a dump.

I don't think it is quite "the hotels are full" sort of thing to where no one can find a room. I think it's more "the hotels are full enough that we don't need to spend $40 million" to lure teams for a bowl sort of thing.

but I think with that stadium, they feel the need bigger and more marquee events, so...

New Year's is busy in Vegas. The week before Christmas is one of their slowest weeks, so the rationale was, why not have a bowl game here before Christmas.

Yes, that's true. Of course, the reality is that if the Las Vegas Bowl wanted the Big Ten and SEC, it was going to have to move to a post-Christmas slot. Those conferences were never going to agree to a post-Christmas game. While it's obviously easier to find a room in Vegas pre-Christmas (and pretty much any popular tourist destination, for that matter), the trade-off is that a whole lot more fans have vacation time post-Christmas by comparison.

The week between Christmas and New Years is the busiest time to be in Orlando by far, as well. (I've been to Disney World on New Years Eve and it gets to *full capacity* every year. That is, they stop letting in any more people after around 12 pm. Just imagine what it takes for Disney World to stop letting in customers willing to pay $150-plus each by 12 pm... it's Time Square except that half of the crowd is screaming children.) Still, being in Orlando during that time of year is part of the attraction of the Citrus Bowl where it's an attractive destination in and of itself (just like LA with the Rose Bowl, New Orleans with the Sugar Bowl, and Miami with the Orange Bowl).

It is moving because the Bowl is now a "major" moving into the new NFL Stadium. Vegas really wants to get SEC schools to come, because the South, despite having 1/3rd the US population sends the fewest tourist to Las Vegas than any other region, well less than half what you'd expect, maybe only a quarter of the similar sized region of the B1G. Thus it is identified as the biggest potential growth region for Las Vegas tourism. (Expect not just FB but other advertising to ramp up in the South.)

Sharing with the B1G seems like a hedge. They know people from the Great Lakes region travel easily to the West, and the migration to the West is dominated by Midwesterners. Every other year Vegas would keep it fresh for a decade, and having a B1G school every other year saves you from a potential bust of few Southern fans traveling.

But both the upgrade in teams and targeting the SEC are part of a larger Las Vegas outreach to the South.

I still do not agree that a P5 steals a bowl game away from the MWC. Las Vegas is the home turf of MWC.

Las Vegas has over 150,000 hotel rooms and it is not that bad between Christmas and New Year's Eve. December is usually the coldest month in Las Vegas. I have been up to Las Vegas a few times during that period and it usually is cloudy, windy and cold. The rooms are more expensive after Christmas.

The MWC already moved their bowl game to Los Angeles. They will be playing that game at the new home of the Rams/Chargers against a Pac-12 team. Las Vegas is changing. It will be the home of the Raiders and UNLV and the Las Vegas Bowl. There may also be some neutral site games in Vegas between power conference teams and the Raiders are trying to get the 2025 Super Bowl in Las Vegas. Even UNLV has more power conference schools on the home schedule, starting with Cal and Arizona State in 2020.

It's a prestige thing. Before-Christmas bowls are regarded as the lowest-rung, least prestigious bowls.

After-Christmas, the close you get to NYD, the higher the prestige of the bowl.

Clearly, Las Vegas has upgraded this bowl, so they want to signal that as many ways as they can.

Plus, Vegas is fantastic between Christmas and New Year's. The weather is amazing, sunny and crisp and cool, heck downright cold once the sun goes down. Beautiful.

They didn't steal it because it effectively is not the same bowl. It has been significantly upgraded in terms of venue and money offered, so it was no longer a "G5" level bowl.

Not only that, but the MWC had to "steal" the Las Vegas Bowl to first get the tie-in for themselves. They stole it away from the WAC.

The Las Vegas Bowl existed before there even was a Mountain West Conference. For its first five years, the bowl ties were with the Big West and the MAC. Then the WAC had the tie-in, and then the MWC took it after the original MWC teams split off from the WAC.
