B7:

Leal still pitching ... 87 pitches so far.

Beaulaurier lofts first pitch to center. F-8.

Comeaux ... 2-0 pitch flyout to right. Sigh.

Gneiting: Called strike ... wiff on off-speed pitch ... wiff on pitch in the dirt. Grrr.!!

"A very easy 7th inning for Leal." (7 pitches!)

4-3, Rice ... after 7.

Cade showing defense in T8. Two nice plays to start the inning.

T8:

Wood pitching ... Jefferies warming up.

"UTSA just showed up for the next game."
"I wonder if their 3 fans will be here, too."

Garcia: Hits 1-2 pitch up the middle ... excellent pick up and throw by Edwards to get the out at 1st.

Bates: Sharp grounder toward RF ... Diving, "Edwards eats it up." 4-3. Yay!

Netterville: 2-2 pitch lofted foul off 1st .. Gneiting reaches into the stands to snag it. Yay!!!

4-3, Rice ... heading to B8.

Still need some more runs, Rice. Get 'em now!!!!

Leal finally over 100 pitches. Andrew singles with 1 out. And gets picked off. Grrr

Cade pops up to end B8.

On to the 9th. 4-3 Owls. Why am I not confident?

B8:

"Leal is still on the mound." 94 pitches.

Trei: 1-2 pitch ... hard grounder to SS. One-bounce throw caught at first. Sigh.

Dunlap: Huge-swing wiff. Ball, low. Single ripped past the third baseman into LF. Yay!!

Edwards: 2-3 today, 2 RBIs. 1-strike ... Dunlap picked off!!! Out at 2nd. Arrrgh. "Talk about a rally killer." Foul out to first baseman. Sigh.

4-3, Rice ... after 8.

PLEASE, lets hold this opponent scoreless in the 9th inning!!!

1st hitter Ks!

Pop to Cade. 2 outs!

Announcers show an amazing lack of preparation and/or knowledge. Owls won the National Championship in 2005?

Owls win. No drama 9th!

T9:

Robinson: Call strike! Wiff on low-outside pitch. "Wood had some mustard on that one." Another wiff on a pitch farther low and outside. Yay!!

Clayton: Fouled back. Pop up ... caught by Edwards. 2 outs!

"All of a sudden, the Rice fans are getting excited. They may be able to stay another day and catch the Kansas concert." "That's what they're playing for."

Wells: 1-0 pitch popup to shallow center! Caught by Cruz!! THAT's how to close the game.

WooHOO!!!

Rice wins, 4-3.

We have LA Tech's number in the conference tournament, that's for sure.

Great job by Dalton Wood to get the save! Seemed very cool under the pressure of trying to stay alive and avoiding a 5th blown game in a row for the Owls.

Congrats to the team for holding on for this win. They deserve congratulations for persevering and winning. I know many of us had that dread in our stomach in those late innings.

I hope they can build on this the rest of the weekend.

RE: Rice vs. LaTech-- Elimination Game
I am/was trying to piece together a pitching strategy for the next few days and I'm afraid there aren't really any great options... I think I'd do something like the following:

Friday (vs. Marshall probably): Bordwine (Lewis as the primary reliever, use Greenwood here if the lead was big)
Saturday (Game 1): Parthasarathy
Saturday (Game 2): This is where it would get tricky... I'd probably go with whatever reliever had pitched least over the games before... Maybe even Lewis.
Sunday: Canterino/Kravetz

It's still doable, but actually the bigger issue than the pen (I mean we have guys for sure like Tyner, Greenwood and Schragger who are going to have to pitch some innings without giving up runs) is the hitting. The bottom line is we can't score 4 runs a game the rest of the way and expect to win.

RE: Rice vs. LaTech-- Elimination Game
If you think the Owl starting pitchers aren’t getting much run support and help from the pen, check out the Aggies. Starters take no hitters into the 7th and 8th, Wed. and Thur., respectively, and the Aggies lose both games, 2-0 and 1-0 in the 9th inning of each. Ouch. 4 runs a game not looking so bad.

Amazingly, despite going 2.1 IP today, Wood only threw 21 pitches. Consequently, he should be good to go on Saturday. I agree Parthasarathy should get the start in a potential Saturday Game 1. Bordwine pitched a heck of a game last Friday vs. Marshall. I'd actually save Gayle for a potential Game 2 on Saturday evening, and start him in it.

I just posted on the conference board that I actually think we need to root for Marshall vs. Southern Miss this afternoon.

I'd much rather only have to beat USM once rather than twice. And I don't think there is much difference between the two teams in the pitcher we'd face tomorrow.

USM up 4-0 already over Marshall in the 4th. Marshall used 5 pitchers last night against Louisiana Tech, and already is using one guy for a second time today. They really won't have much fresh pitchers by tomorrow (and since their #3 and 4 starters aren't so great to begin with - and they rely a bunch on their pen), I definitely think we want USM to win.
