RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
The women play the first of three games Saturday on their trip to Vancouver, British Columbia.

We know very little about the opponents, who are a mixture of club and college teams.

Alabama, which had a worse record and lower RPI than Kent State last year, played two of the same schools earlier this month and scored 104 points both times.

I was able to watch[/b] practice on Wednesday. This team could well be a contender in the MAC this season. The three freshmen were especially impressive.

The Flashes return 83.6 percent of their scoring from a team that went 20-13 and won a first-round game in the WNIT.

The women beat VK Select, a British Columbia club team, 90-69 in the first game of their international tour.

Asiah Dingle had nine steals, 7 assists and 1u points.

Ohio has to be the hands down favorite to win the MAC this year, but I could definitely see Kent State contending for second. Eastern Michigan should be tough this year, and I expect Buffalo will be good again.

RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
I’d agree with OU as favorite, but Kent lost to them by only two points in both games last season.

For three years, Eastern has supposed to have had the best recruiting class in the MAC. But they’ve never had a winning record. Maybe they’ll finally have a breakthrough, but I have to wonder what’s happening there

Buffalo seems to have a great freshman class. Miami has a lot back. Toledo and Central should still be good. And Ball State ought to be back.

Will be a tough league again.

RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
The women won big again on their Canadian trip, beating the University of British Columbia 94-54 Sunday.

KSU's three freshmen — Katie Shumate, Nila Blackford and Clare Kelly — combined for 42 points. Shumate, a 5-11 guard from Newark High School, had 19 and 12 rebounds.

Kent has its top four scorers back from last year's 20-13 team. And freshmen are leading the team in scoring. This could be quite a team.

Sophomore Asiah Dingle scored 17 for the second game in a row, along with six steals and six assists. She had nine steals and seven assists in Saturday's 90-68 win over VK Elite, a Vancouver club team.

The women ended play on their Vancouver trip with a 103-54 pasting of Vancouver Island University.

In three games in Canada, the Flashes scored 287 points.

Asiah Dingle led KSU with 16 points, 7 assists and 4 steals. Four other Flashes scored in double figures.

RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
Three things we learned from the women's three-game sweep in British Columbia:

1. Asiah Dingle (16.7 points, 6.7 assists, 6.3 steals) has stepped up her game.

2. KSU's three incoming freshmen combined to average 30 points a game. That's better than last year's freshman class averaged, That group scored scored about 20 points a game — 44% of the team's points, which was the third highest percentage in the country.

3. The Flashes have the potential to score a lot of points. They averaged 95.6 in Vancouver. Eight players scored in double figures at least once even though no one player more than 25 minutes in a game.

The competition wasn't great, but Kent's numbers compare well to Alabama's. The Crimson Tide played two of the same teams the previous week.

RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
Part 2 of post on the Vancouver trip is posted on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

Shooting was a weakness of the team last season, especially from 2-point distance. Kent's freshmen and sophomore Asiah Dingle shot very well on the trip.

Biggest losses to graduation were in rebounding and defense. Freshmen were the team's top two rebounders in British Columbia.

And 6-4 junior transfer Linsey Marchese from Indiana scored in double figures in all three games. Sadly, she won't be eligible to play until 2020-21.

The lack of a true center is the biggest hole on this year's team. Next year will be different.

RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
After struggling with it all summer, I finally have a blog post on KSU's three new freshmen.

They could be one of the top three classes in school history.

The three — wing Katie Shumate, guard Clare Kelly and forward Nila Blackford — combined to score almost a third of KSU's points on the team's Vancouver trip earlier this month. All outscored senior Megan Carter, KSU's leading scorer last year, and sophomore Lindsay Thall, who led the MAC in 30-point percentage last season. (To be fair, neither Carter nor Thall had a particular good trip statistically.)

In high school, the freshmen scored a total of exactly 4,500 points. They made a combined eight all-state teams.

Shumate had 10 points and 12 rebounds in one game. Blackford led the team in rebounding. Kelly made 9 of 18 three-point shots.

If I had to guess the starting lineup right now, it would include Blackford and Shumate, along with Carter, Thall and sophomore Asiah Dingle.

There is a saying that two good recruiting classes back to back leads to a championship team. When 6-4 transfer Linsey Marchese is eligible next season, they'll be even better.

Whether they win the MAC in the next three years depends on how well Buffalo, Ohio, Central Michigan and Toledo recruit. Buffalo seems to have a very good freshman class, too.

The other two top recruiting classes?

-- Last year's freshmen, who scored 44% of Kent's points on a team that went 20-13.

-- Bob Lindsay's first class in 1990, which included Tracey Lynn and Kathy Carroll, both of whom went on to be 1,000-point scorers, and Michelle Burden, still KSU's leader in game, season and career assists.

Details on the freshmen are on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
Women's MAC schedule, released Wednesday, has them playing Toledo and Ball State home and away.

They'll of course play all Eastern teams home and home, and last five games are all against East teams.

They play Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois only in Kent and Central Michigan and Western Michigan only on the road.

Details and some notes on the conference opponents are on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

Thanks for all of the great information on your blog. One small correction regarding your blog post. If memory serves, Central Michigan lost its first-round NCAA game in a nail-biter to Michigan State.

You mentioned that Ohio has its top four starters back. In addition, the Bobcats have the services of Caitlyn Kroll, who averaged 13.4 ppg and was voted newcomer of the year in the Northeast Conference in her freshman year at St. Francis (Pa.) before transferring to Ohio and sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer rules.

