Vanderbilt to renovate football stadium, basketball arena, baseball field
Quote:Vanderbilt athletics director Malcolm Turner announced a series of facility renovations for the football stadium, basketball arena, baseball field and more on Tuesday.

At Vanderbilt Stadium, the videoboard in the south end zone will be removed, and the videoboard in the north end zone will be replaced with “a cutting-edge board with a sharper and brighter image,” Turner said in the university release announcing the changes.

Renovations to the restrooms also will begin soon at the football stadium as part of a series of enhancements to address fans’ complaints about the poor game-day experience. Cramped restrooms were among the criticisms in an online fan survey conducted by The Tennessean about Vanderbilt Stadium.

“We’ve been listening to our loyal fans and will soon be making additional enhancements to improve the current experience,” Turner said.

Vanderbilt Stadium has not undergone a major renovation since 1981. Turner took over as athletics director on Feb. 1 with the task of fixing the long-standing problem with the stadium.

In Tuesday’s release, he said Vanderbilt is in the final stages of selecting a firm to help develop a master athletics facilities plan. And he and coach Derek Mason are planning renovations to the football locker room and team facilities besides the stadium.

From experience, "selecting a firm to help develop a master athletics facilities plan" means that the actual new facilities are many years away. Athletes at Vanderbilt today won't be there when anything new is completed.

Quote:“While we have very clear and obvious limitations to the current structure of Vanderbilt Stadium, we are considering any and all interim options to improve the gameday experience,” Turner said. “Beyond what we can feasibly address for this upcoming season, we will continue to explore additional opportunities to enhance the experience until a longer-term plan and solution is developed.

"To put it bluntly, we have some work to do to provide the first-class experience we all desire.”

Sounds like more fundamental changes are coming in the long run.

Their stadium needs more than cosmetic improvements.

I think I would just rebuild the stadium section by section. You don't have to tear the whole thing down and rebuild in one year. Take it down in thirds or something, but it needs to be rebuilt and slightly bigger.

But they can do that, if they want to do what Stanford did. Vandy doesn't need anything larger than "new" Stanford Stadium.
