RE: UNCW Baseball in 2020
RHP Sebastian Keane was drafted in the 11th round by the Red Sox, but turned them down to uphold his commitment to Northeastern.

That makes Keane, much like Zarion, one of the highest-drafted players to not sign this year. The two highest were also High Schoolers: Righty Brandon Sproat (Rangers, 7th round), who will be headed to Florida, and Catcher Wyatt Hendrie (Cubs, 10th round), who is committed to San Diego State.

The CAA looks like its going to be very competitive in the years ahead.

RE: UNCW Baseball in 2020
Zarion Sharpe's Summer with Chatham in the Cape Cod League has come to a close. This makes sense, as the main purpose was to up his draft stock. Now that he's committed to returning to the Seahawks, there's no reason to add to his workload. He finishes his Summer with 5 appearances, 3 starts, an 0-2 record, 1.35 ERA, 24 K and 6 BB over 20.0 Innings.

Meanwhile, Noah Bridges is on a 5-game hitting streak at the moment for the Wilmington Sharks. In that stretch he's gone 7-17 (.412) with a HR, 2 RBI, 6 Runs and a perfect 5-5 on SB attempts. Prior to that stretch he was hitting .219; he's lifted that to .286 on the Summer for the Sharks.

In addition, Matt Suggs won the American Legion Home Run Derby back on Thursday:

Quote:Post 10 catcher Matt Suggs wins American Legion home run derby

CHERRYVILLE, NC (WWAY)– Post 10 and UNCW baseball catcher Matt Suggs represented the area well on Thursday night winning the North Carolina American Legion home run derby at the State tournament in Cherryville.

Suggs claimed the title by hitting nine home run in the championship round. He finished with 28 total long balls throughout the derby.

Matt and Post 10 will start their quest towards back to back titles tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. against Gaston.

RE: UNCW Baseball in 2020
In the Hamptons League, Ty Wilson and the Westhampton Aviators made it to the championship series and won Game 1 of the 3-game series over Riverhead last night. They play Game 2 today at 4:30 and Game 3 (if necessary) tomorrow to wrap up the season.

The CPL runs fairly late, with the final day of the regular season being August 3rd and the playoffs running thru August 9 (10th if necessary). The Sharks might make the playoffs, which would extend the season for Noah and Zach Bridges, Mintz and Picollo.

The NECBL regular season runs until Aug 2, followed by the playoffs.

I was just thinking about the 2008 21 game baseball winning streak. Not talked about enough. School record. North Carolina record. The first year the team was nationally ranked in DI.

That was a REALLY underappreciated accomplishment!

Agreed fully! In 2016 I did a “top 10 moments of the last 10 years” for the 2005-15 years for the program. Not many read it at the time, but I listed the streak as my # 2 moment in that span:

Anyone know how the scrimmage went yesterday? I passed the Wolfpack baseball bus on way back to Raleigh yesterday evening.

Looks like we will only play UNC once this upcoming year. March 17 (Tuesday) at 6 in Chapel Hill.

Diamond Hawks Add Wells To 2020 Roster

Talented outfielder granted NCAA transfer waiver

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Red-shirt sophomore outfielder Tanner Wells was granted a waiver from the NCAA and will be eligible to play for the UNCW Baseball program beginning this season.

Wells joins the Seahawks after playing one season at High Point and red-shirting last season. As a freshman, he started 35-of-48 games played and helped the Panthers to an appearance in the Big South Championship finals. Wells was named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts.

Wells, a native of Goldsboro, N.C., hit .329 with seven doubles and four home runs. He was named Big South Rookie of the Week four times.

The Seahawks close out their fall schedule on Nov. 3 with a noon start at Coastal Carolina.

Went the game vs NCSU and both teams had at least 40 players in uniform and I am not talking walkons or guys transferring other than Wells and he already knew he was eligible to play. So what happens to these guys? Hoping that UNCW is not getting into the tryout for a spot deal but top programs use it as a matter of operation.

They allow tryouts. They can have as many players as they want for fall ball. The roster has to be trimmed to 35 by February 15. Those that are cut cannot participate with the team in any way after that date. The team can also have 27 traveling players for non conference and 24 for conference.
The travel roster can be changed and set for each trip right before they go. Which is usually decided a couple days prior.

I understand they can have tryouts but as I said this was not a tryout type situation but players who were either on the team last year or commits. It looks like a over commit deal and I don't know what else to call it. 35 spots and 42 players with a couple of guys not dressed who were not ready to play. I hate to see kids think they have a spot only to find out they have to make the team and I get it that its big boy baseball and that whole deal.

You've got to also keep in mind the number of redshirts in the fall roster group. Some of an incoming class may need a redshirt year to be ready to compete.

I don't know for certain, but i'd guess is no different than any other year.
