Tuition free college has drawbacks
https://quillette.com/2019/05/22/free-un...m-germany/

"...American university tuition is too high, and reform is necessary. But reformers should pause before endorsing an absolute ban on tuition. It is unlikely to broaden opportunity as much as they think, and it triggers a host of unintended consequences that will only become evident after the system is in place."

Author discusses the experience in Germany where 95% go to free public universities.

Good article. However how it would work in the USA is that tuition won't be free, X University just invoices the federal government for the cost. If the Feds stopped backing loans or if loans were hard to get. Demand would plummet and so would tuition.

RE: Tuition free college has drawbacks
I don't think comparing German universities to American ones is a valid comparison. First of all, there are 10 times as many universities in America compared to Germany (even though Germany's population is about 1/5 of that of the United States). So there is way more competition in the States. Maybe some lesser schools suffer if tuition is free, but only the ones that are probably struggling to begin with.

Secondly, There are many, many schools in America whose deep endowments will continue to let those universities thrive, regardless of tuition costs. And even some schools who don't have massive endowments would continue to get huge financial boosts from athletic programs that could help fund general costs for a university.

If something is free what is it worth?

An undergrad degree will be near worthless. Just as a high school education is now. A grad degree will be required to stand out even more than now. Who’s gonna pay for that?

The advantage of charging tuition is that it introduces price pressure into education. Good universities grow, and bad universities shut their doors.

You're seeing this right now with the numerous struggling liberal arts colleges. 107 universities have closed since 2016 (note - that link also includes about 50 schools that merged, but I'm not counting them). About half were for-profit, but the rest were nonprofits.

That is too bad those 107 closed. David St. had several of them ticketed to rise up the ranks to D1 status.

Hah!

What's great is that in the same time period, 95 new universities have opened (according to IPEDS). 10 public, 51 nonprofit private, and 34 for-profit.

So it's an incredibly active marketplace! Some of these were the result of mergers, but that's sort of the point. The control mechanisms are working and allowing for a lot of creative destruction. This creative destruction is an amazing source of strength over our international competitors.
