RE: Opinions of AD Frazier
For what it's worth ...

Overall, I think Frazier has done a decent job, especially compensating for things not under his control. Like the game vs. Florida State. Said he wouldn't have but needed the money. Like waiting patiently for Carey to find his own way out since no money to make a change (if needed). Maybe the same situation with Montgomery. Frazier had/has to be aware of what some of the core fans were/are saying. And the ESPN/MAC tv contract? Twelve public schools signed away control to a private entity (the MAC hq is not public). Who was NIU president when that happened? And when it was amended to current? But Frazier gets the blame for drop in attendance.

My biggest beef with Frazier is the impact of his apparent only-if-I-have-to attitude toward "the little stuff." For a school/program like NIU, the little stuff is big.

Case on point: May 17, the official website posted a feature on eight being signed for women's soccer. Players listed included "Nicolette Gossage (Moneka, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central)." The town is Mokena, not Moneka. Now imagine you're Ms. Gossage's parents. You had a big plan to let the world know about the "big announcement" on the "official website." Now it's shot to hell because no simple proof reading. As of this morning, the error was still there. And there have been too many others. That website is the on-line face of NIU sports.

Amended well-known adage: "Don't sweat the small stuff ... just remember people are not stuff."

As soon as he is out of town, I will feel much better about NIU athletics. He would make a great used car salesman.

Didn't you say the same about Jiff? 03-rotfl

Get the stadium's skybox and end zone seating named/built and he's the goods in my book. Seems like he started pretty hot and is on cruise control as of late.

Jerry Kill just got naming rights for their bball arena. This should be top priority for Frazier right now IMO to get more money in the door.

I personally really like Frazier from everything I've seen/what he has done. I've never had conversations with him, but I think he has more of the mentality of a P5 school and others on here want him to be on the private small school level.

He is only one person and does really well with what he has. If he leaves, my guess we will have someone a lot worse...back to someone like Jiff.

Why don't you buy naming rights. There is very little value in the naming rights of the convo. Seriously, what company would plop down big money? What is your return on investment? 1000 of the same people coming form men's bball games. Zero bang for the buck.

naming rights extend far beyond the building. There is monument signage out front on a busy highway, plus the opportunity for signage on the interstate. as well as the potential to market the name in conjunction with a "potential" basketball team and concerts/conventions.

all that said, its all potential and a speculative practice. You only need to look at the price Guaranteed Rate paid for their naming rights on a stadium on a very busy interstate to see how much it is really about "selling" the potential to investors.

I honestly don't know how Frazier is doing, but very grateful for Coach H Hire! My God what timing, we needed a hire like this. I met Frazier at the Wyoming game, and he seemed disinterested in meeting us, my wife's words. It was a little odd. Great hire though, and I believe Coach H is going to be the catalyst for moving forward on all building plans. We have to win and fill seats first, which feels like all is coming our way. Say what you will, Frazier's hire got us way beyond excited for Huskie Football. Beat Utah

RE: Opinions of AD Frazier
In this position, you are as good as your supporting cast.

I have met him a couple times, he'll shake your hand, talk for a minute or 2 and move on. I don't expect a lengthy, in depth conversation with anyone in his position. Time is money, he has things to do on game day, people to schmooze and other obligations.

As far as the department, I think they are short handed and don't have the right people. As I have said before, I have had great experiences in years past with issues such as a ticket mix up for OSU and getting tickets at a home game straightened out. As I have found in my own experiences, seen on Linkedin and been told, most if not all of the support team moved on. Within the last couple years I have found it to be jumping through hoops to even get someone at the ticket office. I also sent an email to HAF to renew my small yearly donation as I sat a year out and I go no response when I asked for the HAF material. In this case, I see this as incompetent.

Again, I am not and wasn't a big donor, only used a friends season tix or bought individual games. I thought years ago on my 1st, 2nd years donation to have a meet and greet with food after the Spring game was awesome. 1st year was free bar, then it was cash I think which was still fine. Then they wanted more to attend. Again, fine but seeing they only had 150-200 in attendance I don't see what the issue was.

As for his plans, ideas, I think the scheduling of P5 is great, other than this years dismal home schedule. I think the all out stadium/campus renovation was a disaster from the onset. A pipe dream, like the B12 talk. It should have been a small steps and all out ticket drive to get people into the seats the following season. That could have lead to an west side renovation as well as end zone for a small fraction of the cost. Somehow, stands weren't filled, almost as if AD and fan expectations of anything less than a NYD bowl was unacceptable. It was impossible for the team to meet expectations it seemed but getting next to nothing done in improvements since then and attendance falling (please, don't anyone start with budget, falling attendance) is what we got in the end.

