What the literal F was the point of this?


Long Beach’s mascot was iconic.

It would have been cool if they had extended Dirtbags to their entire athletic department.

With that said, they could do a lot worse than Sharks.

Per a statement from the school president in the story:

Quote:“The Prospector Pete image grew from our founding in 1949 and reflected our Founding President Pete Peterson’s common references to having struck the gold of education by establishing Long Beach State College,” Conoley said, noting the term “49er” will remain an informal nickname and an identifier for alumni, students and supporters, as well as the name of the student newspaper. “But we’ve come to know the 1849 California gold rush was a time in history when the indigenous peoples of California endured subjugation, violence and threats of genocide.”

It's weird that they will strike it from formal use for that reason but not try to quash it informally. Seems like a half-pregnant solution. Either it's offensive and get rid of it completely, or it's not.

But will they run afoul of Greg Norman?

You’re trying to satisfy people who can only have the power and fulfillment they crave by being offended and these dedicated folks can be offended by ANYTHING. No college mascot will be safe in the long run unless they become the Fightin’ Vote Democrat!’s nothing else will be safe
