Well, JK did say Tuesday in Austin in response to a direct question that 'wait for an announcement Thursday'.
Very pleased that this extension happened.

This is great news! Finding and keeping top coaching talent is integral to having success. Coach Langley has proven that she can build a program and recruit top players; she deserves whatever it is she is earning on this new contract.

This is very good news. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see her honor the entire contract.

I hope she doesn't have to because her success allows her to negotiate another better one from Rice before this one's done.

I would hope that she stays the 5 years plus more. Brookes, thanks for bolding that. Since exercising a buyout provision actually *is* honoring the contract (it is part of the contract) I would hate to see her honor the contract through exercising a buyout for another pasture.
My OCD kicked up when I first read that, but I know what we all wish for: both a great amount of continued success for the *with* the Rice Women's Basketball program and a corresponding and dovetailed level of success for Coach Langley *with* the Rice Women's Basketball program.

Bull : Red Cape : bull is to (what) : Red Flashing Emergency Vehicle Light?
And sorry I had a long phone call this morning about just that issue -- my client had exercised an 'escape hatch' from a contract and I had the discussion with the opposite party who ranted and vented about 'honoring the contract' --- all the while seeming oblivious that the 'escape hatch' *was* part of the contract.....

RE: Tina Langley Signed to New 5-Year Contract
I've said before, I'm not a big believer in huge buyout clauses, either way. My experience in the private sector was that if someone wanted to be somewhere else, we were better off without them. And quite frankly, if Tina has a couple more years that build on what she did this year, the big boys aren't going to have heartbreak over a buyout clause. Also, if that happens, our program will be in much better shape to attract quality candidates than it was when she took the job.

RE: Tina Langley Signed to New 5-Year Contract
First, outstanding news and great job by JK and team.
To me the purpose of a buyout at our level isn't to keep a great coach from leaving. As noted, there really isn't enough money to stop 'the big boys' from hiring any of our coaches if that's what they want.
The purposes should be some combination of:
a) allow us to buy out someone else
b) give their young assistant/replacement extra resources up front to continue the success
c) buy out their replacement quickly if they start to fail before the ship has completely sailed.
One of the reported reasons Bailiff struggled after the extension was that he partially funded some of the assistants upfront in order to win... hoping for the payday either internal or external... when that didn't come but an extension did, he took the money and there wasn't a similar 'more' for the assistants. I don't know if this actually happened and really don't want to get into rumors, or if it was merely how many have done before.... but either way, it's something we should be prepared for.
