RE: Thoughts on new Tribe Hoops recruits - Ayesa and Wight
I see both as solid role players that are going to be asked to be more than that with our current roster. Hopefully they're up to the task. It somewhat worries me that the shooter didnt make any other visits. He said "the facilities are amazing" which I just thought was funny. I wouldn't say either are great gets but will take anything at the moment.

I hope our staff doesnt too eagerly fill out our scholarship availability with underwhelming high schoolers. It's a risk that just to field a roster with all scholarship players that we commit a 4 year spot to less than ideal players. Not saying these two guys are that, but something to be wary of.

**Snarky Comment Alert**

Scholarships are renewed on an annual basis; so who’s to say our illustrious AD in all of her infinite wisdom won’t decide to rescind some scholarships if better recruits happen to come along? Remember my friends, it’s all about The Dance. Come Hell or high water, that is now the be all end all of this basketball program per our AD. I wonder, did that proclamation come with an expiration date?????

Hear, hear! Nothing good can ever happen again until Tac12 has his thirst for revenge sated! Who's to say she won't shut the basketball program down altogether? Or make them play all their games on the court outside the rec center? (Is that still there?)

RE: Thoughts on new Tribe Hoops recruits - Ayesa and Wight
I read through Ohio U's message board regarding Ben Wight. There were comments that he was not a D1 prospect, since Ohio was his only D1 offer when he committed and there had been no accolades for him last summer or after his senior year. No one had actually seen him play. Some controversy, as expected, over the new HC parting ways with him.

Ben, apparently, had mono back in the fall to start the season, suffered a foot injury that put him in a boot at the beginning of 2019, then suffered a concussion and broken collar bone during playoffs. That's a tough senior year scenario for any athlete to deal with. He will need time to develop to this level of ball.

Ohio U, subsequently, signed another 6'10 player from Michigan who had other offers, including JMU, and a higher rating. I looked at recent highlights of this kid and other than broader shoulders projecting bigger size potential, he was a project with nowhere near the skills/coordination exhibited by Wight in his footage. I would take Wight with no hesitation over the other kid, based on video. Ben has great hands, hops, great shot form, quality footwork and moves around the post, runs the court very well with surprising speed and quickness for a big. I think he actually projects well as a four.

My take was this being a classic case of a player getting less exposure, and fans relying on paper ratings and other offers to pass judgment without actually seeing players. Don't know whether Elon actually offered, but don't think Schrage would have gone to see Ben, then have him in on an official visit, unless he believed in his potential, since Elon has a big need for the post. Other than a young future D1 PG, Ben supposedly did not have a strong cast on his HS team, with little opportunity for his play/shooting on the outside.

I trust Kemp has a pretty good insight into his skill level and potential. Must be a very bitter situation for Wight's parents as Ohio alums. Believe Ben is in the classic mold of a Tribe, high character student-athlete and will contribute down the road. Think we would have been very happy to sign him a year ago when we were looking to get a late post commit and grabbed Mehkel.

Kemp was following Ayesa before joining the staff, so, he was obviously the one to get both of them here. I was very surprised when looking back through Kemp's twitter follows for the past few years, the overlap in past Tribe recruit targets, including Quinn Blair. He obviously is coming in with prime recruiting experience with the same pool we've been hunting under Shaver.

Always difficult to assess players before they get here, but am encouraged by the videos of these two fellows.

Agree with Tribeheart's very good assessment of Wight. Looking at Ayesa I like his potential very much, at least by what we see in his highlights. This kid can shoot the three point shot:
he has a terrific release and knows how to get into position. He also has quickness and athleticism.

Tribeheart -- that is some pretty impressive research! Do you write for W&M Sportsblog or the Daily Press or something?

Agree with Bubbadog that you never really know with high school recruits but - with that caveat in place - why have a fan message board if we can't speculate a little bit? My biggest question is how good of a job is the new coaching staff doing when it comes to filling the holes on our roster?

In my opinion, considering the circumstances, these recruits are pretty good finds. Nothing seems Earth-shattering about them right now, but they seem like they can contribute and not just take up scholarship spots for the sake of doing so.

I am pleased with the work the coaching staff has done here. But I am willing to listen to people who say otherwise.

And, if Ayesa loved our facilities so much.... then he really must have only visited W&M!

RE: Thoughts on new Tribe Hoops recruits - Ayesa and Wight
My feelings, having watched as much videos as Google could find on both, are that both of them should be able to score on CAA opponents, but I have more reservations on whether either will be able to play effective defense against the quickness routinely found on CAA squads.

Wight's first objective is, obviously, to put on weight, hit the weights and stay healthy. He has some hops and some range on his jumper, but the level of competition jump always decreases a person's ability to dunk and shoot the J in college games.

Ayesa definitely has a shooter's touch and could be a Burchfield type for us, but, until I can see more proof of lateral quickness, I will reserve judgement on his ability to play defense and overall.

NOW, having said that, I will qualify those statements with this one.

Coach Fischer and his staff get a complete pass on recruiting from me this season.

He was put in a terrible position, with the walls collapsing all around him, and whatever he is able to bring in, no matter how much they help next season, or down the road, is a plus. If they have any CAA level potential, at all, then this is a bonus.

Again, that is for this year, NEXT YEAR is a different scenario. That is when we start to find out if he and his staff have a plan that will bring in players of the level of Audige, Owens and Brown or if we fall back to the level of previous staffs.

Remember, it took Tony's staff quite a while to figure out how to effectively recruit those types of athletes to W&M, as well. Let's hope Julian can impart some of the plan that was used by Shaver's crew to entice the higher quality athlete to come here and keep the flow going.

I wish him all the luck in the world and welcome to the two newcomers.

Kudos again to the staff for these quality recruits in the toughest of situations!

Also welcome and congratulations to the recruits for making a life choice that has worked out well for many of us who have previously made the same decision.

Welcome to all! We're looking forward to watching your progression and cheering on your success. GO TRIBE!

+1
I think Ayesa lacks quickness and he needs to stop bringing the ball down before releasing his shot. He should practice catch and shoot about 10000 times this sumer and keep that ball high and quickly release. Otherwise a lot of his shots will end up in the bleachers.

this is good... and these guys were needed. Hopefully we can bring in 1-2 more, especially if they are transfers.

If not, at least we have these two and we can push forward with 2020.

TDenver - I just went back and read the article again, and I think you're right. That quote seems to be about the school as a whole - not the "state of the art" accoutrements of Kaplan Arena. Of course, though, the fact that the academics at W&M may be the primary focus for him just make me like him more.
