Her statement is a positive outlook for the situation, but doesn't really explain the situation at all.

I was wondering the same- logical question. Perhaps they are already past that point? Kudos to her for being positive and supporting the team.

I seriously doubt this came out of nowhere. Students get progress reports on how good/bad they are doing. At the worst, the coaches knew about her midterm grades and probably had a discussion with her. She probably did have grade issues that the staff was aware of and spoke with her. Perhaps she received multiple warnings or perhaps it was just 1. I'm sure the coaches did as much as they could to try to get her to get her grades in order. Ultimately it is up to her to fix it and she didn't.
Based on her comments, she owned her mistake and kudos to her for getting out in front of it. It's a shame she can't play for JMU any longer, but I do wish her the best.

18 days until the season begins. Has anyone heard anything about the lineup, pitching, etc?

Hopefully we can get off to a solid start. It's been a long time since we entered a season without Ford or/and Good - Except for the season Megan was injured. 03-lmfao

I'm confident this team will be pretty good, but like football I'm not sure if it will be great in the upcoming season.

I'm excited.

Excited about Women's basketball in March. Excited about Softball. Excited about a quality coach for the men's basketball program. Excited about some sort of surprise transfer in football. That's about it for me until the fall.

RE: 2020 Dukes Softball
Some teams are kicking off their seasons today. Many others will be opening tomorrow. JMU of course doesn't open until the following weekend in Florida.

Our opponents in Clearwater...

1. #18 Texas Tech opens with 5 games in the Big Easy Classic in NoLA. They will also have a 6th game under their belt as they face #19 South Carolina prior to playing us on the 14th.

2. Kansas will face some tough competition out in Arizona this weekend with 5 games including 3 against ranked foes (Ariz, Ariz St, Tennessee). They will play 4 games - also of course against strong competition - in Clearwater before facing us, so they'll have 9 games played when they face us in our 2nd game on the season.

3. Mizzou is already in Clearwater this weekend for 5 games in a different event that will include the likes of Notre Dame, #8 Minnesota, Baylor and Louisville. Like Kansas, they will play 4 games the following weekend in Clearwater before facing us in our 3rd game.

4. #19 South Carolina hosts 4 different teams this weekend and will also play 4 games before facing us in Clearwater so they will have 8 games played before us.

Let's hope our team comes out firing on all cylinders as these opponents in Clearwater will have a chance to work out the early season jitters and kinks.

Might mean she got caught not going to class. That's a big no-no in most places.

Just add the JMU Sports calendar to your Outlook or Google calendars. It's an easy way to make sure you don't accidentally miss a game.

Wonder how much of a disadvantage that will be for us? (that they have have played a handful of games before we play them)

We had the same scenario last year, starting out a week later than our first group of opponents. We showed some rust in our 1st game.

I saw Coach Laporte’s interview yesterday. She brought up the two new pitchers but it definitely seems like they are counting on Alexander to carry most of the load. She also said they are starting a Freshman at catcher. It is the catcher I saw in the Fall. Evidently, she is well liked. Laporte said she will go through a brick wall for her coaches and teammates. Just a few more days.

Regarding CC, it is a bit of a dilemma I guess for Coach LaPorte this upcoming weekend at Clearwater. Meaning, we play 1 game on Friday and Sunday and 2 games on Saturday. It is pretty obvious these are big games for the Dukes - that is, stronger P5 non-conference competition that can help our RPI significantly with wins down the road.

Yet, I'm sure she wants to see her other pitchers as well. I'm guessing CC starts 3 of the 4 games and someone else starts 1 of the 2 games on Saturday. Starting of course could mean keep her in as long as she's effective (i.e., could go full game) or 4-5 innings yielding to backup(s) or less if ineffective of course. We'll see.

Fri- 3:00 vs Texas Tech
Sat- 1:30 vs Kansas
Sat- 6:00 vs Missouri
Sun- 12:30 vs South Carolina

I had thought they'd give CC off against Kansas, since they'd be the weakest of our opponents. But perhaps LaPorte spaces it out a little more and gives CC off against Missouri. Not sure what CC's stamina is like compared to what we were blessed with during Megan's reign.

Kinda thinking the same way. She definitely won't start both games Saturday I wouldn't think. Unclear this early in the season to know if Kansas is the weaker of the opponents. They lost 4 games this past weekend in Arizona, but were all against stellar competition.

I recall last year Tennessee didn't pitch their ace against us in Clearwater while holding her for a later game and we got the win. Sample size of 1 though I realize.

Last year, Megan logged 190 innings. 2 years ago while Megan was out for injury, CC was our ace and she logged 225 innings. Last year, CC went 24-1 in the circle while pitching 152 innings (with a 1.70 ERA). I think CC will be solid again. If LaPorte can find that 2nd (and 3rd) pitcher to step up, we should be good again and lessen the blow of Buresch departing (now at Ohio State where she is their ace...went 2-1 last weekend with a 0.64 ERA over 22 innings).

I saw her presser as well. Both incoming pitchers appear to be good additions. It sounds like the one from Bethune-Cookman is really good (sorry don't know her name yet).
Sounds like we will still have great heavy hitters and mentioned that the latter part of the lineup is very strong. Sounds like the fielding is much improved. The part that interested me the most was that they are planning to be more aggressive running the bases- love it!
I was concerned we might take a step back, but sounds like this may be an even better team than last year. Wow.

Dukes remain #20 in this week's USA Today Coaches poll. In Clearwater, we will play 17 Texas Tech, 18 South Carolina and 19 Missouri. Mizzou enters the poll this week.

After Clearwater, next week the Good Gals travel to now-25 UNCheat, who was just outside the top 25 a week ago. 2 games after that at 15 Georgia (aka Cesspool).

Also, future opponents include Va Tech who is just outside the top 25 at #27 looking in. Dukes will definitely be tested early in the season like normal. Next 3 weeks are pretty important indeed.

Wonder why we are starting later than ALL the rest of the Top 25 teams? Almost all of the ranked teams have 5 games under their belt.
https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/softball/d...ca-coaches

JMU, Minnesota and Northwestern are the only teams in this Tournament playing 4 games. The other 13 teams are playing 5.

RE: 2020 Dukes Softball
Alright, now that I have the right Friday the season starts today. 02-13-banana

#20 JMU versus #17 Texas Tech

The line is Even - aka pick 'em.

I do think it's an advantage to Texas Tech they have already played 5 games.

At this point the goal for this team should be hosting a regional. Super if everything fall right. To be hosting a regional we need to be top 16. The likely hood of that will be more apparent after the first couple weeks.

Six of our first Nine games are against teams ranked between #15 & #25. Hell of a schedule.

Scenarios after the first 9 games.

9-0 Not happening, but Super Regional ours to lose
8-1 Not likely happening, but we're on pace for a Super.
7-2 Great Start - we have a shot at a Super Regional
6-3 We're on pace and in the hunt to host a Regional
5-4 We're behind pace to host a Regional
4-5 or worse, let's settle down and get on a roll to prepare for the CAA & NCAA tournaments.
