This is great news for the MAC, which launched this game and never should have been pushed out of it.
Agree. It honestly makes a lot of sense. IIRC, it was doing well as a Mac vs Big10 game. So, yeah---there was never any real reason to change it.

The ACC regained the Gator Bowl, so that plus the possible Outback Bowl is fine by me.

Regained in what sense? ACC teams have played in the last three Gator Bowls. I think the past 7-8 years, the ACC has rotated with the B1G for Gator slots.

ACC/B10 split Gator/Music starting 2014-2019. ACC will be in Music this year since they have played in Gator Bowl three times. I believe the regain comment means no sharing the Gator Bowl which is what the ACC had prior to the current cycle and the game was still on NBC.

Yep. The ACC had the bowl for like 15 years or something.
The problem with cannibalizing conferences is it severely limits bowl match-ups. I liked those games vs the Big East.

An ACC team played in every Gator Bowl from 1991 through 2010, when it was ACC vs. either Big XII or Big East. From 2011 through 2016 it was Big Ten vs. SEC. Once upon a time the ACC sent its #1 team to the Gator, IIRC.

RE: 2020-2025 bowl tie-ins
Another article on ACC Bowl, Raleigh N&O https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/arti...17313.html
Sounding like it will modify who is in what tier. Contingency placement instead of backup spots.
1. Orange vs SEC
1A. Outback vs SEC when B10 in Orange vs ACC
Upper Tier (ACC and Bowls work on placement
Belk Bowl vs SEC/B10
Camping World vs B12
Gator vs SEC,
Holiday vs P12
PinStripe
Lower Tier (My Guess Priority order if ACC can't fill tie-in)
Boston vs ACC (3)
Military vs AAC (2)
Sun vs P12 (1 - due to CBS)
Contingency if more than 9 teams (Contingency sounds more than a bowl back up, sounds like ESPN will place somehow)
Gasparilla vs SEC
First Responder vs B12 or G5
Birmingham vs SEC or AAC

I can't think of a single ACC school that relished the prospect of spending Christmas in Detroit, so this has to be seen as a win for the ACC.
And of course for the MAC. The loser here is the B1G, who loses a P5 opponent for a G5 opponent, though I'm sure their overall bowl profile has improved.

RE: 2020-2025 bowl tie-ins
Just a feeling Boston will be the new Detroit. I know I rather be in Tampa than Boston in December.
My guess ACC will probably do the following tiers or just combine Top and mid-tier.
1 Orange vs B10/SEC/ND
1A Outback if B10 goes to Orange.
Top Tier (Teams with 8+ Wins)
Orlando vs B12, Belk vs SEC/B10 Holiday vs P12 (FOX)
Mid Tier (Teams with 7+wins)
Gator vs SEC, Pin Stripe vs B10, Sun vs P12 (CBS)
Lower Tier (6 wins)
Boston vs AAC, Military vs AAC, Gasparilla vs SEC
If ACC goes for 11 slots, First Responder vs B12 or G5 (Could rotate First Responder/Armed Forces) (Last bowl in filling order)

Camping World Bowl (Orlando, Florida)
Hyundai Sun Bowl (El Paso, Texas)
Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman (Annapolis, Maryland)
New Era Pinstripe Bowl (New York City)
Outback Bowl (Tampa, Florida) – if the ACC’s opponent in the Capital One Orange Bowl is from the Big Ten
San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl (San Diego, California)
TaxSlayer Gator Bowl (Jacksonville, Florida)
Bowl game (Boston, Massachusetts) – managed by ESPN Events and Fenway Sports Management
ESPN Events and the following bowls will collaborate on the selection of one ACC team.

SERVPRO First Responder Bowl (Dallas, Texas)
In all, the ACC will annually have 10 guaranteed bowl berths in 2020-25.

Not a bad lineup, and very geographically dispersed. If you're an ACC school you might play in Miami one year, San Diego the next year, and Boston the year after that.
Which I think is pretty cool.

Yeah, nothing like going from the Orange Bowl to a bowl in a decrepit stadium on the other side of the continent then to a bowl where you freeze your ass off watching football in a stadium built for baseball.
The ACC is the only conference that could dump bowls in Shreveport and Beruit...I mean Detroit and still not make any advancement in bowl locations.

What's the alternative? I don't see any bowls out there that the ACC could have gotten that they didn't get, so IMO you have to give the commissioner credit.
Is the ACC lineup as good as the B1G and SEC lineups? No. But the ACC doesn't have the market strength of those leagues so that is an inevitable outcome. But it is very competitive with the Big 12 lineup and better than the PAC lineup.

This solves the mystery of who would be playing in the Gasparilla Bowl, the ACC or AAC. The answer is: Both.
