That would leave. Richie vs Wesley and DRob vs Brown...

First, I like Richie and mean no disrespect to him, but I went to both Saturday Scrimmages, Richie looked good in the drills but in either scrimmage he did not do anything. No TDs and only 1 or 2 catches for minimal ganes. I actually think if we played today, Richie would not be the starter. I believe coach staff has Tears, DRob, and Tucker as our starters. Also, I am willing to bet Wesley can beat him in a footrace (this from talking to guys on the team of who are the really fast ones)..
Adv Wesley.

Next, I get the fascination with DRob as he is huge, but route running and catching ability leave a lot to be desired. DJ was a go to guy, that would never let you down great hands but not a big time playmaker. I have this as a wash.

As for Freshman, there is always excitement with every new class but they go to do it before I give them credit for being the real deal.

At best, WR category should be even. But I really think, especially after watching our scrimmages (ZERO big plays from this group). We are worse.

We can agree to disagree.

It’s a “yet to be determined” for sure. And Wesley was stupid fast. That’s why I was so disappointed in him. I expected big things from him as I was always touting his 10.8 100m. I think it was that speed that got him into the big12. Not his ability to play the position.

Richie was a little sporadic in the scrimmages. But what I saw when he was good I really liked. Shiftiness.

This might all be apples to oranges with a new qb. Can’t really fairly compare the groups.
Tears may be better than you give him credit for. His playing in the MACC was awesome. The entire offense came alive for that second half.
Obviously the D played light out, but we we could had had some of that offense for the Utah game we'd have won.

2018 MACC is still one of my favorite NIU games. That and the 2011 MACC .

I think Tears could be great. But I also think he’s a prima donna. More than anyone, I think Tears is the kinda guy who may be a bit self centered. And because of that I think his effort fluctuates by his production. Just me saying this, but I think Tears checked out on Childers. There were times where he just looked so frustrated Marcus was his QB that he just hung his head. If Bowers and him really make it work, look out.

To a lessor degree I feel like maybe all the WRs May have occasionally lost effort from their lack of qb faith. Maybe even they lost faith in the entire offensive plan. That is one of the reasons I expect the WRs to improve. Optimism.

I think they just knew the previous coaching staff had no chance to put.them in position to succeed, no chance

That’s part of it. But that’s what made the missed passes so frustrating for them. The WRs knew they had limited chances. And often when they did have those chances, Childers missed them. Especially deep. They were fighting two enemies...bad play calling and a sub accurate qb. It was a double whammie. This offense was bad for Childers and Childers was bad for this offense. Both would do better apart.

Any weaknesses Childers had were multiplied by 10 times playing for that coaching staff. About as QB unfriendly and destructive as you can be. He was encouraged to overthrow receivers.

This is where you lose people. You have no proof of that. You really just need to come to grips with Childers accuracy issue. Or possibly Childers confidence issue. Marcus just flat out missed guys. Say it with me MD “Childers has no deep ball.” It’s ok. Hare didn’t have a deep ball either until later.

If you would just admit what every neutral analyst, whether it was in print or on tv, pointed out about Childers accuracy issue, people would take your comments more serious. I know you’ve completely aligned yourself with Childers. But lying about his ability just undermines that support.

I'm not saying he does or does not have a deep ball. The whole problem was, it was impossible to ascertain a QBs skills under previous coach because nothing was ever demanded out of the position other than do not turn the ball over, do not take any chances.
Any grade on any QB can only be considered incomplete. It would be like someone asking you to rate a power tool you bought at Ace hardware without even taking it out of the box yet.

I understand how Carey was conservative, but to say we don’t know what Childers is after playing two full seasons is just ridiculous. I hope he progresses, but He’s just not that accurate of a passer plain and simple. NIU still threw the ball despite the bad offensive scheme. I’m sorry Carey has absolutely nothing to do with Childers unable to make throws. Cmon. At some point it’s on the player. Stop coddling him. You have more of an argument for Carey being unable to recruit the QB position.

I wouldn't say he was encouraged to overthrow receivers but I think the excessive worry about turnovers led to exactly that result of overthrowing receivers. I think Bowers, if he threw any interceptions, would not start under Carey, and certainly a 18/ 12 ratio would get him exiled to Missouri.

On a general note I agree with previous posts on better versus worse. I do think TE will be an important strength for this year.

Are we using a full back for this year?

Tears is the main beneficiary of new coaching. He has not proven to run a route effectively. And I agree with a previous comment he has some prima donna in him. Expecting much better this year and we need production from him. He has not earn the right to be considered as good as some of receivers we have had here

He might have the prima dona factor but the guy seems to be a fierce competitor. Not trying to beat a dead horse but he played under Coach Carey. Not easy for any receiver to stand out in those circumstances

Tears is very inconsistent . Hit or Miss. Everybody focuses on the MACC but take that away and it would have been a terrible season for him. The prima dona and bad hands do not make him a dominant player.

Also, of different note. Most people grade our DB's as worse then last year and some grade our WR's better.
But our DB's shut down our WR's in both scrimmages ...so how can that be?!?!

Good enough to win us the MACC. I am not a big Childers fan. But lets not pretend he is complete garbage and put all fault on him.
I did not see wide open guys downfield that the QB missed on.

I like Childers, he competes. This year will be telling if he plays. If he is behind Bowers, then we have an outstanding back up that already won the MACC, not to shaby.
