According to public records Coaches Hardaway and Norvell make $200,000. Public records for salaries are often under reported for public entities because only regular source salary funds may be reported not total compensation.

Isnt there a law where the school cannot pay a coach more than the University President or something like that? Their salary above that comes from boosters not from the University, if I am not mistaken.

If he starts wearing a mask and eating with the same set of utensils, then I'll be worried. Until then, he appears to be an excellent addition.

Been a while since I've looked at the Higher Ed policy so I will defer on that question till I have a chance to look it up. But here is a partial answer that gives part of the info.

Here is an article on Rudd's Salary. There is his salary. Then there is a bonus the Board can choose to pay. Then there is a built in retention plan. So you have to be careful on what your read as salary. Then there are housing allowances, clothing allowances, car allowances, expense accounts. But the main thing is what does the university payout and what is paid by supporters of the university.

The University of Memphis Board of Trustees on Wednesday gave President M. David Rudd a $175,000 bonus, to be paid for using private funds, following a positive evaluation of his work.

The money, which amounts to nearly half of Rudd's $394,075 base salary, will come from a retention fund, where donors give dollars directly to the cause of keeping Rudd at the university. Rudd's base salary is already supplemented by $50,000 annually from the retention fund.

"I'm certain that he is a hot commodity, and we want to make sure he stays at our university," the board's first chairman, FedEx CFO Alan Graf, said.

The board also elected David North its new chairman Wednesday, with Carol Roberts serving as vice chairwoman.

The board did not publicly release Rudd's evaluation. Graf said during the meeting only that the evaluation was "excellent."

Graf said afterward that each board member evaluated Rudd on a series of metrics on a scale of excellent, good, poor, or not observed.

The board discussed the results of that survey, which was done online, in a closed-door executive session meeting ahead of the board's voting meeting Wednesday morning.

Graf said this fall, the board will begin evaluating Rudd on an annual basis. They are required by law to conduct a review once every three years. Rudd's last review was in 2017.

Graf said the board will also bring in a third-party group to do an analysis of Rudd's compensation.

Graf said the evaluation was positive because of the progress of the university in the two years since then-Gov. Bill Haslam's Focus Act created a board for the university separate from the Tennessee Board of Regents.

"David was so ready to perform at the level he's performing when he was freed from the Tennessee Board of Regents and he could actually get things done," Graf said.

Graf said Rudd "doesn't duck the issues" that face the university, like insufficient parking, congested traffic flow and a need for newer dormitories. Rudd is also spearheading a long-term initiative to raise the university's status as a premier research institution in the country, a designation known as Carnegie 1 status.

The bonus for Rudd, although paid for with private dollars, comes as he faces calls from faculty and staff to increase the university's minimum wage. Memphis has made incremental increases, but both the faculty and staff senates passed resolutions at the end of 2018 calling for a minimum wage of $15 an hour.

Rudd responded at the time with a letter declaring he "fully supports" the increase, but with a "sustainable financial model" in place.

Rudd told faculty and staff in a letter that he directed his CFO to "create a responsible financial model that provides for consistent increases in our minimum wage."
