RE: The SoCon on May 22 2019
Summary for UTC after all 3 Bahamas games:
Competition was not much: Commonwealth Bank (2-5) played a good Temple team tough, but was on their 3rd game in 4 days against Chattanooga, playing the Mocs 44-41 at the half, but folding at the end to lose 95-72. Commonwealth’s wins were over McNeese State (331st in Kenpom and 9-22; one of the worst teams in D1 last year) and Delaware (265th in Kenpom).
Their other opponents, IBA Elite (0-6) and Bahamas Select (0-3), didn't challenge anybody. In their final game the Mocs sat their top 6 early, depressing their stats, and played underclassmen and freshmen, boosting their stats.
You’ve got to like the Chattanooga front court. With the addition of 6-7 215 Vandy/Notre Dame transfer Matt Ryan and 6-7 200 Rs-JUCO Jr Rod Johnson (who is drawing comparisons to Chuck Ester from their fans) to 6-8 242 Arizona St Jr transfer Ramon Vila, they’re solid. 6-4 200 Sr swingman Jonathan Scott adds some good help, but they won’t have to rely on him as much as last year.
It is at guard that questions remain, mostly about the eligibility of Trey Doomes (12.7 ppg, 5.3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals) and 6-3 200 Wright St sophomore transfer Malachi Smith (8.7ppg, 6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.7 steals). Those 2 guys bring defense (3.7 steals between them), scoring, assists and steals. With David Jean-Baptiste, they form an excellent trio. Without them, the options are much less promising: limited guys like Sophomores Maurice Commander, A.J. Caldwell and Freshman Grant Ledford. They’ll probably be running swingman Jonathan Scott and maybe even Matt Ryan more at guard.
Get those two eligible and this team could contend for the top. If neither are eligible, then they’re a cut below. The Mocs say they are confident about getting Doomes, doubtful about Smith. We won't know for a while. Maryland transfer Alex Tostado, who was playing for Mexico in the Pan American games, could make a difference here once he gets aboard. All told, still lots of reasons for Moc fans to be pleased.
Ironic that Paris complained about the transfer portal, but will be featuring a team relying mostly on transfers (Ryan, Vila, Tostado and Doomes and Smith if eligible).
