Baseball Announces Second Signee Of Spring Period

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Damian Dalfrey, a 6-2, 210-pound, right-handed pitcher from LSU - Eunice in Eunice, La., to a national letter of intent for the 2004-05 academic year. This marks the second signee of the spring period and ninth signing overall for the Golden Eagles.

"I'm glad Damian has decided to attend Southern Miss," Palmer said. "He will make an immediate impact on our team next season. He has great control and doesn't walk many batters. He can pitch 88-90 mph and has an above average breaking pitch. If he keeps working hard, he could have an outstanding career."

Dalfrey is a two-year starter for Coach Jeff Willis at LSU - Eunice. He has helped lead his team to a 40-9 record and is currently No. 3 in the nation in strikeouts per game. Dalfrey is currently 7-2 with a 2.55 ERA in 60.1 innings pitched. He has struck out 91 batters and walked 18. He has pitched five complete games and three shutouts.

Last year as a freshman, he helped lead LSU - Eunice to a 39-14 record, ranking as high as No. 3 in the nation and advancing to the regional championship game. He finished with a 5-2 record with a 3.68 ERA in 40.0 innings pitched. He struck out 38, walked 12 and pitched four complete games.

Dalfrey was a four-year letterwinner for Coach Dawsin Durbin at Carencro High School in Carencro, La. He was named first-team all-district. He also lettered in football and soccer, earning all-district in both sports and first-team All-Acadiana Parish, all-state and academic all-state in football. Dalfrey was named to the Who's Who Among High School Students and the Carencro Student Of The Year.

Dalfrey also was recruited by TCU, McNeese State and Northwestern (La.) State.

The Golden Eagles other early signees are Cole Besinger (6-2, 195, LHP, Minette, Ala./Faulkner State CC), Bo Davis (6-0, 175, OF, Meridian, Miss./West Lauderdale HS), Jacob Fowler (5-11, 185, OF, Tuscaloosa, Ala./Bevill State Community College), Jonathan Johnston (6-2, 190, RHP, Jackson, Miss./Northwest Rankin HS), Bradley Owen (6-5, 215, LHP, Semmes, Ala.), David Steele (6-2, 190, OF, Mandeville, La./Mandeville HS), Trey Sutton (6-0, 170, INF, Laurel, Miss./West Jones HS) and Ben Wade (6-2, 180, RHP, Eatonville, Miss./North Forrest HS).
