Surprising.

Hadn't seen any stories linking him to this job.

Huge blow for Wolverine basketball.

We're only supposed to be making up fake REALIGNMENT news. Not fake college basketball news. 04-cheers

I say that as a joke. I heard this breaking news on Clay Travis' radio show at 6:45 AM MT and I was absolutely stunned. Darn near drove off the road. But it is 100% completely true.

Five Sweet 16s or better in the last seven years, including two seconds.

Those kind of coaches don't grow on trees.

My guess is that Michigan's good run is over. He could have made Michigan a blue-blood in another 12 or 15 years before he retires.

Shocking move. He's 66, and not considered a whiz kid like Brad Stevens. John Beilein has only been a college coach. This makes no sense for Cleveland to do this, especially a 5 year contract -- although at the pro level they just eat a few million is they dump a coach early (he wont get another gig after failing in Cleveland and being close to 70, so Gilbert will have to pay for his retirement in a couple years). The money is probably not terribly different than Michigan, and this gig is set up to fail, and fail within a year or so (reminds me of the Warriors hiring Mike Montgomery years ago).

I am seriously wondering if something really bad is going to come out about Michigan's program in the next year or so, making him decide to get out with a little parachute.

The one coach I really expect the NBA to come after is Tony Bennett, who has proven ability to win with underwhelming talent, and has been on the USA National U19 coaching staff since 2013. He has NBA written all over him.
