I am one-clicking it right now. I bet it was outstanding live.

The sample size is pretty small since it was either Duke or KY who had the number 1 class each year. Established systems especially on the defensive side is a huge advantage.

The sample SIZE was 10 years. Not small in modern basketball.

You missed the point, it wasnt on the length of years it was the dominance of 2 teams. We have stats from 2 teams basically.

Are we ready to compare Penny's coaching ability to Coach K? I hope some day, but if anyone on this planet tells me Penny is as good of a coach as Coach K right now I would never listen to anything they ever had to say about any subject ever again...

Go ahead and say it, Penny is as good a coach as Coach K... I want to quote it from you.

That's a really good point.

That said, if we have an NIT season again this year, I'm not sure we'd repeat that. :)

If that happens (and I seriously doubt that) recruits won’t remember our preseason rankings. If we make S16, I think Penny will be able to maintain recruiting level that we are at now.
If they make the NCAAs with an exciting brand of basketball, recruiting wont slow a bit. You can always argue that a single elimination tourney isn't a true measure of a team.

You could argue that but I’m not sure the best kids would buy in. MOST seasons Duke, Kansas, KY (the teams we were recruiting against this past year) are playing into the second weekend. S16 has always been a barometer of success for out basketball program anyway.

But you are right: upsets are more common, more parity and best team doesn’t win a lot of years.

I think we fans inflate the value of winning the NCAA tourney when it comes to the priorities of one+done recruits. Their top priority is draft status. If James goes #1, Precious goes top 10, and Boogie goes 1st round - it won't matter to recruits where we finish. They will be lining up to sign.

It's why when UK had 5 first-rounders, Cal said it was "the biggest day in the history of Kentucky's program".

It's the same disconnect between fans' and players' priorities that lead to us fans saying things like "who starts doesn't matter". Sure, it doesn't matter to us. And we fans can love a bench guy even more than a starter. But if you think it's doesn't matter to the players, you've forgotten what it's like to be a player.

You should never listen to anything I say again. I have complete confidence in Penny's ability to out coach anyone, out recruit anyone, and to eventually out intimidate referees. I am confident that Penny will win three national championships in a row. Go ahead and say he won't.

I would be curious to see the timeline of polls from some of these guys. Primarily, if they docked us 5 positions when Rayjon stayed in the "draft", did they move us up 5 spots when he first committed? I think it's a convenient excuse for many who don't want to come out and say, they don't trust the coaching.

He didn’t raise the coaching issue at all. There were several cases of big rises and falls with no logic behind it. Most have us in top 6. A few outliers have us in the 10-16 range. I think serious CBB writers realize that Penny did a pretty good job his first year in raising our team ranking 100 spots and getting the Tigers back to being a very tough out at home.

Consensus poll but look at who comprises the voting. Memphis at 10.

Louisville #4? Shouldn't they be serving out an NCAA death penalty or at least a long-term ban playing college BB?

Left out just from memory ESPN, Andy Katz, Sporting News, USA Today. I don’t get Louisville even if they shouldn’t be on probation. I wish we were playing those SOBs this year.

Of course he didn't raise the coaching issue. That's my point. Some of these guys don't want to burn that bridge, so they're passive about it. But factually, there's no reason to have the Tigers outside the top 10 OTHER than you don't trust the coaching.

I believe it was Dauster who dropped us 10 points when Rayjon didn't come. My point was, did he move us up 10 points when Rayjon signed. Rhetorical. No. So there's something else at play. And it's not necessarily anti-Memphis bias. More likely, lack of confidence in "non-traditional" Penny.

I agree with that partly, but I think rankings matter with recruits too.

We just pulled in the #1 class with a NIT season.

We sure did, good point.

No. 10 on Andy Katz's new poll after we lost to...oh wait we didn't.

#10 is okay. The reason is kind of lame though.

Dropping us 6 spaces is pretty funny.

Katz looks lame. His overall cred fell about that much.

He basically flipped us with Maryland.

Other teams of note:

36. South Florida (NR): I’m in on the Bulls like I was with UCF last season. USF brings back three of the most important players at their position in guards Laquincy Rideau and David Collins as well big man Alexis Yetna.

35. NC State (35): Markell Johnson will be the anchor for this team. He can do a bit of everything to ensure the Wolfpack are in the mix for a bid.

34. Tennessee (32): The Vols could be a reach here. I’m still debating whether or not LSU or South Carolina should be on this list. So, this summer will be huge for the Vols to ensure that they can be back to being a contender in the SEC. They lost a lot of punch.

28. Houston (29): The Cougars will still be as tough a team to deal with as any in the American. That hasn’t changed. Defense will still be its identity.

Surprised that Cincinnati isn't listed.
