He's looking to advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Arkansas. The low five teams from the Austin regional and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals (which BTW I don't think is representative of other NCAA sports - golf at the collegiate level seems to have a much bigger emphasis on team competition than individual success but I digress). He’s even through 4 holes which puts him middle of the pack.

Going to be tough to get that one spot outside the top five teams but he's certainly holding his own so far.

A double-bogey, bogey, bogey run on holes 8-10 dropped Jake to +4 (T50) after 12 holes.

The top 5 teams are currently Pepperdine, Texas, Arkansas, TCU & Clemson.

The top individuals not on those teams are USC's Sam Kim (-2/6th place/Finished) and Justin Suh (-1/T7/17 holes) and Iowa's Gonzalo Leal & Benton Weinberg and San Jose State's Kevin Velo & Sean Yu, who are all at -1 after 14-16 holes.

He finished +5 and will have to shoot much better scores the next two days to be in the mix for the NCAA's. Pepperdine and Texas are tied for the team lead at -6, followed by TCU (-4), Arkansas (-2) and Clemson (Even).

Benson is tied for 46th. The top individuals not members of the lowest five teams (Pepperdine & Texas/-6; TCU/-4; Arkansas/-2, & Clemson/E) are Benton Weinberg (Iowa) and Sam Kim (USC) at -2/T6. Only one individual golfer will advance out of each regional into the national tournament field.

Jake double-bogeyed the first hole today and parred his next 4. He's currently tied for 50th place with his +7 score.

He's pretty much out of contention, unfortunately.

He shot +4 today to finish the day +4 (+9 overall)... He’s tied for 43rd so middle of the pack.

It’s pretty crazy though because he’s played pretty good golf outside of three double bogeys that have set him back significantly.

Tough to win a tournament when you only birdie one hole.

Jake had only 2 more bogeys today ... but, unfortunately, no birdies. His +4 round moved him up two spots on the leaderboard, however, to T43 (+9).

The leading individual not on the Top 5 teams is still Sam Kim (USC). One stroke behind are Iowa's Benton Weinberg and the leading individual (competitor who is not on any team in the field): Blake Elliott (McNeese State).

I think Elliott was the guy who beat out Meissner last year for the NCAA spot (speculating this on memory only)?

Benson is just a sophomore and has improved a lot this year. More improvement over the next two years and he can be better than Carmona or Meissner.

Elliott beat Meissner by 3 strokes last year, but Braden Thornberry (Ole Miss), who was another stroke lower, was the qualifying individual, as his team finished in 6th place. (Thornberry did not make the cut after the 3-round stroke play portion of the 2018 NCAA D1 final.)
