We are a message board, and no, the AD should not waste time reading us.

But we still make up the fanbase.

IF WE ARE ANY INDICATION, then yes my point stands, idiot.

The difficulty of the AD job depends on how many Alonso's he/she have to deal with on a regular basis.

Like any program, a lot, except in a P5 program you have at least 5X the resources.

Stop ganging up on Alonso. He's a good fan. He's young. He's a good young fan.

Some day he will inherit this board-- lord willin and the creek don't rise.

You're welcome. Laughing is good.

Drugs...smoke...edibles whatevs...all those things...welp, they have never been my thing... Singers like to keep their throats, lungs and hollow facial spaces clear of residue---all residues. More oxygen. Better resonance.

lesson 1 over.

Bowen did a lot of good here and got crucified when he left.

Can you give examples of "a lot of good" that was HIS doing and would not have happened if anyone other than he were AD?

Sure, as soon as you can provide evidence that he was not responsible for anything the Memphis athletic department has accomplished since 2012.

I'd prefer a new AD with a vision to overcome the small ingrown thinking that had long been associated with UM athletics. Most of what I hear is how we can't do certain things, can't achieve, can't raise money, can't schedule. Thankfully we've made strides in the last several years in FB & major strides in MBB, in terms of team performance & recruiting, but we need an AD that can foster that, leverage it to get local business more solidly supporting the university, raise funds among those businesses and alumni, build relationships with major universities for scheduling, and build community in Memphis & the midsouth. It's hard work, not an easy job, if done right, but it can be done with the right guy.

I agree with this. Bowen was absolutely the BEST hire we could have made when we hired him, and he got our house in order when it was a total mess.
this is probably true:

We are much better off today than they day Bowen started the job.

And

We are better off today than the day before Bowen "quit" the job .

Actually hiring Jurich away from Louisville would have been the best possible hire. Double his hefty salary at the time and I think he would have made the move. Everyone knew he was doing good things at Louisville and he would have more than paid for itself here. IMO we would be in B12 now.

But when you are short on resources and with several people involved in hiring decisions, I can see how we missed that one. I would hire him now in a heartbeat

Agree. Too many people here see Bowen responsible for all that's wrong, and someone else responsible for all that's right. There's a lot more of admin/resource management/capex planning than there is scheduling football games. Even Calkins said "he did a pretty darn good job". Ready for a change, but respect the improvement he led.

As for the OP. I think the 2 biggest challenges to continue the upward trend:
make sure football continues to get the right amount of resources (don't let the pendulum swing back) for the top G5 program;
and forge a trusting relationship with Penny in which the AD can work with him and provide appropriate guidance.

Jurich and Rudd would work effectively for about 1 day. Then it would fall apart in a power struggle. (Rudd would win.) Plus, with the scrutiny that we are now going to be under as a top non-power school challenging the status quo, we can't carry Jurich's baggage.

What kind of weirdness is this? We "missed" on Jurich? We had a shot at hiring him? From 2008 to 2017 with bonuses, Jurich earned $2.75 million per year. In 2012 we hired Bowen for $400,000 while Jurich was paid $1.4 million and earned nearly $400,000 in bonuses. His bonus was more than we paid Bowen.

You really for serious think it would have made any sense to offer him $2.8 million? Vandy's AD made $3.2 million. After Jurich, the next highest paid AD's were Ohio State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Texas, and Florida, all at $1.2 million total compensation or less.

You are hilarious.
