You do understand that it's Fox who is requiring these noon kickoffs and not ESPN.

ESPN puts more games at noon ET every Saturday, between ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, some weeks there's a game on all four channels at that time -- just not the games involving the most popular teams.

I guess sportswriters want to write about it when Ohio State or Oklahoma play an early game, but not when Northwestern or K-State do the same.

Right. But fans are starting to complain from what it sounds like from the article about Big games getting the noon treatment and not liking it at all....

The reason it's a story at all is because all of us recognize that noon is NOT a coveted time slot, and many people question Fox's decision to put there best games at noon.

Granted, this is kind of reversed from how I wanted it though. I would have preferred biggest games later and most other games earlier.

Will be interesting to see if this changes around the Big Ten scheduling. It has put a lot of games on at noon to avoid national TV ones later in day (although got past exclusive games some years back). Think this might push some Big Ten less viewed games later in the day.

From the FOX angle, I think it makes sense. For right now, you are going to struggle to beat ESPN/ABC/CBS unless your game is much, much bigger. Instead, take the slightly less desirable time slot, but dominate it. The more people become used to going to FOX for earlier game, the more they'll tend to stay for other ones and associate FOX with college football.

Its math. If game A adds XXX viewers over game B at noon but only XX viewers over game B at 7:30, you air game A at noon.

Go to any OU board and read the complaints. It's one of the primary complaints our fans have about the Big 12. Last season's first two home games were played at 11 am and 12 pm, respectively. Weather in Oklahoma is never perfect, but an 11 am kickoff in September is brutal. But, Fox pays the Big 12 big bucks, so kickoffs are often at 11 am. It is what it is. Every conference has them (except the Pac-12, as long as they stay in their time zones).

11 am (12 Eastern) was once where non-marquee matchups were dumped. As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, Fox is finding that they can get better ratings with a good matchup at noon Eastern than by going against ABC/ESPN at night or against the CBS SEC game.

No doubt. It always boggles my mind when the Michigan/Ohio State fans actually *demand* the early time slot because it's definitely not a positive at all for Central Time Zone teams. I couldn't stand those 11 am kickoffs when I was a student (when I rarely functional at that hour after being out on Friday night) and they're not any better now as an adult. That difference between a 12 pm start and an 11 am start feels monumental. I feel perfectly fine watching NFL games that start at 12 pm Central Time on Sunday, but those 11 am Central Time games for college football feel insanely early.

I'm glad someone else noticed the difference between a 12:00 kickoff and a 11 am kickoff. 11 am is brutal when attending a game in person, and even worse if driving more than an hour to a game. It's not optimal for watching on TV, but it's doable. The Central time zone is the only one that has a large number of games at 11 am local time. There are a handful of games in the Pac and MWC at 11 am or 11:30 am local time, but not nearly as many as are played in the B12, B1G, and SEC.

11 am kickoffs aren't going away, but the paying fans hate them.

FWIW, I live in the Central time zone and absolutely LOVE the 11 AM kickoffs on my TV. My attitude is I want to see the games as soon as possible.

IMO, the Central time zone is easily the best for watching college and the NFL. Not too early, not too late, just right.

I’m with you. I LOVE 11am games and LOVE the central time zone. It feels so refreshing driving then walking to a game on a fall morning. It breaks CFB Saturdays cleanly into 4 parts of the day: morning (11am), afternoon (230/3), evening (6/630/7), and night (9/930). It also has the added effect of afternoon games ending at sunset.

You've got to get up too early and there's little time to tailgate. Afternoon games are best. And noon is much better than 11 am.

I’ve loved 11am kickoffs since I was a kid. Don’t have to wait an agonizing hour. Full day extravaganza of CFB.

11am kickoffs have existed forever(?). Not sure why fan bases are melting down over them today.

Yes, I moved to the central time zone 24 years ago and instantly realized it was better than the eastern time zone. NFL kicks off at Noon instead of 1 PM, and college football kicks off at 11 AM, making it easy to watch 12+ hours, no waiting up to 2 AM for the last PAC game to end.

