I'm not watching the game but I'm guessing you don't know the difference between playing dirty and a pitcher who just can't find the plate.

Nah. He was trying brush him back when he was trying to bunt.

I don’t know that it’s necessarily dirty. I couldn’t tell where Franklin was standing. Definitely not unusual for a bunt.

+1

That’s were pitchers are taught to throw in a bunt situation. Up and in. Very difficult to get that pitch done fair.

RE: Saturday vs USM: Game One
T5: Slater lofts 0-2 pitch down the LF line ... Cox, Trei & Comeaux converge ... Trei nearly caught it, but they all collided and the ball dropped to the ground. Called fair. Runner to 2nd. Grrr. "This has to be a troubling trend, if you're Rice."

Wallner flies out to left on 1-1 pitch.

Bowen hit by the first pitch. Grrr.

Donaldson ... two high balls give a 3-1 count. Wiff! 3-2 count. "Lewis giving a skunk eye" to the runner at 2nd. Strike 3 swinging!!

Franklin slops first pitch into left field, just past diving Comeaux. Runner is just out at the plate ... but called safe, due to interference by Comeaux, who collided (unintentionally) with the USM runner as he was getting up from his dive. Sigh.

3-0, USM.

Lynch flies out to Gneiting on 0-1 pitch to end the inning.

3-0, USM .... heading to B5.

Need some runs, Rice!!! Break up the perfect no-no!!!

Only 2 errors in the box score, but some very questionable defense from the Owl fielders.

It’s been tough to be an Owl pitcher this year with the limited offensive and defensive support.

B5:

Dunlap: Routine 6-3 on 1-1 pitch.

Edwards: Flailing wiff at low-outside pitch. Ball, high. Call strike, low in the zone. High-strike pitch, fouled back. Next pitch is a little higher (out of the zone) ... wiff!! Grrr.

Cox: Ball. Wiff on pitch in the middle of the zone. Another pitch in the middle ... popped up to 1B. Grrr.

Shepard still perfect!

3-0, USM ... after 5.

3-0

T6:

Lewis pitching.

Cooper: Ball, outside. Call strike, "at the knees". Good pitch, fouled off. Lewis double-kicks, throws a strike ... WIFF! Interesting motion there!

Montenegro: First pitch flyout to Cox.

Guidry: Called strike on inside paint. Routine 4-3 groundout. A 1-2-3 inning ... Yay!!

ESPN announcer: "Blair Lewis hemorrhaging the bleeding a little for the Owls." WTF?? :-)

3-0, USM ... heading to B6.

It’s actually 58, but your point remains.

The stats are slow to update

No attendance figures are shown in the box scores, but the stadium doesn’t look particularly full on the ESPN+ broadcast. Anyone actually there that can comment on attendance?

Perfect game gone.

Now maybe the Owls can avoid the no-no?

Owls making the Freshman look like Verlander.

But they’ve done that a lot this season...actually for the last few seasons.

B6:

Collins: Ball, high/inside. Called strike, "Right down Main Street." Ball, in the dirt, outside. Ball, just low. Is this our first 3-ball count? Ball, low & outside. Walk. "There goes the perfect game bid for Shepard."

Antonio: Wiff on inside-ish pitch. Awkward wiff on outside-ish pitch. Call strike 3 ... at the knees. Great pitch.

Announcer says Duluc has replaced Cox ... playing RF, Antonio to left.

Beaulaurier: Ball, low. Call strike, low-inside corner. Ball, close! Ball 3! Outside ... but called a strike! (Nearly Savery territory.) WIFF. (Pitch was well inside the zone.)

Comeaux: "The only Owl who has yet to go down on strikes." Ball, just low. Ball, way low & outside. Ball 3, low. "That was close!" Call strike. "Down Main Street." Next pitch is in the zone, a little inside ... popped up to 2B, just behind the bag. Sigh.

3-0, USM ... after 6. It no longer a perfect game ... just a simple no-hitter. Grrr.

77 pitches for Shepard, who's coming back from Tommy John surgery.

Slater: 3-1 pitch can-o-corn to center.

Wallner: First pitch no-doubter over RF fence. "Bye-bye ... It's gone!"

"Duluc took a step, then said, 'Never mind.' "

4-0, USM.

T7, cont'd:

Bowen --- Back-to-back dingers. Over LF fence. Antonio gave a valiant leap over the fence to try to catch it. Sigh.

5-0, USM.

"Dalton wood starting to get loose for the Owls."

So, looks like we won't end up with that better winning percentage than last year, after all.

Lynch: Ball, low/inside. Ball, way outside. Pitch very low ... 2-ironed just over Wood's head into center. Single. RBI. Sigh.

6-0.

Lynch. Hotshot foul to USM coach, who bobbles it, getting hoots from the crowd. Wild pitch allows runner to get to second. 3-1 pitch lined to Trei. Whew!

6-0, USM ... heading to B7.

Time for a bigtime rally, Rice!!!

B7:

Heart of the order. High time for some hits and runs!

Shepard still on the mound. (Duh!!)

Gneiting: Ball, outside. Call strike. Ball, low, nearly in the dirt. Wiff on ball near the low-inside corner. Wiff on pitch way low & outside. Grrr.

Trei: Call strike, outside corner. Pitch in the same place, fouled back. Protect swing on outside pitch, fouled off. Wiff on pitch low-outside off the plate. Grrr.

Dunlap: Fouled at the plate. Popup to 3b, just at the outfield grass.

That's the heart of our batting order.

"And the no-hitter continues."

6-0, USM ... after 7.
