RE: 2019 Offense
I'd be interested to see the level of competition they played against to amass those stats.

That’s hard to do with the partial seasons. But Lynch had the 122/124 ranked schedule and Harnish had 117/120 ranked schedule. But that never stops anyone from remembering them so fondly.

The way those "rankings" are compiled is, dubious or suspect at best, but at least they played the full schedule, good and bad. They played against any tough OOC opponents plus TURDledo and the rest of the top of the MAC (along with the dregs).

Maddie was never a starter, he was a backup and even third-string or lower, and typically only played due to injury to players above him on the depth chart. To me, it seems like he only played against the bottom of the MAC and FCS teams. If I'm not mistaken, he took over (due to injury) the season NIU played at Comiskey Park but when that vital game against the TURDS came up, Graham was put back in to start that game. I think there's a reason why Maddie was never trusted in games that mattered. Sure he could beat Buffalo 42-13 or something like that when Buffalo was one of the worst teams in FBS but what did he ever do against teams with a pulse?

As I mentioned earlier, agree to disagree.

I have my opinion and 'Rabid Squirrel' and 'PersonWithAClue' can have theirs.

Drew Hare was a helluva player Tough, leader, and could throw the ball. That's what you want in a QB.

RE: 2019 Offense
Good thing Bowers has finally shown up. Maybe soon (hopefully) we get some pre-season practice updates -- or even speculation -- and have some "2019 Offense" to talk about. Aug. 31 can't get here fast enough.

Lynch - Elite runner/good passer = great overall

I'll take a turn.

Harnish - Very good runner/very good passer
Lynch - Great runner/good passer
Hare - Very good runner/very good passer
Maddie - Good runner/fair passer
Santa - Fair runner/good passer
Childers - Fair runner/fair passer

So, pretty much no matter how you look at it Childers has been our weakest QB since the Harnish Jr. & Sr. years. While the argument can be made Childers was held back by coaching, Hare, Maddie and Santa had the same HC. Based on Bowers past you would have to call him a very good passer and a fair runner. I would think Bowers looked as our O and saw a huge need for an upgrade at QB that he felt he could immediately supply, and I would think there was some serious conversations between Bowers and Hammock and company about his potential to be the starter. Unless Bowers does not live up to his hype, I do not see how he is not the starter for the opener.

Lynch beat Iowa despite having not as good a defense behind him, instead of being shellacked by them essentially 31-0. Harnish won both his bowl games and in 2010 with the weak schedule most of the games were not close, we were mauling MAC teams instead of winning due to the other team missing an extra point.

You are being overly kind to Childers in rating him as an average passer. Perhaps he can become average with better coaching.

I didn't think this was new thread materials so I just posted it in here.

NIU ranked 86 in the Orlando Sentinel 2019 rankings. I would say writers are being cautious about NIU with all the changes, some of which (such as Bowers) is not even mentioned.

The only grade anyone can give Childers is "incomplete". Impossible to evaluate a qb under possibly the worst offensive coach in college football (not an exaggeration)

Congratulations!!! This is the 1,000,000th time you have blamed anything that happens on Coach Carey. You win season tickets for life to Temple football games!!!

Obviously Marcus has some accuracy issues and lacks big play ability, but he does have some redeeming qualities. For one he takes care of the ball. That’s important. Also, the kids tough. He’s there every game. That’s crucial for success.

I agree with your assessment and I will add that he is a great competitor.

not saying he will make huge improvements but Childers going into his RS Junior year. We are comparing JR & SR against his Freshman/Sophomore year.

That’s certainly fair. But what’s concerning is he regressed from year 1 to year 2. Progress doesn’t have to be linear, but it is easier to get on board when it is.

...which means it is not worth much, right?

Back in the early 90s I used to buy fantasy football magazines which were printed in March or April. Imagine drafting in late August based upon 4 month old info. Anyways this article probably falls into the same category.

Fun to speculate or discuss but probably already out dated.

We should edit it and send it back to publisher. That would be fun.

This should be his year to show off. Bigger, stronger, faster more knowledge of the game and plenty of experience.

Are you thinking he beats out Bowers or that maybe there is a platoon system?

RE: 2019 Offense
This is about the 2019 Huskies, not just the offense.

Phil Steele Recognizes 10 Huskies on Preseason All-MAC Teams. https://niuhuskies.com/news/2019/6/13/fo...teams.aspx

In the few write-ups about the 2019 Huskies I have not seen anything about Bowers, and certainly would not expect it with something like this; all about the returning starter Childers (not named as a preseason All-MAC). I suspect we will not see much (if anything) unless Bowers is named the starter. I wonder if Hammock will be the type to play these things close to the vest and keep opposing teams guessing? It would be a real curve call for Bowers to trot out as the starter against ISU with no warning!