Tailgaters may complain but so what, LOL? Just get yer arses up early!

it'll be interesting to see if this year is a fluke with the schedule. Will say even with all the games- not many of the games have really rated that well....

Thus far in 2021, Big Noon holds an average television rating of 2.92, tied with ABC’s primetime college football broadcasts. CBS in the afternoon has averaged 2.66.

As a result, Big Noon Saturday could finish the season as the top-rated college football window across all networks, despite airing in a busy time slot that is still morning for half of the country.

And it's ESPN who has the preponderance of these schools: for the noon and 3pm time slots, Fox can pick from half of the Big 10 and half of the Big 12, where this applies to none of the Big 10, and half of the Big12.

I think Noon is the best and primetime is the worst for CFB. Primetime is for pro sports.

Excellent decision thus far for Fox, despite apprehension or criticism by some.

Its smart too because it help bring that audience into the next game which usually has the next tier of those conferences or a good Pac game.

Maybe, but I love kicking off a college game day with a big noon game, so kudos to FOX.

Better for us viewers to not have to choose between big games on at the same time too.

Will be interesting to see if this changes the ESPN/ABC thinking about having the SEC earlier than originally scheduled. think it really could.

One other thing- Fox Big Noon has only 2 games on the top 10. Had 2 huge numbers for Michigan/Michigan St and Ohio St/Oregon. The other games are only averaging 4.24 million per game. Think they only have 1 big game left- Ohio St/Michigan (I think ESPN will have Michigan/Penn St next week and then Michigan St/Ohio St the following week.)

RE: FOX will air their best game at noon every week
I mentioned this in the Man Cave thread this week.

For the first time this season, FOX is airing a prime time Big Ten game, Indiana at Michigan. They are also starting the game at 7:30pm ET instead of the usual start time of 8pm ET. ABC's Saturday Night Football starts at 7:30pm. This week on ABC is Oregon at Washington, the Pac-12. By the Pac-12's contract, at least one game per year must air in prime time on the East Coast. ABC decided to bite the bullet this week. I don't think it's a coincidence that FOX is airing the Big Ten this week and moving the game time up to start at the same time as SNF. They think they can beat SNF this week. FOX aired Penn State-Iowa at 4pm ET instead of as a Big Nooner and it beat Georgia-Auburn on CBS in the ratings. The noon strategy was mainly to avoid the SEC on CBS and SNF on ABC. But if FOX knows it can beat these games head to head, why not go after them? You don't go after a mega game but sure if the Pac 12 is the SNF or if the SEC game doesn't have Alabama or another headliner, go for it. Also, I think the Big Nooner is still a good concept. I think Ohio State-Nebraska is still FOX's headliner game and getting the "Big Noon" treatment this week, Indiana-Michigan is their "#2" Big Ten game. We'll see how it goes.

Plus you can still run errands in the morning before the 11AM kickoff. You can't do this on the west coast.

That seems like a strange matchup to go up against Oregon at Washington. Michigan is at home, they are favored by 20 points. Indiana did beat Michigan last year, but that was the first time since 1987. Michigan is 59-10 against Indiana. Oregon vs UW is a rivalry game. They have been playing each other since 1900 and this is the 113th meeting. Oregon is a seven point favorite. There's no love lost between the Ducks and the Huskies and as you pointed out in another thread, the UW head coach has already started the trash talking, inadvertently.

I do find the information you provide on TV games helpful and interesting. I think ABC will have another Pac-12 game or two before the end of the season, maybe in primetime. I looked it up and found that these were the 2019 ABC games:
Oregon at Washington, 3:30 EST, ABC
Oregon at Arizona State, 7:30 EST, ABC
USC at Arizona State, 3:30 EST, ABC
UCLA at USC, 3:30 EST, ABC
Colorado at Utah, 7:30 EST, ABC
Oregon vs, Auburn, 7:30 EST, ABC (Arlington, Texas)

The Pac-12 has more games on Fox than ABC, and I guess that is because ABC has such a huge inventory of games.
