2019-20 offseason baseball discussion
I'll leave the player addition/deletion to BeagleUSM as he's usually spot on with that. Schedule wise there appears to be several quality teams looking for road and/or home weekend series that we could take advantage of.

https://collegebaseballinsider.com/open-...pen-dates/

Feb 14-16:
Kentucky looking for a road series

Feb 21-23:
- Texas Tech looking for home or road series, or a home and home series
- Southeastern La looking for home series or start of a home and away series but 2020 must be at SE La
- St John's looking for a road series (they had a 112 RPI in 2019 while 2018 was 33)...might be unable due to NY travel ban similar to Stony Brook situation
- Michigan looking for a 3 or 4 game road series (37 RPI in 2019 while 2018 was 63)
- Akron looking for a road series, this is their 1st season since shutting the program down after the 2015 season so should be an easy sweep but a killer RPI in all likelihood

Feb 28-March 1:
- Kentucky looking for a home series

March 6-8
- 05-stirthepot Arizona St looking for a 3 game home series, large guarantee available

RE: 2019-20 offseason baseball discussion
I will add this as far as the signees......we signed a lot less Jr College players this year than in previous years which could be a trend I hear:

https://southernmiss.com/news/2018/12/21...eriod.aspx

This link above was from back in December but we either signed or got a commitment from a freshman at PRCC (Reece Ewing -LHP/OF) who was a teammate of Gabe Shepard at Faith Academy in Mobile so not sure if he's coming for 2020 or 2021. Ewing was the ace of the staff at Faith Academy while Shepard was the #2 or #3.

Signees:
- Michael Brewer: 6-4, 215 RHP/IF (Missouri area high school)
- Cody Milligan: 5-9, 170 C/OF (Oklahoma St then juco)...interesting 2 positions to play IMO
- Brady Faust: 5-10, 174 INF (New Orleans area high school)
- Billy Garrity: 6-0, 200 OF (Sumrall high school)
- Dustin Dickerson: 5-4, 160 INF/RHP (West Jones high school)
- Chandler Best: 5-11, 185 LHP (Mobile area high school)
- Matt Adams: 6-1, 170 RHP (Texas area high school)
- Dallas Dyar: 6-3, 195 RHP (Clinton high school)
- Ben Etheridge: 6-1, 170 RHP (West Lauderdale high school)
- Isaiah Rhodes: 6-2, 155 RHP (McKinney, TX high school)
- Blake Wehunt: 6-6, 218 RHP (Georgia area high school)

5’4 160? Uhhhh

Kentucky and ASU should be getting a call. Heck, try to home and home with Texas Tech. Need to see more elite pitching so we aren’t getting it smoked past us come postseason.

Partly why I posted the heights and weights...and the fact the last one listed is a 6’6” high school pitcher

What jumped out to me even more was 6’2, 155.

Any idea on how far along the MLB draft will it take for Wallner and Powell to decide to return? For their best interests I hope they get drafted good enough that it’s a no brainer they go pro. Probably won’t know for sure what round each goes until later tonight (Wallner) or tomorrow (Powell).

I don’t see Powell getting drafted early enough. I don’t see a situation where Wallner comes back. I wouldn’t be mad if he did though.

Wallner drafted 39th overall to the Twins.

Anyone who hoped he may come back, it won’t happen. Minnesota boy getting to play for the team he grew up cheering for. He’s gonna get a chance at his dream.

Who is the highest drafted player in USM history? Just curious.

According to a tweet from USM media relations director Jack Duggan...... "Wallner is the highest USM player chosen in the MLB first year player draft"

and from southernmiss.com website: The previous highest Golden Eagle pick was Tommy Davis at No. 54 in the 1994 draft by the Baltimore Orioles.

Gabe is listed at 5'7". I doubt he is actually that tall. Altuve of the Astros is listed at 5'6". I seems like you can make it in baseball at any size. Obviously, not the case in just about every other major sport besides soccer.

Dickerson is not 5'4". He is more like 5'11" or 6'. He was the 5a player of the year and his dad is the infield coach for the Phillies(Bobby Dickerson) Needs to put on some weight though for durability. Saw him play in Pearl a few weeks ago at the State championship.

As anticipated, spot on. The draft is in the 25th round as of 2:10 pm Wednesday and still just Wallner and JC Keys (23rd round) are the only ones drafted. Knock on wood we should have our Friday/Saturday pitchers set for 2020... just not sure if Berry keeps Powell on Fridays or moves Gabe there. And from what I've tried to keep up with it appears 2 signees have been drafted... Cody Milligan: 5-9, 170 C/OF (Oklahoma St then juco) was taken in 9th round by Atlanta while Dallas Dyar: 6-3, 195 RHP (Clinton high school) was taken in 21st round by Philadephia

Don’t see Dyar signing, but not sure on Milligan.

On the southern miss website article from December we had Milligan listed as a C/OF while on the MLB draft tracker it has him listed as a 2B. Regardless, his draft slot value is just over $150k so it could be a coin flip.

With as good as we usually end up hitting against our opponent's Sunday starter I do like this. A few of our run totals this past season from weekend game 3 series: 16, 10, 9, 14, 11, 15, 8 and 10. I think there was only 1-2 games where we didn't score at least 6 runs in a weekend game 3. Powell was/is usually good for 7 innings on most starts this past year so it would be a win/win all around especially with the 10 run rule after 7 as Powell gave up 2 or fewer runs in 10 of his 16 starts, 3 runs or fewer in 12 of his 16 starts. Powell on Sundays greatly increases our chances of a) finishing the sweep, b) winning the series or c) avoiding the sweep.

who do you project as the Saturday pitcher as it would be a given Gabe would be the Friday guy in this situation?

Lefty from Mobile coming in named Chandler Best. He’s highly touted.