As a Toledo fan, I hope you're right about the Rockets being able to contend with the top teams in the conference. However, the Rockets lost three starters to graduation, including their best player. A repeat of last year's six seed in the conference tournament should probably be considered a success. Toledo still has a good reputation from its success in Coach Cullop's early years, but the last time the Rockets were better than 12-6 in the conference was 2012-13.

In addition to having four starters back, Northern Illinois will have Courtney Woods, who returns for a redshirt senior year after undergoing knee surgery early last season. Woods averaged 22 ppg and 8 rpg during her junior season.

I think Central Michigan will be only average this season. Last year the Chips rode the backs of two amazing players, both of whom are gone. I don't see a lot of talent on that roster, although I have no idea what new players are coming in this year.

These are great thoughts from Dwight of Toledo. I also published them on the blog (http://wbbflashes.com) with some comments of my own.

But after reading them, I definitely think more of Northern Illinois and a little less of Toledo. And the last thing the rest of the MAC needs is for Ohio to get another good guard.

Thanks for publishing me. I always appreciate your blog posts. Because of your blog, I know more about the Flashes than I do about any other team except the Rockets.

RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
For the first time I remember, the women's game will be the featured one in a doubleheader at the M.A.C.C.

It will be the game vs. Ohio State on Thursday, Nov. 21. The men will play Division II Concord at 5; the women will play a half hour after that game ends.

I can't remember an evening game when the men played before the women. Afternoon games have gone both ways, depending on what television wanted.

A couple of other unusual times:
-- The women's game against Michigan at the Akron Classic will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15. Not a great time for fans.
-- Their game against St. Bonaventure Tuesday, Dec. 3, will start at noon. It's a "school day" game for elementary and secondary students.

The times were announced over the last week.

Practice for the women started Thursday. The Flashes return four starters and 83.4 percent of their scoring from a 20-13 season. They have three promising freshmen, two of whom could well be in the starting lineup their first game at Duquesne Nov. 5.

Senior Ali Poole, who started 19 games last season, is recovering from a knee injury suffered in summer practice. Her status is uncertain, though coach Todd Starkey says she's ahead of where he expected. No surgery so far.

More on all that on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
The women's was Media Day was Wednesday. Highlights:

-- Starkey thinks this could be the most exciting team of his time here. He was talking as much about the style of play as record.
-- He did say that this team is very capable of bettering last season's 20-13 record.
-- He said the team that thanks to two good recruiting classes, the team has the athleticism to play a more "risky" defense, trying to force the action to turn defense into offense.
-- He remains high on the three freshmen in this year's class, but he said the team's youth could be a weakness.
-- First player he mentioned, as usual, was point guard Asiah Dingle, who he called "a nightmare to stop in transition"
-- Senior Ali Poole, who has started 48 games in her career, remains sidelined with a knee injury. It is improving. I think she'll play this year; I'm not sure when.
-- The team will have closed scrimmages against Cleveland State and Pittsburgh in the next two weeks.
-- First game is Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Duquesne in Pittsburgh.

RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
I forgot to post here a note from earlier in the week.

The team has a verbal commitment from 6-3 Lexi Jackson of suburban Pittsburgh. She averaged 16 points and 18 rebounds last season. In one game, she had a triple double of 37 points, 16 rebounds and 11 blocks. She was third-team all-Pennsylvania and was the tallest player on any of the three teams.

The team also has a verbal from Casey Santoro, a two-time first-team all-state player from Bellevue. She's also two-time district player of the year, going into her senior season. She averaged 22 points a game last season, including a 40-point game where she hit 10 three-point shots.

The team has a third commitment from a 6-4 post player from Ohio. But I'm told she isn't much for social media, and I get names from Twitter posts from the player or her AAU team when they announce it.

Coaches can't talk about recruits until signing day, which is Nov. 13.

A 6-4 and a 6-3 recruit, along 6-4 Indiana transfer Linsey Marchese, would give the team the biggest set of post players I can remember. Marchese has to sit out this season because of NCAA transfer rules.

RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
MAC coaches picked the Kent State women to finish third in the East behind Ohio and Buffalo.

Senior guard Megan Carter was named to the preseason all-East team.

Following KSU were Miami, Akron and Bowling Green.

Central Michigan was picked to win the MAC West by a point over Northern Illinois. Central lost two first-team all-MAC players, but three other starters return. NIU has four starters back, plus Courtney Woods, a first-team all-MAC player who missed almost all last season with an injury.

After those two teams were Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Ball State and Western Michigan.

Ohio, which has four starters back from a team that went 30-6, was the overwhelming favorite to win the conference overall title and the MAC Tournament.

--

Really, after Ohio the standings are anyone's guess. On paper, Buffalo, Kent State, Central, NIU, Miami, Toledo and Ball State all look to be competitive. (Ball State was under-rated, in my opinion.)

We'll see soon. The season opens next week. Kent State plays at Duquesne on Tuesday.

RE: 2019-20 women's basketball
The women open with two games on the road — Duquesne on Tuesday and Youngstown State next Saturday.

They may be the most important games of the non-conference season. Both opponents have been consistent winners over the last few years. But both had significant graduation losses, so it's very possible the Flashes could start the season with a couple of away wins.

Other key games on the pre-conference are the three against Big Ten opponents — Michigan, Ohio State and Purdue — plus a home game against Northeast Conference favorite Robert Morris and a neutral site game against Troy, picked to finish second in the Sun Belt Conference.

A game-by-game preview of the non-onference is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.
