The third member of that great two time NCAA Championship W&M tennis team was the the marvelous Bernard Bartzen. What a team...Bartzen, Kovaleski and Larned on one team!. The team won 86 matches in a row playing the best in the nation.

Lou Holtz for anyone older than 20.

Mike Tomlin for those younger.

Darren Sharper gets disqualified because of his off field failings. But aside from Creekmer, he is probably the highest decorated football player in Tribe history. Super bowl champ. 5 time pro bowler. 7 time all pro. All-decade team for the 2000s. Still shares the NFL record for defensive touchdowns. Would have been a 1st ballot hall of famer.

What a damn shame.

Holtz had two 2-yr stops at W&M.

He won one NC as a college coach and went 3-10 in one season as a NFL coach.

He, IMO, doesn't qualify as top 100 in W&M sports history.

McCormack was a visionary and was in the right place at the right time. He was fortunate to see things like free agency, proliferation of sports on TV, and the onset of brand management attached to athletes. He leveraged all of them. You can see the golden bear, umbrella, and black knight and know which golfer they go with (Nicklaus, Palmer, Player). It paved the way for brands like Jordan, Tiger Woods (TW), etc.

That's why we all have our own opinions.

He did take us to the Tangerine Bowl. Given the shortage of post season appearances in our major sports history, that's major.

I brought him up from the perspective of how well known he is in the sports world and often associated with W&M. He always seems to give us shout outs, both in speeches and books, and for that I like to give him some in return.

Others that deserve a mention are Jim Ryan, Steve Christie, Mark Kelso and Lynn Noremberg (her number hangs from the rafters and she is now married to Rick Barry, she also PBK and Homecoming Queen - talk about a full package).

The greatest W&M sports “figure” hasn’t happened yet ... it will be the Administration / coach / team that makes the Dance (tic).

Yes. Fumbling that punt return in the Northern Iowa playoff game really ruined his reputation.

Yep, ruined a perfectly historic comeback from being down 35-0.

Close. We were down 27-0 before we started scoring. But it was 35-35 when he fumbled.

Such an amazing range of emotions that game.

Good list but add Charlie Sidwell and Jeff Cohen.

My bad. You are correct.

Good pull on Cohen. He's the best basketball player ever in the history of the program. He just never achieved much professionally.