The renovation plan started when the student body was 21k. It’s barely 15k now. That unforeseen drop stymied any hopes for improvements. Whether there should have been a different approach to building fan support is always up for debate. But Frazier, as always, thinks big. Strike while it’s hot and give the fans another reason to come out....a nice venue.

Great in theory. Didn’t work. But if you truly want to be some kind of “next Boise”, I think you need big ideas like his. That just don’t always work.

To me, his plan was to be the next Louisville, Rutgers, Texas Tech or Utah. Everyone was looking at 5 power conferences with 16 teams and such. And everyone had "lists." And as we know, Boise made the jump to D1 in 90's, they didn't go P5 with a 37K stadium. It "appeared" NIUs destiny was P5 or nothing, not a Boise St. joining a conference like AAC. Whether other conferences had us on the radar, guessing yes but probably nothing serious.

I don't want to get into the drop in enrollment other than city of DeKalb, state of Illinois, NIU itself are all responsible for the fall of NIU and the campus itself. But I don't see how that relates completely into inability to captivate existing and recruiting new fans after the Orange Bowl. They failed...period.

I dont think he was serious about becoming a bigger program. If he was , he really moved the goal posts fast from being the next Louisville to becoming the next Illinois State

So to Frazier’s credit, he finally responded. Basically what I expected if I ever did get a response, of disregarding me. But he responded, so kudos.

My biggest issue was his interest in other sports. I still stand by that even as he is handcuffed by budget restraints.

I do not get to attend a lot of events, so it’s unlikely to get a forum to vent and talk other sports, that’s part of the reason I think his email response was important. So we will see how he moves forward with his passion for non-revenue sports.

Edit: In his email, which weird enough was a separate email, not a reply. He said if I want to discuss further to call him. Not sure what to make of that. Has anyone ever done that here?

As someone who lives out of town, that was sort of the impetus of this thread. I was frustrated to not even get a response. So like I said, kudos to him to finally respond.

When you live further away it’s hard to have those interactions, and from afar you want NIU to do well. Football wise, he does a fantastic job, but it’s not NIU’s only sport. I’d love to ask about rationale behind keeping underperforming coaches. If it’s money, that’s fine, just say it. I understand you can’t torpedo a coach, but you can say, hey we aren’t getting the results we’d like.

Monty is a situation where money is a huge reason they haven’t moved on. I don’t think that’s the case for wrestling, I think Frazier just doesn’t pay attention. I don’t know what Eric Luzzi was making but that was during budget problems and he was let go from the soccer position.

If someone does go to the caravan, they should ask about strategy of growing non-revenue sports and pursuing top tier coaches.

I am sure he has collected bids and the bids have been too small. Who do you think will give a million dollars a year for naming rights? How do you justify that expenditure and determine that you will get value for that investment. If it is someone who considers that a donation, maybe. I bet we have not had one bid that has been above $200k. just not a good return on investment.

Not with Frazier. But call him while it's still fresh in his mind. His email is your invite. I cannot imagine any manager willing to discuss specific personnel in a forum like the caravan.

Apologies for late response. Short business trip. Anyway, my personal favorite for best comment on this thread, which seems to have quickly devolved into the usual blame-Frazier-for-everything-including-recent-bad-weather. Me too, sometimes. Hard to resist because it's so easy. Too easy.

On naming rights, it's always going to be a buyers' market. But maybe something to ask at the caravan.

On the side, I would be curious about factors in Credit Union 1 buying naming rights to the UIC Pavilion for $9.5 million over 15 years, including a $750,000 contribution to the UIC general scholarship fund (it's now Credit Union 1 Arena). ... and, NO, I am not trying to start a UIC-vs-NIU debate. I would just like to know the various factors.

As to Convo rights, NIU has to have somethng to sell. A company can just rent a billboard if all it wants is streetside recognition.

naming rights extend far beyond the building.

Are you comparing the Dan Ryan Expressway to Lincoln Highway?
20,000 fans coming to 82 games (1.6M total attendance) per year and paying MLB pricing for food/beverage to 800 fans coming to 14 MBB games (100x fewer fans)?
White Sox TV contracts to ESPN3?

I don’t see the value, and it’s clear these “potential” investors don’t either.

I think the Sears Center really hurts NIU. A better arena in the far western suburbs much more likely to draw bigger crowds than the Convo for the same event.
