Dumb, dumb, and more dumb.

Texas could have joined the SEC in ‘90, the Pac in ‘94, the Big Ten when they were thirsty....actually Texas could have joined any of those conferences anytime they wanted to.

Stop speculating, look at the facts. Texas likes where they are and the LHN works for THEM.

Because it was called the Longhorn Network. If it was not a University of Texas property, but was an actual network for Texas based FBS content, it would not have failed. Plus, like another poster stated, they were adding high school games.

It was an excuse to pay UT to stay out of the PAC.

It doesn’t matter if it ever turns a profit because that was never the point

Texas will never go to the PAC. That move would have a hard time being approved by the conservative state legislature. Plus, it would be a death sentence to the program. Many of the fans that follow Texas would throw a fit and stop supporting the program if they fled to a California based PAC-12.

Texas and Oklahoma have the easiest path to the playoffs and they know it. They will not leave the Big 12 as long as that is the case.

Thats all hyperbole. Texas wasn't going alone. A move with Tech, OU and OSU would have been approved. They wouldn't have even been in a division with any CA schools and could have garnered a TV contract similar to the SEC and B1G. The legislature doesn't get a vote last I checked when A&M ran off to the SEC.

First, Texas Tech and OSU don't have the academics to get invited to the PAC without the support of Texas and Oklahoma. Those Cali schools are snobby like that.

Second, While the legislature doesn't get to vote, they do hold the purse strings of every "public university" in the state, and can manipulate funding of any public institution. It is the same reason Texas Tech and Baylor were able to get into the Big 12.

Third, A&M's exit to the SEC was not opposed by the legislature. A&M is a conservative university, and the legislature is conservative too. Rick Perry, the governor at the time, was an A&M grad. If you know how things work in the state of Texas this stuff is easy to figure out.

If Texas and Oklahoma want to stay in the Big 12 there has to be trade offs. If they want that easy path to the playoffs they are going to have to accept that they will earn less tv revenue. If they want to be on par with the other blue bloods they need to be in a conference with other blue bloods.

Have you seen how much money Texas earns on an annual basis? $214,000,000 in annual revenue the last time I looked, and more than any other athletic department in college sports. They value the easy path over a few more million dollars.

Yeah, pretty much.

What does it say when twice within twenty years, when it was hitting the fan with the Big XII, Texas had standing invitations to join the PAC, but stuck by the car crash it’s in?

Egg is going to be all over the PAC’s face if when the Big XII’s contract ends, doesn’t someone throw another bone to UT to keep out of the PAC? The trifecta of fail?

It was intended to make money. They thought they would get Texas HS football, but then their announcer ran off his mouth about "watching Texas recruit Johnny Gray..."

The rest of the Big 12 threw a fit and that knocked off a reliable source of viewers who didn't wear Burnt Orange.

Judging from the commercials, they aren't making much from advertising. They will try to roll it into ESPN+ when it expires or move the rest of the Big 12 onto the platform.

Texas and Oklahoma don't need the money right now. For them to leave the Big 12 would require getting a massive amount of exposure, publicity and other intangibles that they can't get in the Big 12. These are where the SEC and Big Ten hold some cards.

ESPN saw the chance to stop this with what was essentially a bribe for UT to stay in the B12.

Yes it’s a money loser but it was also a loss leader to prevent a potentially disastrous scenario for them

2 political tagalongs?? TCU needs the Big 12 to survive or they will be left behind. I'm pretty certain the PAC, SEC and Big 10 won't invite them if the Big 12 dissolves.

The truth is Larry Scott flew to Lubbock with an invitation to join the PAC. If Tech was a political tagalong, Larry Scott would have hand delivered our invitation to the UT brass in Austin.

The state of Texas has 3 schools (UT, Tech and A&M) who belong in a power conference.

Just for the amusement of the board, please list for us all the power conferences that would take mighty Texas Tech alone, by itself and not as a required package deal of other schools to get the school(s) they really want

Just for amusement, please list for us all the power conferences that would take a small private school in Ft. Worth? Texas Tech is the best option based on our fan support. No one else comes close and no one has had the success in spring sports over the last 2 years in Texas. Fix football and aggy will be an afterthought

Tech basketball ---2 Elite 8 and a national championship appearances
Tech Baseball--- hosting a super for the 4th time in 5 years with a trip to Omaha on the line.

Aggy basketball/baseball is done during Sweet 16/Super Regionals and Arkansas should kill tcu's dreams soon. Go Arkansas

Of course, you could ask related questions.
Which conference other than the Big 12 would invite any Pac 12 schools?
Which conference other than the Pac 12 (and Big 12 again) would invite Texas A&M?
Would the Big 10 invite any SEC school other than Florida?

Texas Tech doesn't geographically fit much of anywhere. Its too far east to entice the Pac 12 by themselves. Its too far west to be of interest to anyone but the Big 12.

Well the SEC did, the Big 12 did, PAC extended an invitation and the B1G has shown interest in the past. ACC? That I can’t tell you. They’d probably love an AAU state flagship school in Texas but might have issue with not being close to any current members. Would probably lean yes though.

It's weird that they signed a 20 year contract. That seems absurdly long by TV Network standards.

Do you really think the B1G would reject Texas A&M, turn up their nose at Vandy? I can't imagine any conference saying "No, thank you" to Stanford, despite the miles. Some realignment moves are more practical than others, but certain schools are precious jewels. How about Michigan and Ohio State to the SEC? Would they be turned away?

Hell, I’m not even sure it’s losing money anymore. Last I heard, it was supposed to start showing a profit once the Direct TV deal kicked in around 2016. It wasnt going to be a huge profit by any means—but at least it wasnt costing ESPN money anymore.

Yes, so many seem to have a firm opinion that the LHN has been a disaster for ESPN, without any knowledge of the financial data, or even if their motivation for creating the LHN was primarily financial.

I dont see how it would be a money loser since they have distribution deals that treat it as a Texas RSN. Its not like they spend a lot of money on content for it.

Well, for ESPN the possible loss is from the $15m they pay Texas each year for the right to have the LHN. If the revenue generated by advertisements, subscriptions, etc. doesn't cover that fee, then there would be a loss even if ESPN incurs no production costs for content.
