Now they can borrow their mascot outfit from Katy Perry.

But... "Sharks" has gang implications. In fact the "Sharks" were a Puerto Rican gang and thus it is a racially biased term and I am reasonably sure the fine folks at LBSU wouldn't want to perpetuate such a vile stereotype. Maybe they can be the Battling... err, the Coexisting Good Willers. ...although "Will" is a male name and we couldn't imply support of the Patriarchy. Golly, establishing an identity that offends no one, real or imagined, is tough sledding (which likely insults Santa and implies a western Christian perspective and commercialism which is offensive to just about everyone). Shoot... I mean darn (with apologies to those who have socks with disabilities).

I'm sure sharks have killed more people than prospector pete. They shoulda used the SF 49ers excuse, like the time in the 90s SF had the LBSU helmet logo for 1 day, which was the symbol of futility.

We're going to go with a more accurate description of mining that will identify us to the PC crowd with ease:

You’re trying to satisfy people who can only have the power and fulfillment they crave by being offended and these dedicated folks can be offended by ANYTHING. No college mascot will be safe in the long run unless they become the Fightin’ Vote Democrat!’s nothing else will be safe

This is definitely a jump the shark moment.

Without the 49ers, California is Mississippi, a poor backwater.

Umm, it's still on the coast with great weather. It wouldn't be as big but it'd be more like a Midwest state than a Texas (or NYC plus New Jersey and Nevada).

The Indian Removal Act of 1830 and Manifest Destiny were.
The school was founded in 1949, thus there's really zero connection to the miner in the northern part of the state.

LBSU missed its chance - they could have been a Cobra (or a Panther).

LOL. Well done (no offense to anyone who considers fully cooked beef objectionable).

Guarantee the students who drove this nonsense won’t even follow the school after graduating. This president must be Chuck Staben’s long lost sister.

No issue. It fits California and you honor the best basketball coach you ever had (Jerry Tarkanian).
