2019 MLB Draft Thread (June 3-5)
The MLB Draft is coming up on June 3rd at 7 PM EST on MLB Network. That night will feature Rounds 1 and 2, with Rounds 3-10 taking place the following day, and wrapping up on Wednesday the 5th with Rounds 11-40.

Greg Jones should hear his name called on the first night, as he is expected to be a late 1st or 2nd rounder.

PerfectGame has Jones going # 32 to the Astros:

https://www.perfectgame.org/articles/Vie...icle=16353

Quote:32. Houston Astros | Greg Jones, SS, UNC Wilmington
Jones has seen his stock both fall and rise during this draft process and as we near the draft Jones is gaining some helium. The Astros like the athleticism and twitch of Jones and he could sneak his way back into the end of the first round.

MLB.com has Jones as their # 48 prospect, and mentions him in the running for fastest players in the draft. He's very likely the fastest player in the college ranks, at the very least:

https://www.mlb.com/news/top-tools-among...-prospects

Quote:Fastest runner: James Beard, OF, Loyd Star HS (Miss.)

Some scouts feel Beard might even be faster than Billy Hamilton, who coincidentally came out of the Mississippi high school ranks, just like Beard will. Beard ran a 6.21 60-yard dash at a Prospect Development Pipeline event last June.

Also in the running: Greg Jones, SS, UNC Wilmington; CJ Abrams, Blessed Trinity Catholic HS (Ga.); Jerrion Ealy, OF, Jackson Prep (Miss.); Connor Walsh, SS, Niceville HS (Fla.); Dasan Brown, OF, Abbey Park HS (Ont.); Corbin Carroll, OF, Lakeside HS (Wash.); Zach Watson, OF, LSU

RE: 2019 MLB Draft Thread (June 3-5)
Elon SP George Kirby is also expected to go in the 1st round, listed by most publications as a Top 25 prospect.

I'm not sure at this time what we can expect when it comes to other potential UNCW draftees, including our incoming freshmen class. All of the top websites require membership to view their draft prospect list. I can't remember the last draft where we did NOT have multiple players get taken, so expect a few to go, especially some of our pitchers (such as Gesell and Blake Deatherage).

I do know we don't have anyone else on MLB.com's Top 200 list: http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2019?list=draft

Here's the list of our incoming freshmen for 2020 to look out for during the draft: https://www.perfectgame.org/College/Coll...llege=1808

RE: 2019 MLB Draft Thread (June 3-5)
MLB.com put out their latest Mock Draft today. Evidently Greg upped his draft stock with his play late in the season, because they have him going to the Braves at 21, with the Pirates (18) and Cardinals (19) also considering him:

https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-mock-draft-on-june-2

Quote:21. Braves: Greg Jones, SS, UNC Wilmington

How many college players with 80 speed have you seen in any Draft? Jones got hot at the right time, too, playing well in conference tournament action.

Thebiglead.com has him going # 29 to the A's:

https://thebiglead.com/2019/06/03/2019-m...-abrams/6/

Quote:29. Oakland Athletics: Greg Jones, SS, UNC-Wilmington

Greg Jones boasts elite speed that puts him at the top of this class in the category. Jones has 42 stolen bases in 52 attempts this season, and the switch-hitter is slashing .341/.491/.543. He’s gotten on base a ton this year which should make him appealing as a leadoff option. He’s almost certain to move off shortstop and end up in center field down the road. His game-changing speed will be worth the risk.

The A’s have been connected to Jones for weeks now, but there’s a chance he’s played his way into the middle of the round. If that’s the case, they’ll likely go after another college bat.

As does CBSsports.com:

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlb-m...few-spots/

Quote:29
Athletics

Pick: SS Greg Jones, UNC Wilmington

Given who is still on the board and their reported preferences, a college bat is the likely pick here. The A's would jump at Kody Hoese, Michael Busch, or Will Wilson with this pick. All three are off the board in our mock draft though, so we'll give Oakland the fast-rising -- and fast-running -- Jones. The draft's fastest runner tore the cover off the ball in front of many scouts and executives the last two weeks, pushing him into first-round consideration. Even if he winds up in center field to get more value from his legs, Jones has a chance to be a dynamic leadoff man.

First mock draft pick: SS Will Wilson, NC State
Second mock draft pick: 1B/OF Michael Busch, UNC

RE: 2019 MLB Draft Thread (June 3-5)
Given that Brad Holt was taken # 33 by the Mets in 2008, Greg is a safe bet to be the highest-drafted Seahawk in program history tonight.

The program could use someone like Greg to make it big, and be a key financial contributor down the road to the program.

Those 3 players have to really pick it up tp get drafted IMO. The one thing they have in common that jumps out to me is the age of the guys. I am assuming they are kids who have reclassed for 2020 from 2019's. They would all be draft eligible as sophomores? Tall pitchers that throw hard are definitely the way to go these days.

Certainly not expecting any of the guys I listed to go early. In the 30s rounds sounds about right. I know scouts have come to our games to look at our pitchers in addition to Jones, so I imagine 1 or 2 will get taken.

Kep Brown should go somewhere as well or get picked up as an undrafted free agent. He was a 1st round projection coming out of High School before he got hurt. When you get taken as a Senior you lose your negotiating power, so teams are glad to use a late rounder and sign them dirt cheap. We'll see if that happens for Kep.

Ugh. That would be rough having to replace the left side of the infield.

And your two best bats on a team that was offensively challenged at times

Was Jones the first player in the CAA to get drafted tonight?

#22 That’s legit and has to be worth some good cash pay day on a signing bonus.

Best of luck to him and hope he has an amazing professional career.

Nevermind. Just read that Kirby went #20 to the Mariners.

Great night for Elon and UNCW. Two great players.

I heard tonight Jones will get about a $3.1M signing bonus.

Congrats Greg! Make that bank, and can’t wait to see you roaming CF at a Durham Bulls game in a couple years!
