I think there is definitely a chance. He talked a lot in high school about the possibility of playing both sports, and he was certainly a good enough recruit out of high school to play Division I basketball. It would be a unique opportunity for him, getting to play one year of basketball during his red shirt season. I would rather pocket a scholarship and have Smith on the roster as a depth guy than reach for a recruit late in the game that may never pan out.

He can immediately play basketball, but would have to sit out a year in football? Seems hard to believe....

Two different sports. When it comes to the NCAA your eligibility is per sport not a total sum. There were a couple times where guys would finish their basketball or football season/eligibility and then come try to do high jump, sprints, or things like that on the track team.
Darnell Wilkes was one I remember coming to practice for a few days to see if he could do high jump.

Since he never started his eligibility for BBall it should be totally separate from his Football eligibility.
