Top SEC and ACC programs form 6th Power Conference
Quote:NAPLES, Florida (Reuters) -- American college sports has a new conference

ADs and Presidents from 8 NCAA institutions located in the southeastern portion of the United States have issued a joint statement that they are forming a new athletic conference, citing the growing desire to compete against each other rather than against conference-mates as far away as Texas, Missouri, New York, and Massachusetts.

The "Southeast 8" have not formally named their breakaway conference and have not confirmed that further schools will not be invited to join. They did share that they have television partners lined up and are preparing to request a change in revenue payouts from the College Football Playoff.

These institutions' former conferences (the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference) hold their television Grant of Rights until the mid 2030s, and so it is unclear how this issue will be resolved. Parties emerging from the meetings, however, seemed confident and spoke of "fair apportionment" and owning their own Conference Championship Game and NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament revenue.

The SEC and ACC have not yet issued a response and it is unclear whether, if the Southeast 8 have truly broken away, they will replace their rosters with other institutions.

The 8 schools leaving are Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee.
I'm guessing the only reason they picked Miami is because they need a private to do all their secret wheeling and dealing. I'd have gone with LSU or South Carolina or heck even Virginia Tech. Or maybe Kentucky or UNC+Duke; basketball is not dead (financially speaking). Maybe they'll go to 12 with some of those schools??? whoever wants to take a chance on this; not sure where the money will come from, except for maybe the tournament. Will wait for more details.

Bet they revive the “Metro” moniker and pick up Georgia Tech in a movement for geographic continuity that starts a domino effect across CFB resulting in an 8-league power structure.

ACC (9) - UMd, UVa, VT, WF, DU, UNC, NCSU, ECU, USC
BE (10) - BC, UConn, SU, RU, TU, Army, Navy, PSU, Pitt, WVU, +C5
B8 (8) - CU, NU, ISU, MU, KU, KSU, OU, OSU
B1G (12) - Cincy, OSU, Mich, MSU, ND, NU, PU, IU, Ill, Iowa, Minn, UW
METRO (9) - UT, CU, UGA, GT, UF, FSU, Miami, Auburn, Alabama
PAC (12) - UW, WSU, UO, OSU, SU, UC, UCLA, USC, UA, ASU, UU, BYU
SEC (10) - UL, UK, VU, Memphis, Ole Miss, MSU, LSU, Tulane, UCF, USF
SWC (9) - Arkansas, Texas, A&M, TT, TCU, SMU, BU, UH, Rice

8-team CFP Quarterfinals on NYD:
ORANGE - METRO vs ACC
SUGAR - SEC vs BE
COTTON - BIG EIGHT vs SWC
ROSE - B1G vs PAC

With the C5 in the Big East, Great Midwest forms a 9th power conference for basketball:
Xavier, Dayton, Butler, Saint Louis, DePaul, Marquette, Creighton, Wichita, Tulsa

Nobody is leaving the ACC and no one is definitly leaving the SEC. Someone has an active imagination. I googled this article and the only reference to it is right here on this board in this very thread. And its not on Reuters anywhere that I could find either.

CORAL GABLES, FL - News broke this evening that after being unable to win more than two conference games in a season in a decade, the Hurricanes have decided to end their football program. Sources familiar with the conversation say similar talks are ongoing at Georgia and Auburn.

Rumor has it that Georgia Tech was invited to be part of this new conference but declined. Key boosters saw this as their chance to be competitive at last in the ACC, and they couldn't pass that up. Helping to cinch that decision was the prospect of getting a bigger share of all the NCAAT loot earned by the Tobacco Road schools going forward.

I've always said it's so much easier when you only have to get up for one or two big games a year. I've enjoyed the decade long win streak, smashing Bobby Dodd's record, in Clean Old Fashioned Hate. I just wish the NCAAT units paid out more than a third tier bowl game like it does these days.
