NCAA Softball tournament/world series
If I had to bet this early in the tournament, my money is on FSU. Their hitters are just unbelievable!

Who has the pitching to shut them down? I'm not entirely in the loop on softball so I dont have a clue!

RE: NCAA Softball tournament/world series
OU is currently #1 in the nation with a 40 game winning streak.

OU is a gymnastics and softball school. 02-13-banana Football just pays for it.

See, I told you I wasn't in the loop. Didn't realize Oklahoma had a current 40 game winning streak. Do you know the record for that? Without me looking, I'm being lazy. I did know they were #1 though.

Every single SEC team earned a bid. There's something wrong with that.

Maybe?!? Let the tournament play out and that will tell us the truth.

Except Vanderbilt. And they don't have a team.

Football $ + SEC Network $ = facilities and coaches. Throw in warm weather locations, and you have success in sports like softball.

Every one of them had winning records. And the conference SOS is off the charts strong.

Georgia beat Drake 7-4. The SEC placed 11 of its 13 entrants into the Regional Finals. That means out of 32 teams remaining the SEC has just over a 1/3rd of them. We have already placed 6 in the final 16 and Georgia is still alive for one of the last 2 spots. That's over 1/3rd too.

The two schools which are out are Arkansas, which finished ahead of Missouri, Auburn, South Carolina and Mississippi State all of which made their regional finals. And Texas A&M which finished last in the SEC.

You have a good argument for Texas A&M not being included. That's it. The Aggies finished above .500 by 1 game because they lost 2 in their regional without winning. But both games were relatively close and Houston which beat them in the first game is the unbeaten school tomorrow going up against a very good Texas team led by a 1 really stellar pitcher and the Aggies lost to her by 1 run.

So when you think that clearly 12 of the 13 schools had records sufficient to be in, RPI's sufficient to be in, and you see that likely 11 of them will be in the final 32, it's hard to say that A&M which had a much higher winning % against non conference competition should have been left out.

Now will the SEC place more than 5 into the Super Regionals? Maybe. But I think the final pool of 8 will likely only include 2, maybe 3 SEC schools, likely the same number of PAC schools, and Florida State and Oklahoma.

But as far as depth goes, without question the SEC is deepest conference.

It's the espn over-hype. SEC softball plays only 8 of the 12 conference opponents. Missing that many conference opponents in non-football sports is ridiculous. The NCAA already has a rule that teams must have a .500 record to get an at-large selection; they need to expand that rule to say that the team must have at least a .500 conference record also.

Why? So a myriad of non competitive teams can get a socialist pass? If you want in then win, and win against the best, period. All of the SEC schools played top P5 competition out of conference in the pre conference portion of the season. 32 of the top programs in the nation have gone home in this tournament already, programs who finished well ahead of others who finished .500 in their conferences. We don't need lesser teams from their conferences in the tournament.

I hardly ever watch college sports this time of year, and even I know softball is pretty much three conferences: SEC, ACC, and Big XII.

Other schools play the sport? Good for them. Three conferences pretty much own it.

The last place SEC team gets a bid? You don't find that ridiculous. Not much one can do there 01-lauramac2

How about leaving home once in a while? Case in point, Georgia. 37 home games, 15 road. They opened the season at a neutral tourney in Florida and after that they pretty much stayed home in 2019. Georgia had what, 2 true road games ooc? 1 of those was at FAU during the aforementioned tournament. And the other was Georgia Tech.

That's a bit much.

I agree. I do like seeing the BIG schools though, simply because I can relate to them being from this area.

I saw the other night in the Minneapolis regional a stat showing the 4 teams playing there and their home schedules. I was actually shocked to see Minnesota only played 11 home games due to weather. I guess it never really sank in just how much Minnesota is affected by this. This just makes me appreciate Minnesota even more with how well they do with their location. Same can be said for Michigan too.

It's a great tournament and I enjoy watching the talent Regardless of where the schools are from.

In 2017 Minnesota was 56-5. And did not host a regional. They were sent to Alabama's regional instead.

Wow, didn't know that. That sounds a bit biased I would think.

I dont ever really expect northern teams to win it all. I know Michigan played in the Championship a couple years ago and actually won it all in the early 2000's? But, that's beside the point.

I don't know about that. Three of the top six schools in the rankings are from the Pac-12 (UW at #2, UCLA at #3, Arizona at #6). From the Big 10, Minnesota is #8 and Michigan #11. I think all five power conferences are pretty good, at least this season.

Bingo. Softball was dominated by the PAC up until about 11 or 12 years ago and the PAC is still very strong at the top. Texas and Oklahoma are usually the only ones from the Big 12 to make a serious run. The SEC really jumped up in the sport with intentional investment about 20 years ago.

There are only really 2 power conferences in softball the PAC and the SEC. Then there are some power teams that makes some runs: Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Minnesota as of late. Various other Big 10 teams put together good seasons Indiana and Ohio State for instance. From the ACC it's been pretty much F.S.U. but North Carolina can have a good season now and then as well.

It's never been a sport in which all conferences had emphasis, let alone success.

Gaucho picked on Georgia's home record. Well there is a reason Southern teams (including Texas and Oklahoma teams play more home games, early season weather up North. Most Northern teams tour the South until they can play outdoors with decent weather. The second reason for it is the gate. The top women's programs in the Southeast and Southwest operate in the black and it is a revenue sport which draws well enough to keep it in the black. Most of the rest of the country runs red ink on Softball.

Sorry if that doesn't fit with the whiny cult of victimization rants that so many here love to chant.

We had 3 or 4 schools that played out West to open this season.

With Competition wrapped up the Super Regionals (Remaining 16 schools) are represented this way:
Big 12: 3 Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State
Big 10: 2 Northwestern and Minnesota
ACC: 1 Florida State
PAC: 3 U.C.L.A., Arizona, Washington
SEC: 6 Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, L.S.U., Kentucky, Ole Miss
CAA: 1 James Madison
