Question HS Pitcher Signs with Japanese Team on Huge $7 Mil Deal
http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/26797...japan-deal

Interesting development and avenue for young players looking to make better money quicker by avoiding MLB and playing foreign ball.

Of note, if he went to the MLB draft this year he was probably looking at a signing bonus of no better than $2 million, per the article, and a significantly smaller rookie contract.

Really looks like this kid made a brilliant business decision. How does this affect the future of MLB prospects? Is the foreign market large enough to put a dent in MLB's market for top prospects?

Definitely interesting.

The next CBA needs to make it possible for players to hit free agency earlier. Having a guy on team-control for 6 years is the kind of thing that creates a work stoppage if not fixed.

Does the CBA have any control or legal rights to foreign contracts? I'm mostly ignorant on the matter.

None whatsoever, to my knowledge.

In the NBA a player can get drafted by a team who still owns the player's rights if he chooses to play overseas for a time.

I don't think that rule is in existence in the MLB. If a player gets drafted but doesn't sign, he is forfeited, and the team gets a compensatory pick in return.

I was wondering if there was a minimum amount of years in Japan before coming back, and that said age 25. I graduated college at age 22. A player who goes to college for four years will be in the minors or in his first three MLB years that pay under $1,000,000 when he turns 25. Even if a player reaches MLB at age 20, he won't be a free agent by 25. The Yankees' Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez reached 100 home runs before making seven digits in a season, which they will make next year from a contract or arbitration.

Moving to Japan is a cultural adjustment that some players would be unwilling to do to make more money. There are some things like being happy that you can't quantify and that you may not realize how important they are until you don't have them.

The way service time is done, sometimes it ends up as 7 or 8 years. One player complained that stars don't make a lot of money when they're young, and if they don't sign an extension with their team and become free agents, some teams don't want to give ten year contracts because of how old the player will be at the end of the contract, although that didn't stop Harper and Machado from getting giant contracts. Somebody said that in terms of not overpaying players, the owners are only as smart as the dumbest owner. ESPN's Buster Olney wrote that a long time ago, one owner proposed making all contracts last one year. The other owners said no. Having all contracts be one year would save owners from paying a lot to players who declined.

As a separate issue that applies to all sports in the USA, a person in the Netherlands said that not being able to pick one's professional team is a rights violation. I'm not saying it is a rights violation, but college sports and drafts are unique to the USA.

The way the US does sports is completely unique. In terms of CBA rules, they only apply to the League and the Players Union of that league. If a person is drafted by a team, they are subject to the CBA rules regarding the draft. For example, John Elway was drafted by the Baltimore Colts and even though he had no say in the setup of the system, he could not offer his services directly to another team. The only way a player has leverage is if they have another option. For Elway, that was the Yankees and MLB Baseball. For this kid, it was pitching in Japan.

At its core, the draft system is incredibly anti free market, but it is done to prevent a team like the Yankees from buying everyone of value up. Without a draft, you end up with a league like Spanish Soccer where there are maybe 2 or 3 teams that have a shot at winning.

I'm not sure how long teams get to hold the rights for a draft pick if they don't sign. I believe it is a year, but I could be wrong.

The MLB players association is the most powerful labor organization in the world. Good luck getting those changes pushed through. I wish Baseball would move to an NFL like model, but it will never happen

It's not just Spanish soccer. Some countries, most notably Germany, Italy, and France, have one club dominate. Countries like Croatia, Belarus, and Moldova who don't have their leagues watched around the world also have one dominant club. Professional clubs have youth academies that get start as young as first grade age (using our first grade age regardless of how they define school years elsewhere).

For former MLB player J.D. Drew, drafting him got his rights for one year. In 1994, he was drafted by San Francisco, and chose to attend Florida State instead. In 1997, he was drafted by Philadelphia. He refused to sign, and he played 44 games for the independent St. Paul Saints of the Northern League. In 1998, he was drafted by St. Louis, who he made his MLB debut with. Considering it takes at least six years in MLB to reach free agency, I don't think it makes sense to delay that by refusing to sign and playing in an independent league. In addition, there's no guarantee the team will call a player up to MLB as opposed to trading or releasing him. The MLB manager and players could change significantly from the date Player X gets drafted to the date he makes his MLB debut.

He didn't get the slotted bonus money after he failed a team physical,he didn't disclose the injury but by some accounts was aware that it would show up on xray. It happens more that you think but in this case he was lucky to have an option. It is a 6 year comtract which puts him 25 after it ends. Japan can be a real challenge even for veteran players so that might be a good deal and might not.

I think I missed this thread three years ago, so I was digging in. He still has two years until he hits FA, but I'm curious how it plays out.
