Texas Tech
I know, I know

Texas Tech won the Big 12 basketball championship and made the National Championship game.

Texas Tech baseball just won the Big 12 baseball championship taking 2 of 3 vs TCU. 3rd conference championship in the last 4 years.

Icing on the cake, it appears Texas will have another Vet School. We had a hard fight with a school down south but the state of Texas wins with more options for Vet students.

Always a great day to be a Red Raider alum but this has been an extra special weekend.

That's awesome. One of my best friends growing up wwnted to be a veterinarian. The dude would volunteer at a clinic when we were in high school and worked his ass off. Went to Tarleton and tried to get into the A&M vet school. I can only imagine that he was rejected because he wasn't an aggie.

The school down south tried to stop this historic move and failed. They have a leader who most Texans hate. They view this school as a 2nd rate option for those that aren't smart enough. The t-shirts especially hate this historic day in Texas history and will bring up law school rankings as a reason Texas doesn't need another vet school.

The state of Texas needs and deserves a 2nd vet school. I'm glad the state of Texas agrees with me.

Has any school in the state of Texas won the Big 12 in basketball and baseball in the same year?

I read where it is easier to get into med school than into vet school (I suppose because there are fewer vet schools).
The people in the cities need doctors for their dogs and cats.
But people in the rural areas have a great need doctors for their cattle and hogs- their livelihood.

I'm happy there are more opportunities for young people with that dream.
Congratulations !

Good for Texas Tech for getting a vet school but I’m sure the OP’s intention is to troll 10th Mountain who’s an A&M/TCU fan rather than keep us informed about a decision that few people outside of Texas would care.

Oh it’s absolutely a troll by an A&M obsessed tekky.

It’s also not quite as done deal as he is claiming

They got a house committee to commit to $17m over two years. Still has to pass the Senate and signed by the Gov. And you only get that IF the HECB gives the green light. That's about two months of operations expense, and you still have to build the buildings. .

They got a walk, not a home run.

And personally, I think Texas does need a better solution for rural veterinary medicine but creating another vet school does not solve the basic issue that the demands of large animal science and life style that accompanies (living in small isolated communities, low pay and essentially being on call 24/7) are not appealing to the vast majority of vet students which is the main cause of the shortage, not a lack of facilities.

Just my 2 cents

this a common misconception the THECB is a powerless organization and this comes directly from one of the top people at the THECB

the THECB can give any recommendation they wish, but if the legislature overrides that then it is a done deal

the THECB can cay that Texas does not need any vet schools and if the legislature funds and approves 5 vet schools then the state gets 5 vet schools

the THECB can say Texas needs 10 vet schools and if the legislature gives zero funding for any of them or passes bills that say no vet schools then it is a done deal

I thought I read somewhere that Gov Abbott said that he wanted consensus from the Senate and HECB before he would sign/not veto

But you are right in general, the recommendation isn’t binding

Texas Tech actually had approval from the legislature for a vet school back in about 1987 I believe (I have seen the legislation, but too lazy to google it up), but there was no funding included and never any funding in years after that

I don't see any reason the THECB would go against it and I am not even sure they will be ask about it further if the legislature passes the funding

I'm not trolling the aggy but it was fun to see my alma mater beat TCU in all 3 major sports this academic year.

Baseball just won 2 of 3 in Lubbock.

The Vet School news should be important to everyone considering how few actually exist in Texas and the US. This along with having one of the best Athletic Departments in the country will help us if realignment happens in the future.

Texas Tech believes this is a done deal. Supposedly, the Governor has already expressed his support for the Texas Tech Vet School.

The funding is already been pledged/raised for the new buildings in Amarillo.

As a loyal citizen of the Great State of Texas, with no dog in the fight between the Aggies and the Sand Aggies, I have always believed Texas needs another vet school out west.

But maybe it should be at UTEP. 05-stirthepot

UTEP has no agriculture programs especially no animal science and they have no medical program either

they are far removed from the area of need as well

so they would be a very poor choice

If I’m not mistaken NMSU has a vet school since they’re the agricultural school of New Mexico so they cover the vet needs of Far West Texas and Southern New Mexico.

Given that Kansas almost always wins basketball and is a bottom dweller in baseball, its pretty unlikely any school has previously done that.

I wouldn't call baseball one of the 3 major sports. College fb and bb are the only 2 major college sports. In some regions of the country baseball is huge. But womens bb has a larger national appeal and a larger revenue generator. According to a list that was listed on this very board about 2 months ago, even hockey is a bigger revenue generator than baseball. I may not remember this correctly but baseball was clumped in with lacrosse and track and field, even being edged out by track and field as a revenue generator. But baseball is definitely not a third major college sport.

I know he was, but UTEP would be a poor choice

and NMSU does not have a vet school they do have an admissions agreement with WICHE program universities and I would not be surprised of they work one with the new Texas Tech school
