Outstanding! Can't wait to see him in Durham.

He might have a chance to stay at SS with Tampa

RE: 2019 MLB Draft Thread (June 3-5)
As noted by Seahawkhoops earlier in the thread, New Hanover HS's Blake Walston went # 26 overall to the Diamondbacks. His signing bonus is estimated to be about $2.65M.

Some other notable picks from the last 2 nights:

* UNC's Tyler Baum, who we hit well against at the Regionals, went in Round 2 (# 66) to the A's
* JMU pitcher Nick Robertson went in Round 7 (# 221) to the Dodgers
* Charleston P Griffin McLarty went in Round 8 (# 228) to the Orioles
* Elon P Kyle Brnovich went in Round 8 (# 241) to the Angels
* Elon P Ty Adcock went in Round 8 (# 246) to the Mariners
* Campbell had 3 players taken between Rounds 1-9 (Seth Johnson - # 40; Matthew Barefoot - # 196; Tyson Messer - # 260)

Rounds 11-40 take place today starting at Noon. We should see several UNCW players and maybe an incoming freshman or 2 get taken somewhere in this range today.

Among our incoming 2019 recruiting class, RHP Trent Black (South Caldwell HS - NC) and 3B Ronald Evans II (Crossroads Flex HS - NC) are the likeliest candidates to be taken.

LHP Cole Benton (West Columbus - NC) and Aidan Smith (Topsail HS - NC) are possibilities too.

I probably asked this last too, but do the chances they end up on campus increases significantly after round 10?

Yes, significantly. The drop in signing money after round 5, then after round 10 is significant.

The later the better in terms of their chances to reach campus, but you never know how these things will go. You could have a 15th rounder elect to come to UNCW, and a 35th rounder elect to sign.

One indisputable truth is that High Schoolers on average make more money, and that's why about 60 % of current Major Leaguers were kids who were drafted and signed right out of High School. Unless you think you'll increase your draft stock, its better for many of these kids to go ahead and sign, because they start losing their negotiating power once they go to school. And 3 years later, their draft stock may fall.

And yes, its true that Greg Jones improved his draft stock. But remember, he was telling teams NOT to take him unless they were willing to give him $1.6M or more in signing bonus money, as he truly wanted to play here. Meaning no team was going to take him in the first 10 rounds or so. The Orioles took a gamble with him in Round 17 and offered $1.2M. He declined, and now he's going to get over $3M.

NC Central just had their SS, Corey Joyce, taken in the 12th round (# 352) by the Tigers. I believe that is their highest drafted player since they re-started their program in 2006.

P Tyler Driver just went in Round 18 (# 546) to the Mariners. He comes from the same school as one of our incoming recruits, 3B Ronald Evans II: Crossroads FLEX HS (NC).

Jay Stott (not sure if related to Tyler Stott) is the General Manager for Crossroads FLEX, which opened its doors in August 2016. He played ball at UNCW.

Jay and his brother Ray are also the co-founders of "Purpose Driven Baseball", for which Coach Scalf has come in to lead seminars/coaching sessions.

RE: 2019 MLB Draft Thread (June 3-5)
20 rounds in the books. I believe they take a bit of a break now.

Here's the list of CAA players taken thus far:

* Elon P George Kirby went in Round 1 (# 20) to the Mariners
* UNCW SS Greg Jones went in Round 1 (# 22) to the Rays
* JMU P Nick Robertson went in Round 7 (# 221) to the Dodgers
* Charleston P Griffin McLarty went in Round 8 (# 228) to the Orioles
* Elon P Kyle Brnovich went in Round 8 (# 241) to the Angels
* Elon P Ty Adcock went in Round 8 (# 246) to the Mariners
* Northeastern P Sean Mellen went in Round 14 (# 431) to the Dodgers
* Elon SS Cam Devanney went in Round 15 (# 463) to the Brewers
* JMU P Shelton Perkins went in Round 16 (# 468) to the Orioles
* JMU P Dan Goggin went in Round 17 (# 508) to the Mets
* UNCW P Zarion Sharpe went in Round 19 (# 575) to the Cardinals
* JMU P Kevin Kelly went in Round 19 (# 580) to the Indians

Kind of crazy that JMU has had 4 players (all pitchers) drafted thus far. That's a bit on an indictment on their coach that they haven't been more productive in the W-L column.

What if he came back and had a lock down year, how much could he improve his stock?

Not enough to justify losing his negotiation power. The amount of money he can get as a Junior in the 19th round probably matches or exceeds what he could get as a Senior taken in the 10th round.

RE: 2019 MLB Draft Thread (June 3-5)
When Zarion Sharpe came out of High School, he was ranked the # 361 lefty in the 2016 class by Perfect Game.

His low ranking was undoubtedly due to scouts questioning his competition level, coming from a small, private 4A program (Oakwood). Despite his 9-1 record and 0.33 ERA in his Senior season, the only "big boys" that gave him serious looks were ECU and UNCW, and he likely never would have gotten a legitimate shot by the Pirates.

Today, he was the 79th lefty pitcher taken. Fantastic stuff.
