With Gardner being a low post force we really just need a guy that can get out of the way down low and stand out at the 3 point line and be a threat to make one and give Gardner space to work, something he had none of last year. Someone that can do that while also being a deterrent at the rim on Defense is ideal. He seems to have both of those things covered pretty well and be a great fit with Gardner the next 3 years. If he's anything more than that they could be a scary one two punch.
So you are going to rely on a 7 footer to be your 3 point threat?

I said "a" three point threat, not "the" three point threat. Basically we just need him to get out of Gardner's way in the post IMO and just stand at the 3 point line and have some purpose as a threat in the worst case scenario and pull the other center out there.

We were the 350th ranked 3 point % shooting team last year so Gardner had no space at all. All these JUCO's we brought in shoot at least 35%+. Should be able to shoot 3's respectably out of every position. I'm not sure Coleman even starts next year. I do think he will play some though and can fit that role at minimum.

By my count on VC, Dooley is bringing in 11 new players?! That’s 11 out of 13 allowed scholarships. Talk about rebuilding.

Possibly 12. We are in the final 3 with West Virginia and Oklahoma State for JUCO Javon Franklin who is expected to decide this weekend. We still have 4 players on the roster, 3 that were double digit scorers so I'm not even sure how it all gets sorted out other than Gardner for sure will be here.

BTW we aren't playing next year. Dooley said in an interview last week that you guys "didn't want to play".

Not a surprise since McGrath likes to schedule a hard OOC schedule. 05-stirthepot

All joking aside, at this point other than the proximity of the two schools UNCW doesn’t get much out of playing ECU. Though it looks like Dooley is getting it done recruiting wise. It remains to be seen if that can translate to more wins. But if he does turn around the ECU basketball program I would love to play ECU on a yearly basis.

With essentially a new team I don't think you can say we will be bad. In fact NC State pulled out of a game in works in Fayetteville next year after we started to seriously blow the team up and get these JUCOs. The implication was they wanted a layup and when we didn't look like that anymore Keats nixed it. Guess they are going to cream puff it up and go to the NIT again. ECU/ UNCW is at least a game with interest level for fans that draws better than a lot of the OOC trash we both play.

Speak for yourself there. One of the few places i'll give CB credit is the strength of his OOC schedule

There are teams on your schedule we will be better than, and that would certainly sell more tickets.

You've played 3 non D1's in 2 years under McGrath. You could start there.

Most of our non D1 games are ones we have to play as agreements to play in certain tournaments.

All 3 of those games were aligned with the 3 Non-Conference tournaments we've played in under McGrath, nothing we could do about it. I'm not gonna "arghue" with SJ on this point, I don't like the fact that we will not be playing ECU going forward. It's a good rivalry and hate to see it end. I'd be willing to bet this game was dropped to keep the series with UNCG going... ECU basically schedules the whole MEAC conference so they certainly can't talk about anyone's OOC scheduling.

If that's the case, it's a good move. But, if there is a spot the opens up, i don't mind playing EZ. It's nice to hear all those purple pansies yapping and then our 8-23 team beats em. hahaha

Half kidding...COGS

Nor have I, in fact I said our OOC was trash with plenty of spots to fit the game in. It's one reasons I hated to see a game that actually had some stakes and sold tickets not renewed. It's better than Mercer or Radford or whoever we play for sure. It's not on ECU's side this time though, they pretty clearly asked your coach if they wanted to keep playing.

I'll say this, this roster looks pretty good on paper. I am pretty high on about 7 or 8 of the newcomers. I'll be shocked if we don't turn it around in a big way. Yes our OOC is trash but ECU/UNCW should always play H&H.

I agree that ECU/UNCW should always play H&H. Outside of recruiting, there's not much that McGrath has done that makes much sense IMO. You can add doing away with this game to that list.

Yeah it's a good game for attendance on both fronts. I don't like our OOC, I am hopeful this is the final year of this garbage.

Our recruiting however appears to have hit another level. Our two JUCO bigs might be projects, the remainder of the class looks like P5/AAC level recruits honestly.

Honestly, our rivalry has not been the same since ECU backed out the first time. But I would like to see it get back to what it was. And hopefully it will get back to that. It could be beneficial for both teams if we both grow our programs.

I would agree, part of that has been due to our products (minus your Keats years). I also don't like the fact the game is generally played with no students.

This really feels like a turning point class for us. I do think the AAC is going to be brutal next year, so we will see if it's good enough to get us to the upper half of the league.

That may have been the deciding point if McGrath backed out of the deal. There's a lot of scenarios that could've led to the decision. Could be an opportunity to simply schedule a better team, could be the timing during the winter break, could be McGrath is tired of beating ECU. Who knows.
