I think in all of this it really exposes something about Mick and that is he really wasn’t very likable. And I think that was directly seen in his inability to recruit. Recruiting is salesmanship and good salesman are likable and good talkers and Mick was none of that and I think that’s why he couldn’t get the kids he wanted and that forced his hand into getting projects and playing defensive basketball. I think he was his own worst enemy in that area.

Agree completely with all of this.

He should have taken media training (and he really should now that he's in LA). He turned fans off with his defensiveness, and once you lose someone it's impossible to get the benefit of the doubt back. It was a self-inflicted wound that never healed. I think positing it as a cause for his recruiting problems is probably a bridge too far though.

I agree, I think had Cronin done exactly what he did record and recruiting wise, but with a different personality he could have been much more liked. I actually liked his personality for the most part and maybe that's why I wasn't done with him. He seemed personable in the more behind the scenes interviews (pregames and radio shows), but when it came to the post-game media interviews he needed some training. But I don't think it had any effect on recruiting, look at his players and lack of transfers, he was clearly loved by his players.

Uh, maybe just a little objectivity is in order here.

Gary Clark, Jacob Evans, Lance Stevenson, Troy Caupain and Jarron Cumberland are all not slouches.

He also had Trey Burke until Michigan undercut us at the very last minute.

I always thought the rap on him was is inability to win the big games and advance in the tournament. I never blamed him for his inability to land Zion Williamson.

I am sorry but recruiting was a huge issue. Coach went on during a media session last year that he disliked grad transfers.

Only one team earned a protected seed, that’s a talent problem.

He two really talented two year runs 2011/2012 and 2017/2018. Cronin didn’t recruit well enough to become a top 15 program.

Oh, OK. I must have misinterpreted all the bitching and moaning through the years about how we always lost to lower seeded teams with less talent than us in March.

I'm not sure that's exactly a bragging point when it's spread over 13 years.

That was one of the dumbest comments I've ever heard a coach make TBH. There isn't a coach out there (outside of Cronin) who wouldn't welcome a quality grad transfer to fill a weakness or provide depth if you have the room. Instead we didn't even look into the possibility of upgrading our roster and happily pocketed a couple of scholarships. SMH

LOL This. Recruiting was a huge issue. It's been 3 years since they landed a legit Top 100 type talent.

He gets his lack of likeability naturally from Hep who in HS was a arrogant (but not very bright) pr-ck.

The Cronin Clan exposed.

OK, whatever. The mob mentality is showing up again, so I can't win.

The guy couldn't recruit superior talent... which always led to us losing in the tournament... with superior talent.

Y'all are just like the Hickory town folk in "Hoosiers"

Not at all. The recruiting rankings speak for themselves. However, the Ncaa tourney issue i firmly believe is unrelated. He had the talent to win more games, but his style of play and frankly coaching often got in the way. He was severely out coached down the stretch against Nevada, and frankly his inability to put his team in a position to attack an under athletic team's press this year were reasons he did not advance. He had the guys to do it. It wasn't that he didn't develop guys, he did. He just did not put them in a position to win because of overly conservative choices. You have to as a coach develop a little more option wise that time of year than to win with defense.

The problem was for each one of those guys, Mick would bring in 2-3 "projects" that wouldn't be able to even contribute until on campus for a few years. That's far from ideal.

I remember Jim Boeheim saying he didn't like taking transfers period. Fans tend to get into a fantasy football mindset of thinking coaches can just plug in a talented player. But all these coaches talk about "culture" nonstop. Chemistry is super important to them. It's not an entirely unfounded concern. And, in any event, Cronin did appear to go after some grad transfers despite his statement.

Cronin papered over some recruiting misses by getting Washington and then Broome. I thought that was a bad harbinger about his high school recruits, but it was actually a smart way to raise the talent level of the team while still holding to his philosophy about putting in work and understanding the program and such. I think he tried to get some guys the last couple years but didn't land them, for whatever reason.

Anyway, we could REALLY use a grad transfer or two this year. It seems like the best way to ensure that next year's team has enough pieces while also not handcuffing the program with a 4 year guy who's a reach but is the best of the high schoolers still out there.

I don't care much about anything else...but for the love of God can we stop using "almost gots" has a way to place a feather in someone's recruiting cap? It's the dumbest non-argument I've ever seen used to justify anything...in a sales business you can't go to you boss and say "Well, I almost got the $2M contract sir, but a bigger company came in last minute, that still means I'm a good salesman."

The "almost got's" are hilarious and a sure sign of grasping for straws to defend something indefensible. These Cronin shills are still in full force I see. Gotta love it, even after this article.

If you will go back and read my initial post in this thread sir, you will see that I too am glad that he's gone. While I generally thought he did a good job here, I too got tired of losing to lesser teams in the NCAA tournament.

However, what I don't like is revisionist historians who come on here as the smartest people in the room and all just pat themselves on the back now that the guy they hated is gone.

Trey Burke was a COMMIT to UC... until he wasn't. That's what 18 year old kids do. They like what they have until something shinier comes along and then they want that.

If this Evan Prater guy from Wyoming decides at the last minute that Notre Dame is a little cooler than UC, is Fickell then an idiot that can't recruit?

A guy who makes 9 straight NCAA's must know something about recruiting no matter what conference you come from.

… but not if you don't say so.

I'm a defender of Mick's recruiting and think his ability to identify talent was undervalued around here, BUT Fickell is not being judged by the guys he doesn't get, but the guys he has brought here. Prater changing at the last second wouldn't make Fickell and idiot that can't recruit because we've already seen him bring in real guys and recruit at a level that we weren't even recruiting at in the Big East.
