UND/NDSU/USD/SDSU/UM/MSU/UI Presidents Met at Denver Airport
Looks like someone had a randevu and got caught. Oh boy! From McMurphy’s Facebook:

Quote:DENVER, Colorado — They met in secret.

If word got out before they were ready to strike, it could spell disaster.

Well, here we are.

Presidents of seven universities in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Idaho convened last month at Denver International Airport, not in the underground tunnels that intrigue conspiracy theorists across the world, but in a small, secluded meeting room.

At the meeting, UND President Mark Kennedy, NDSU President Dean Bresciani, USD President Sheila Gestring, SDSU President Barry Dunn, UM President Seth Bodnar, MSU President Waded Cruzado and Idaho President Chuck Staben conspired to break away from the Big Sky Conference and Summit League and form a revived FBS Western Athletic Conference alongside New Mexico State University.

Athletic directors and faculty athletic representatives from each of the eight institutions have started meeting monthly in Las Vegas to iron out the details. They’re in negotiations with Larry Scott, commissioner of the Pacific Athletic Conference, to jump ship and help them negotiate television and bowl game contracts and ensure the WAC champions in men’s and women’s basketball would receive the same automatic berths to the NCAA tournaments that were given to the champions of the other 32 Division I conferences.

There is no talk of CFP distributions to the WAC, which would start FBS play in 2021. However, there are rumblings the NCAA in conjunction with CBS are drawing up plans to expand the NCAA Tournament to 72 and take up the ACC’s proposal of another First Four site in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The WAC already has an auto bid to the NCAA so this should not impact anything.

Guess the Vandals found the Big Sky too tough for them.

If the Summit League could fins find homes for Ft Wayne, Western Illinois, and Oral Roberts getting Montana, Montana St, and Idaho on board would create a nice state school league, plus Denver, regardless if it was FCS or FBS

That was my initial thought was well.

It is amazing how many supposedly secret meetings take place in airport conference rooms. Videoconferencing and using fax machines perhaps are not theatrical enough for this kind of story.

If they ever happen to go down this road, Eastern Washington would be a good program to bring with them.

No it wouldn't--the whole point is (would be) to separate themselves from the Directional States in the rest of the Big Sky. If I'm commissioner, I'd also look into big-city schools surrounding their area--University of Denver, maybe UN-Omaha, UMKC, maybe look at Portland State, Sacramento State, maybe Seattle University.

Not the point. If the "Great Northern" ever comes to pass, it won't be because the Big Sky (or Summit/MVFC) isn't competitive enough in the FCS playoffs or has a low RPI/NET, it will be to separate the University of Montana's and South Dakota State Universities from the WEstern Illinois' and Eastern Washingtons and Northern Arizonas and Oral Robertses.

If University of Montana is trying to recruit tuition paying students from northern California, they're selling the idea that they're a big-boy State University, so go freeze in Montana instead of going to Cal STate Fremont. Being associated with Southern Utah University doesn't help that.

The high academic research schools in the Big Sky schools are:

Idaho
Idaho State
Montana
Montana State
Northern Colorado
Northern Arizona
Portland State
and affiliate UC-Davis.

With the 4 Dakota schools makes 12 football. I could see Seattle, Cal. Baptist, Utah Valley, and Grand Canyon to the Big West. UTRGV and Tarleton State to Southland. UMKC, Chicago State to Summit. Dixie State, Central Washington, Azusa Pacific, Colorado Mesa and Simon Fraser to the Big Sky. Lamar and Sam Houston State could go football only and their other sports go to Summit. Non-football could be Grand Canyon, Denver and Omaha to offset the 3 football affiliates.

While I think that would be a great conference. Spanning 3 time zones is a big problem.

RE: UND/NDSU/USD/SDSU/UM/MSU/UI Presidents Met at Denver Airport
Is this meant to be a joke? I don't see anything from Brett McMurphy on the topic. It's also a tad ironic that the deal was ironed out at the very same place the MWC talks occurred (if this is legit that airport needs a sign that reads birthplace of NCAA conferences). I know Larry Scott is an utter joke and terribly mismanaging the PAC 12--they can't seriously want him.

If this is true I'd like some clarity as to if this is a brand new conference or are they planning to use the WAC umbrella. If they are indeed going to be the WAC then they don't need to worry about mbb tournament access.

Where I see the fall out going:

Summit--loses 4, adds UMKC, Chi St, Augustana, and Bellarmine in the rebuild
MVFC--can still operate with 7 schools
Big Sky--reduced to 8 full plus 2 fb affiliates. Stable but could consider adding UVU and Dixie St and solidifying Utah as its footprint core (4 Utah schools + 3 in neighboring states)
New WAC--they have their 8 fb schools but for Olympic sports they could be as big as 14 which is less than ideal. GCU and Seattle might not be bad to keep around but I don't know that there's long term value in Cal Bapt and UTRGV
