Makes sense. Good news either way. Either he gets more money out of the deal or returns.

RE: UNCW Baseball in 2020
I also heard yesterday that Noah Bridges will only be a temporary player for Bourne in the Cape Cod League.

Meanwhile, C Lucas Oxendine is unlikely to be on the roster next season. C Zach Bridges will also need to earn his spot on the roster via tryout. With 2 talented freshmen Catchers coming in and Matt Suggs the presumed opening day starter, we certainly should expect a lot more out of the Catcher position than what Oxendine and Bridges provided last year.

Bridges has struggled with Passed Balls so far this Summer for the Sharks.

Also, Matt Suggs is playing for American Legion Post 10. They are currently 6-1 (first place in Area II) and last time out (June 23), Suggs drew 4 walks and scored a run in a 3-2 win over Whiteville Post 137.

RE: UNCW Baseball in 2020
(06-02-2019 10:03 PM)Seahawk Nation 08 Wrote:  Well that was a tough way for the '19 season to end. We over-achieved down the stretch and won a Conference Title after scraping our way into the CAA Tournament, and gave UNC all they could handle in their own Regional. But then our frustrating play from the regular season came back to haunt us against Tennessee, and for the first time in program history, we went down 0-2 at a Regional.

Now we say so long to Coach Scalf, and hand the keys to Coach Hood to maintain our continuity as a program and build on the tremendous success Scalf had here. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic job. Remember, he was our primary recruiter and built many connections around the state and region over his years as the top assistant. He's as ready to go as a new Head Coach can be.

Here are some questions Coach Hood will need to answer as he begins the long preparation for 2020:

1. Who replaces Greg Jones at SS? Talk about tough shoes to fill. After Jones gets taken in the draft on Monday night, we're left with the knowledge that our starting shortstop for 2020 is currently not on campus. It's also unlikely that we'll find him in the JUCO ranks. So that means the starter will probably be a freshman.

Luckily we have a pair of talented kids coming in to compete for the SS job (provided they aren't drafted and signed out of High School), in Kohl Abrams and Riley Davis. Abrams' coach at Green Hope High School (NC) calls him an "elite level defender" due to his range, arm strength and hands, as well as a kid who can hit at the top of the lineup. The 6-0 Davis comes from West Grove, PA and is also listed as a RHP with 87 MPH fastball velocity according to Perfect Game.

2. How will Matt Suggs develop at C? The Catcher carousel went around and around in 2019, with Zachary Bridges, Doug Angeli and Lucas Oxendine all geting chances at regular catching duties, with none performing well enough defensively to hold on for long. But it was Wilmington product Matt Suggs who finally separated himself down the stretch, keeping himself in the lineup with his bat. The rookie went 1-4 with 2 RBI in an 8-3 victory over Elon at the CAA Tournament, and also had a pair of doubles in Harrisonburg; one against Northeastern and the other against W&M. His biggest hit, however, came in the Regional against UNC, when he slammed a 2-run double off the left field wall to drive in 2 and give UNCW a 4-3 lead in the 6th inning.

Given that UNCW has a strong history at the Catcher position historically (Chris Hatcher, Cody Stanley, Mark Carver, Nick Feight), its crucial that Suggs continues to develop in 2020, or that Coach Hood finds someone else who can play consistent defense. That could mean opportunities for a pair of freshmen Catchers, Kevin Pitarra and Matt Yip, who will be joining the 2020 Catcher group. Like Kohl Abrams, Pitarra also comes from Green Hope and had his coach signing his praises; he is being advertised as a strong defender who also hits with power. Yip comes from Herricks High School on Long Island, NY and also hit for power.

3. How do we reload the bullpen? The pen was the team's biggest strength in 2018, and the biggest reason we were able to knock off Ohio State and Regional host ECU at the Greenville Regional. But returning closer Henry Ryan took a huge step back between 2018 and '19. His ERA ballooned from 1.11 to 4.06 and his K/9 dropped from 8.6 to 6.4.

In addition, the team loses righties Blake Deatherage and Justin Crump and lefties Blake Morgan and Justin Walke to graduation. That leaves a returning relief corps of Ryan, redshirt senior righty Breydan Gorham (17 appearances, 4.58 ERA), redshirt junior righty Nick Bruno (22 appearances, 7.71 ERA) and sophomore righty Jason Hudak (12 appearances, 3.46 ERA). The only lefty of significance among the returning 2018 contributors is redshirt junior Rian Haire (7 appearances, 3.86 ERA). Coach Hood and Pitching Coach Matt Myers will need to find some gems among the new faces and develop the ones they have on the roster, because the most important factor in winning a Regional is having as many effective arms as possible.

Provided Luke Gesell doesn't get drafted and signed, we know the weekend rotation will likely be the same in '20 as it was in '19. And we also know the bullpen is basically up in the air. So how will the lineup shape up? This is my best guess with the information we have currently:

1. CF Noah Bridges (Jr., L)
2. 2B Jackson Meadows (Sr., R)
3. 3B Cole Weiss (Sr., L)
4. 1B Brooks Baldwin (So., S)
5. RF Riley Zayicek (Sr., L)
6. C Matt Suggs (So., R)
7. DH Chris Thorburn (So., L)
8. SS Kohl Abrams (Fr., R)
9. LF Noah Liles (Jr., L)

Other key hitters: 2B Doug Angeli (Jr., R); SS Riley Davis (Fr., R); C Kevin Pitatta (Fr., R); C Matt Yip (Fr., R); OF Aidan Smith (Fr., L)

You forgot to mention Jac Croom as a candidate for the SS position. Incoming Freshman started for New Hanover the last 3 years and they've played for a state title each year.

On the pitching front they have several incoming Freshman. Trent Black (hard throwing RH that was in the low 90's but had TJ surgery this spring so not sure how soon he's back), RHP Carter Holjes (mostly in the upper 80's but has touched 90), LHP Cole Benton (brother of Cody Benton, ECU recruit, Cole doesn't throw as hard but he can pitch) and LHP Jack Fisher. (he was really good at PG national tournament last summer) They also are bringing in Greyson Bailey, a kid that could be an OF or a P. As a P he's RH and has been in the upper 80's and I think touched 90 as well.

There is an article on Dubhub right now about coming and going post draft, unfortunately i've exceeded my views this month. Can someone summarize?

RE: UNCW Baseball in 2020
If Zarion is trying to raise his stock leading up to his July 12th signing deadline, he's doing everything he needs to to accomplish that. Last night he started a game against Bourne and tossed 3 scoreless innings, striking out 5 and walking 2.

He's now thrown 6 scoreless innings so far in the summer, has a 0.670 WHIP and batters in the Cape Cod League are hitting just .118 against him. He's struck out 9 and walked just 2.

Meanwhile for Post 10, Matt Suggs hit a HR and drove in 3 last night against Jacksonville Post 265 in a 12-2 win. The previous night, Suggs belted 2 HR's and drove in 6.

Post 10's record is now 9-1.

Hawks should be good if Zarion plays another year and they return their weekend rotation. It would have been good to get another big arm to add. We have a lefty that sat last year that should help out and his dad played at the Dub. Black would have been a great addition but has to sit out now with TJ.

I think Sharpe will be back next year and if he can stay healthy should be tough. While losing Black is not good he was not a guy that would step right in and contribute much IMO. Hudek is a guy to keep an eye on.
