Yeah Alcade, see below, Wilbon was just awful to Penny. You guys who look for the negative all the time are exhausting.
So he said what he said in that segment. So what. In 1993 or 94 he said Penny wasn't dominant in college and he didn't think much of him, and was surprised by his success as a rookie.

RE: ESPN2 PTI Big Penny segment SOON *******
I didn't like the criticism of Penny's first season record without any context. No mention of his success as a high school coach or on the AAU circuit, just the 21-13 record, and the comment Penny was going to have to do better than that.
Calipari was 21-15 his first season with the Memphis Tigers.
Roy Williams was 19-11 his first season with North Carolina.
Mike Krzyzewski was 17-13 in his first season at Duke.
These were experienced coaches who just needed time to recruit the right talent. What is so incredible about Coach Penny is how quickly he has recruited incredible talent. So what he used all his connections to make it happen. He would have been a fool not to, and it doesn't mean he is not going to be able to continue to recruit at a high level for Memphis.
His first season won loss record is not relevant to where he is going to take the team.
And for all the haters fans from the blue blood schools criticizing recruits choosing Memphis because of the conference we are in, the Tigers pulled off a #1 national ranking and a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament while playing in CUSA. Playing in the AAC is not going to hold us back.
The blue bloods don't hold the keys to the kingdom if Virginia and Texas Tech can play for the title. The door is open. And it isn't like we haven't been to the party before.

so he had an opinion that turned out to be incorrect. He's human.

How many of our games were nationally televised in 1993
