Opinions of AD Frazier
I’m curious on people’s opinions on Sean Frazier?

Until recently, I was a fan. Over the past year I’ve emailed him multiple times as well as copied members of his staff, and I never received a response. Further, a high profile former NCAA wrestling champ from Iowa reached out to him about the NIU wrestling job, and they didn’t acknowledge him.

It’s easy to see he only cares about football and basketball. So many of the NIU programs are bad or underperforming. I get NIU has a wrestling coach, granted he sucks, but to not even acknowledge a well regarded young coach’s email?

If you want to truly move the needle for all NIU sports you have to at least respond to the people who care about the other sports.

Terrible at responding or acknowledging the little guy. Phillips got an A in my book for this and because of it I donated the most in that time frame.

Yeah I get I’m not a high profile donor or anything. But they pay the wrestling coach, who as I mentioned is not good, $60k. For performance alone he should be relieved.

Then we have someone who is from chicagoland interested in growing the program, won a national title at iowa. Just respond. Idk, very frustrating.

In Detroit, me and a buddy greeted him. He said "hello" and glanced at our nametags. Once he saw we were just basic Red & Black donors for the Northern Fund...he quickly walked away.

Sean Frazier loves to talk and will talk sports, NIU and pretty much anything you want to talk about. Don’t give us this B.S. about how he only will talk to big donors. The guy is running a Athletic Dept with both hands tied behind his back. I seriously don’t know how we’re able to keep providing a world class experience for our athletes. They still are providing for the athletes like we are a 20-25k student enrollment when we actually are a 15k enrollment. I don’t see how we can continue to do that. I 100% support and have confidence in Frazier running our Athletic Dept!

Don't have personal knowledge about the interest in the wrestling opening, but I'm directly aware of alums who were interested or offered help with both the men's and women's soccer situations and Frazier didn't respond.
Then again, I stopped having faith in him when he #1) gave unnecessary extensions to Montgomery and Carey, #2) wasn't upfront about those extensions, #3) doesn't give a rip about anything other than football, and #4) either can't make good hires or do proper evaluations of support areas like marketing, fund-raising and media relations.

Just asking for thoughts. I love his passion for NIU football, so I’d like to see it on others

I’ve emailed 4-5 times with no response. Tony Ramos, a 20 something high rising wrestling coach reached out directly and didn’t get a response. I also went to a skybox game last year with 15 or so people, Frazier didn’t talk to anyone.

These are the experiences I’ve had, and been given direct information from Tony Ramos about his interest. Wrestling could see a huge surge with a small investment. I won’t criticize Frazier for his work on football, but for others, it’s not there. It doesn’t take much to respond to emails from interested parties, even if you dismiss them.

Technically, there’s not an opening. NIU wrestling is just bad, and it has one of the least qualified D1 coaches out there. Former Iowa national champ and Glenbard North alum, reached out to see if they would look for a new coach that he was interested. No response to his email.

Coach Ludwig makes like $60k/year so it shouldn’t be a resource thing on him still being the program leader. I get they are strapped, but that’s a small sum. His employer just didn’t give a sh*t about wrestling.

Ive had the same experience. Not a big donor but will talk to me about sports and other things if he’s not otherwise tied up. I hope people understand that he doesn’t have enough time to talk to all of us for 20+ minutes at a time. Not sure what’s up with the emails from supporters that aren’t being responded to. However, I don’t think it’s appropriate to shop for a new coach via email while one is still under contract.

I understand he can’t talk to everyone. That doesn’t particularly bother me, just my personal experience. Not responding to emails bothers me.

Maybe the shopping for a coach while one is under contract isn’t the best move. However, I do think we should be able to voice frustrations about programs. Especially, the overlooked programs. Also, I think the situation where I said a coach showed interest, it could force the hand and show they can upgrade that position.

I said it earlier, and I’ll stick to it. If he brings the passion he shows for football to other sports, I would love it. He does a lot of good, but some of the things I think he does poorly, could be a nice improvement.

I don't think answering an email = shopping for a coach. I bet every AD has a network with possible candidates in case a coaching position opens up for whatever reason.

I would agree that it sounds like some of you are nitpicking. One thing I have noticed though is that he may be too loyal to some of his hires. Let’s face it, we would not have looked at Hammock if Carey wasn’t job shopping. It just happened to be the perfect storm. Also if a coach wants to get in with Frazier I would recommend them to make a face to face introduction of themselves. Email is probably managed by an employee, and some emails are not getting to him on purpose. I can’t imagine what his NIU inbox looks like on a day to day basis. With donors, alumni and unhappy people. Let the guy breathe. He will get to it when it’s important to him. Right now we’re not coach shopping. We don’t have that kind of money. He put Hammock in charge of generating fund for the football program which Hammock is doing well at by the way.

He’s effective. He just isn’t always genuine. Jim Phillips wasn’t either but he brought the comedic value of calling everything “world class”. Cary Groth was effective and genuine.

My point was more that emails can come back to burn you. I bet this board would crucify him if an email conversion leaked about hiring a new coach while already having someone in place. I really think he can’t win with many of you. He brings in Hammock and the happiness with the AD is over before the season even starts. He’s been roasted for how other coaches are let go because it wasn’t transparent but now he’s supposed to email about a job that isn’t even open. Seems like this board is hypocritical.

I’ve never roasted him about the departures you’re referencing. I do agree, he would get roasted if he was looking to hire someone while currently employing someone else. I think that’s meh. It happens though, at your employer, at colleges, and everywhere.

My main complaint is what someone said “is important to him”. Every NIU sport should be important to him. Look, I never said he had an easy job. He doesn’t. However, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see some sports don’t get much love, and that we have underperforming coaches. I also agree funds are an issue. I don’t know his justification for keeping Ludwig, but $60k/year salary couldn’t be the main one. It just doesn’t move the needle.

Also, I get he has thousands of emails a day. That’s why I’ve always copied someone else as well in any email. That’s the beef with “important to him” There are plenty of people busier than him that respond with a simple note saying thanks and disregarding you, but they acknowledge you.

Apples and oranges. Frazier has had to deal with serious budget issues. He is operating on a shoestring budget. I think he or Hammock realize that twitter is free advertising.

For reasons I have enumerated in the past, I can't stand Frazier. IMO, the Athletics Dept. has taken a nosedive under him (including some of the staff he has hired), and that personal touch with donors and season ticketholders that used to be there is gone. As soon as he is out of town, I will feel much better about NIU athletics. He would make a great used car salesman.

2 reoccurring themes with Frazier: 1) ignores the little man. 2) has to deal with a budget crisis like none of his predecessors.

Good chance 1 and 2 are somewhat related. But from my interactions with the man he has been very gracious. When I see him at events I just walk up, introduce myself for the 10th time and he spends 5 minutes pleasantly talking NIU with me. Then he excuses himself and talks to the next person.

People have different expectations. For me, Frazier meets mine.
